The 2018 Mac Park Easter Cup and Round 2 of the South Australian championships couldn’t have gone much better. This was my first race on the 600 at Mac Park and only my third ever race on the 600. The weather could not have been any better with sunshine all weekend.
It all started with Friday practise. It took me a while to get down to the times I wanted to. I felt really comfortable all day and dropped over a second every session. In the end I ended up being the fastest 600 on Friday practise with a time of 1min 13.5.
First up on Saturday was two ten minute qualifying sessions. In the first session I treated it as a warm up for the first half of the session and then I was able to do the same time I did on the Friday practise with a 1min.13.5. In the second qualifying session I pushed a little harder as this time would also give me a grid position for the Easter Cup 12 lap feature race. I was able to do consistent 1min 12 lap times and ended with a best time of 1m.12.4 and a new PB.
Due to some unfortunate crashes there was a hold up and the schedule got held up a little bit. I only got one race Saturday in the Supersport 600 class and one Easter Cup race both being 6 laps long. In the first Supersport race I was able to get a really good start and get the holeshot. I held my place in first for the whole race and was able to do consistent 1min.13 lap times with a best time of 1min.12.9 and a 5 second lead over the rest of the field.
Next was the first Easter Cup race which was the fastest 18 riders from the weekend and all classes. My qualifying time of 1m.12.4 got me second on the grid for the Easter cup. I didn’t as good as start as the 1000cc Superbikes and fell back to third off the line. Another Superbike passed me down the straight pushing me back to fourth. I made a pass to move up to third and there was a slight gap to the top two. I was able to get that gap back in two laps and the leader had a slight gap. Into turn 1 I went into second position under brakes and pulled a instant gap while catching the leader. I was slowly gaining but couldn’t get close enough to make a pass. I finished second with another new PB of a 1m.12.0 and the fastest lap of the race.
Race one on Sunday was the second race for the Supersport and it went much the same as the race on Saturday. I got the holeshot again and led the whole race pulling over one second a lap. I did the same lap time as race one on Saturday 1min.12.9 but I was able to pull a seven second gap over the rest of the field.
I had two more Supersport races to go and they both went the same as the first two I got the holeshot again but in the third Supersport race and the second one for Sunday I was able to do a 1min.12.5. In the last Superspot race for the weekend my tyres where starting to go off and I didn’t have as much grip. I was still able to win the race but my lap time where a little slower as I had a 12 lap race next with the Superbikes.
The last race for the weekend was the Easter Cup 12 lap feature race. This was my best race for the weekend. I was able to get a really good start and get the holeshot. I pushed hard in the early laps to try and stay ahead of the 1000cc Superbikes. I had was able to stay infront for two laps until I got passed down the straight. In the two laps that I was infront I pulled a gap of five seconds over third. So when the superbike passed me I struggled to keep up because I was 400cc slower. I pushed really hard in the first few laps to try and stay in touch with the leader. I got a good fast lap time of 1min.11.6 only 0.1 off the 600cc Supersport lap record. I finished second overall in the Easter cup race and had a 18 second gap over the next rider.
The 2018 Easter Cup was really successful for us and we are really happy with the lap times I was able to do and are confident that the lap record can be broken.
