ROUNDING OUT 2023 WITH THE NATIONAL KARATE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SOLO CHAMPIONSHIPS

December 20, 2023 Filed Under: News, Speedway

After a weather-induced delay of the original date, Gillman Speedway witnessed an electrifying showdown at the National Karate South Australian Solo Championships. Riders from all corners of Australia converged on Gillman Speedway to see who would close out the year with the SA Championship title next to their name.

In the end, it was Victoria’s Justin Sedgmen who emerged as the star of the night, reclaiming the South Australian Solo Championship with a finals win after a clean sweep of firsts across all his races and leaving him with a perfect 15 points. SA’s Fraser Bowes put on a strong performance throughout the night, taking second place ahead of Jake Turner in third, after securing his final spot with a B final win. Victorias Jack Morrison rounded out the finals in fourth place after a strong performance throughout the night, avoiding B finals and lining straight up on the gate for the main event.

Taking the lead in the sidecar support category, Brian Silvy and Glen Zaworski had a fantastic night with nothing but firsts, despite fierce challenges from Josh Pascoe/Greg Black, Stephen Fowler/Jeremy Sherwood, and Dean Hobbs/Daniel Low. In the end, Team Pascoe/Black would take second place, with Fowler/Sherwood in third and Team Nathan Fleet/Cameron Diwell in fourth overall for the night.

Catch up on a full breakdown of the action from Saturday’s National Karate South Australian Solo Championships and support classes in the Gillman Speedway Press Release – HERE.

2023 DRAWS TO A CLOSE WITH A LEVEL 1 COACHING COURSE!

December 18, 2023 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

With a week to go until the MSA office closes over the Christmas break, the last weekend of 2023 featured a Level 1 Coaches Course, with 6 new coaches taking up the chance to become new coaches for our sport.

Run over 2 days, with day 1 being the theory day at MSA Hall and day 2 the practical day, run at Sidewinders Speedway, with a huge thanks, the newbies were put through 6 modules of theory, a written exam and also having to put together a lesson plan for the following day, with day 1 running from 9.00am until about 2.00pm.

Day 2 saw the crew put their lesson plans into place with 5 Sidewinders Pee Wee ‘stars of the future’ on hand to be coached through each of the plans, and with a lot of the best laid plans, these were modified to suit the group of riders and to get the best out of them.

After getting the kids to do their own scrutineering and then a good 5 minute warm up, some of the activities the riders were put through were:

  • Starts and breaking to a point
  • Figure 8’s – clockwise & anti-clockwise
  • Weaving between cones
  • Braking
  • And the ever popular ‘slow race’ – working on balance and throttle & brake control.

With the weather warming up in the arvo, by 12.30pm, all was done for the day and a de-brief was had in the Sidewinders clubrooms. A huge thanks must go to Sidewinders for opening up their venue for the day and also the young guns who assisted on the day – Toby Monkhouse, Hope and Oliver Coats, Curtis and Lexi Sanders – as well as Adam Possingham for getting out of bed to open the gates after a late night the night before at the SA Solo Championships at Gillman.

So, after the weekend, MSA now has 6 new Level O coaches, who are well on their way to becoming Level 1 Coaches, and they are spread across the state, as well as the different disciplines – so a great cross section of our sport – so look out in 2024 for:

  • Declan Carberry
Road Race & Dirt Track Statewide
  • Callum Dodimead
Motocross / Off Road Predominantly Riverland
  • Ian Kakoschke
Motocross / Off Road Predominantly Clare
  • Stuart Duisberg
Off Road / Trail Riding Statewide
  • Siegah Ward
Motocross
  • Roman Ward
Motocross

Motorcycling SA are now looking to run Level 1 Coaches Courses across 2 dates for REGIONAL AREAS early in 2024, with Keith and Crystal Brook planned for February, and another metro date already pencilled in for September (before Speedway season) – but stay tuned for these dates to be confirmed.

DAVID BASHAM JOINS THE GREATS AS HE IS INDUCTED INTO THE MSA HALL OF FAME!

December 13, 2023 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

Saturday night, December 9th 2023, at the Eagles Function Centre at Woodville South saw Motorcycling SA host their annual ‘Night of Champions’, with a number of highlights during the evening, but none more than David ‘Dave’ Basham becoming the 10th inductee into the Motorcycling SA Hall of Fame in front of the 150 attendees.

MR DAVID PARKER SPEAKING ABOUT THE DESERVING 2023 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE DAVID ‘DAVE’ BASHAM

With the 4 time National Champion and 26 time SA Champion (across 3 disciplines) unable to attend, and then his family denied the invitation at the last moment by COVID-19, it was left up to MSA Board Member, Mr David Parker, to accept the induction on Dave’s behalf, with all in attendance paying great respect to Dave’s career and agreeing that his is a very worthy inductee to Motorcycling SA’s most exclusive ‘club’!

Another highlight was an emotional Ivan Golding accepting the Frank Franklin Trophy for 2023. With ‘The Frank’ only presented to those who have made an outstanding contribution to motorcycle sport in SA over many years, there can be no denying that the 88 year young Ivan has done more than most and fully deserved to have his name added to that honour roll!

THE 2023 FRANK FRANKLIN RECIPIENT IVAN GOLDING
IVAN GOLDING SHARES A TOUCHING SPEECH AS HE RECEIVES ‘THE FRANK’

The MSA Rising Star Award for 2023 was an amazing award to present, because it was felt that the ‘Class of 2023’ is the most highly decorated bunch of future champions that South Australia has ever produced, with 21 total nominees boasting at least a South Australian Championship in their chosen discipline – or higher!

That’s correct – 21 amazing riders, of which 10 also stepped onto an Australian Championship podium, and 4 also travelled overseas and competed in International competitions – something not heard of before for SA juniors!

Huge congratulations to speedway’s Kobi Canning for his overall ‘win’, just pipping fellow finalists, Rikki Henry & Archie Schmidt (road race), Darcey Timmis (dirt track), Lucy Cowan (trial), Tomi Doble (motocross) and Davey Gear (enduro).

Once again MSA paid homage to a number of outstanding volunteers that the sport can’t run without, led by a special award to Kym Bolto for his amazing achievements with the bLU cRU SA Junior Cup over the past 2 years – and Kym himself also threw up a special Regional Volunteer Award to 12 year old Izaak Warren for always being on hand to assist at road race meetings, coaching days and displays.

For a full list on all the Regional Volunteers, scroll down – and a huge thank you to them all for an outstanding job well done!

MSA Club of the Year was ‘fought out’ by the good folk at the Keyneton MCC and Sidewinders U16 Speedway Club, with Keyneton being given the nod and in the process becoming the first Club to win the award 4 times, with this being Sidewinders first trip to the podium since the inaugural year of the award in 2007 – and with a huge 2024 planned for the small junior speedway club – look out in 2024!

Motorcycling SA would like to thank the Eagles Function Centre for hosting the event so well once again and accommodating to our needs, as well as the emcee, Mr Jason O’Halloran, and the official photographer for the night, Rebecca Bowdidge from Pit Lane Studios.

Motorcycling SA would also like to thank the guest speakers who got up on the evening to talk about their journeys, present and into the future, as well as Josh Schiller from the 24 Hour Trial Committee for the 100th Anniversary promo video that played on the evening.

MOTORCYCLING SA HALL OF FAME & LIFE MEMBERSHIP NOMINATIONS

Nominations for consideration for induction into the Motorcycling SA Hall of Fame are open 365 days a year, but for consideration in the current year all nominations MUST be received (at present) by September 31st, so their careers can be collated and sent on to the selection committee and then the MSA Board of Directors.

If they are not received by the end of September, then they will not be discarded, they will be filed for consideration for the following years, which is similar to how the Sport SA Hall of Fame operates.

The current MSA Hall of Fame inductees are:

2014 Jack Young speedway
John Boulger speedway
Murray Williams motocross sidecar
2015 Andy Caldecott rally raid & vintage motocross
2016 Jeremy Burgess road race
2017 Kenny Blake road race
2018 Bill Horsman   road race
2019 Trevor Diener & Philip Holmes trial
2021 Gavin Porteous road race sidecar
2023 David Basham motocross

So, if you believe you have someone who you feel should be considered for induction, then download the forms (link below) and put their career down on paper and email it in to administration@motorcyclingsa.org.au

This is also relevant to Motorcycling SA Life Membership, for a lifetime of work for the sport here in SA – all nominations will need to be lodged at the MSA Office before the end of September each year to be considered for that year.

For the criteria and nomination forms, head to the Motorcycling SA website and hit the link to the ‘History & Honour Board’ page – and – here ‘tis: www.motorcyclingsa.org.au/about-us/history

RESULTS – ASBK ROUND 7 SA LIGHTS UP THE SHELL V-POWER MOTORSPORT PARK

December 8, 2023 Filed Under: News, Road Racing

For the final time in 2023, the Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championships would all be decided at the Shell V-Power Motorsport Park at The Bend. Twenty of SA’s own talented road race crew went up against Australia’s cream of the crop, resulting in a fantastic conclusion to the huge 2023 Championship. With a staggering 26 top-10 race finishes, countless podiums, and top series overall results, it’s safe to say that SA is producing an exceptionally high level of talent on the tarmac.

Championship positions came down to the barest of margins, and many historic on-track battles went down to the wire throughout the weekend, making it one for the ages. Before delving into the results and 2023 Championship overalls, let’s take a look at just some of the memorable moments from the weekend.

Dominance in the 2023 Michelin Supersport by SA

South Australia emerged as a dominant force in the 2023 Michelin Supersport class. Olly Simpson, Ty Lynch, and Dallas Skeer secured top positions in the Championship battle. Simpson’s consistent speed, translating from qualifying in the top 3 over both rounds to claiming victories in races 1 and 2, secured a second-place podium finish in the Championship, trailing Cameron Dunker’s lead by a mere 9 points. Lynch, despite an unfortunate crash in race 2, clinched third place in the Michelin Supersport Championship, with Skeer closely following in fourth place, trailing by 43 points.

2023 Oceania Junior Cup Deciders

The pressure was palpable heading into the weekend’s Oceania Junior Cup, with Archie Schmidt leading by just 1 point. Schmidt delivered an impressive performance, engaging in intense battles for first place and ultimately securing a weekend victory trifecta, claiming the overall Oceania Junior Cup for 2023. What an incredible achievement, especially considering this year marked his debut appearance in the series!

Rikki Henry was a consistent contender in the weekend’s OJC leading pack battles, displaying fantastic riding skills. He was able to walk away with podium results across all races, securing a third place in race 1 and achieving two second-place finishes in races 2 and 3. A great finish for the year!

We can’t overlook the journey both Rikki and Archie have undertaken to get to where they are now. Transitioning through and winning the bLU cRU SA Junior Cup, they are now excelling in the Oceania Junior Cup and internationally. Their achievements are a nod the immense development opportunities and benefits SA riders receive through the SA Junior Cup Program.

Double Supersport 300 and Yamaha Finance R3 Cup ASBK Maiden Podiums

There aren’t many better ways to overshadow the highlight of a first ASBK podium, but Jordy Simpson certainly found one. He not only secured his first podium with a third-place finish in Race 2 of the Yamaha Finance R3 Cup but also continued the charge, clinching third place again in the Supersport 300 race 2. It’s great to see and definitely not the first time we’re going to see Jordy on the front row.

Davo’s Triumph in the 2023 Superbike Masters

Davo Johnson solidified his place in history at the 2023 Superbike Masters! Amidst a field of world-class talents including Gary McCoy and Troy Corser, he showcased his renowned riding skills, securing two first-place finishes in races 1 and 4 aboard his Suzuki GSXR. Despite facing challenges, such as a bike stall in race 2 that forced him to start from the last position, he impressively fought back to a fifth-place finish. At the wrap-up of the 2023 Superbike Masters Championship, Davo has now taken 5th overall, despite only racing 2 out of the 3 rounds.

Celebrating SA’s Round 7 Top 10 Achievements

On top of the podium results, SA celebrated countless top 10 overall results across the board! Before delving into the results, let’s take a quick look at the fantastic talents who achieved top 10 overall results for the final round: Arthur Sissis clinched 10th in the Alpine Stars Superbikes, while Declan Carberry secured 8th, and Mitch Simpson grabbed 10th in the Michelin Supersport. Additionally, Sam Pezzetta claimed 6th and 7th respectively in the Supersport 300 and Yamaha R3 Cup classes.
