Coaching Permits – Important Information
Coaching Permits – Important Information
Motorcycling South Australia have been receiving a number of queries surrounding the process required for running coaching sessions. Additionally, we will be implementing some clear timelines surrounding the requesting of permits, and the processing of endorsements to help us streamline the process and to allow us sufficient time for administration.
Please review all information carefully so that you are fully aware of a coach’s obligations.
PERMITS
Private or Commercial Coaches: All coaching activities must be conducted under a Coaching Permit. It is the coaches’ responsibility to apply for the permit and submit all required paperwork to MSA in the stipulated timeframes. From 15 July 2025, commercial coaches will need to pay for coaching permits upfront.
Club Coaches: Coaching activities through clubs can be conducted under a Coaching Permit, but can also be run under Club Training Days, Recreational Activity or RPA days. Clubs are responsible to apply for the permits and submit all required paperwork to MSA in the stipulated timeframes. Where any coaching activity is not run under a dedicated coaching permit (eg RPA), sessions must be run separately, away from any other activity. PLEASE NOTE: The ability to run coaching sessions at recreational rides is currently under review and may change in the near future.
TIME FRAMES
Permits: An application for a coaching permit MUST be submitted at least 7 days prior to the event. Any applications submitted within 7 days will incur an urgency fee of $55. Any applications submitted within 48 hours of the planned event may not be approved.
Reports: All reports must be submitted electronically to MSA within 5 working days, with the exception of the injury reports which must be submitted within 24 hours after the event (or the next business day). Failure to provide these reports within the required timeframes will incur a late fee of $200. Failure to provide these reports within 30 days will result in the temporary suspension of permits being issued until the required reports have been correctly submitted.
Cancellations: For private or commercial coaches, if you wish to cancel a coaching event, this MUST be communicated to MSA in writing at least 24 hours prior to the event. Any events cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice will still incur a permit fee.
Failure to pay any of the above mentioned fees will result in the suspension of permits being issued.
REPORTS & ENDORSEMENTS
Following the coaching event, sign in sheets and event reports must be submitted to MSA correctly. No endorsement will be approved if the coaches’ paperwork hasn’t been correctly received.
All endorsements MUST be recorded on the appropriate log book. Kick-start books or coaching books must be used for every rider that is seeking and endorsment. The coach must fill out the book(s) correctly so that the riders can upload the relevant pages to their RiderNet profile. Only then will their endorsement be approved. Failure to fill out the details correctly will result in the endorsement being denied.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
All Coaches must:
- hold a current MA licence with the appropriate coaching accreditation;
- hold a valid Working with Children Check for South Australia;
- hold a valid first aid certificate (in the case where the Coach will be riding, a second first aider that is not riding must be present).
Any club or coach found to be hosting events without a permit or using an incorrect permit will be charged a fee of $1,000. In addition, any club or coach found to be in breach of any rules after investigation will be charged a fee of $500.
For a full list of requirements please read the MA National Coaching Guidelines. Please ensure you are familiar with these guidelines to ensure all processes are being followed correctly. More resources can be found here.
Please feel free to contact MSA for more information.
South Aussies Turn Up The Heat At Hattah For 2024
Arguably one of the most challenging motorcycling desert races in the country, the Hattah Desert Race attracts competitors from across Australia, all hoping to conquer the challenge and stand on those coveted podium steps. Every year, a strong contingent of South Australian talents makes the trip for the challenge, and 2024 was no exception, with over 108 riders stepping up to take it on. With a list of results ranging from outright victories and class wins to plenty of top-10 finishes, you could say SA well and truly brought the heat. With plenty of stories to go around from the 2024 Hattah journey, let’s take a look at just some of the moments from a packed weekend of action.
From the prologue, Emma Haylock had a strong start, taking the fastest time with a 1:14.452, ahead of Audrey Moller. But as anyone who has witnessed the spectacle of the Hattah knows, anything can happen in this marathon challenge. Fellow South Aussies Aimee Butler and Chloe Barton rounded out their prologue with 6th and 7th place finishes in the strong field of Australia’s fastest ladies.
From the get-go, Aimee Butler worked her way through the pack to take the lead over Emma Haylock. Demonstrating her prowess, Aimee put on a show at the front, holding off challenges from Haylock and a hard-charging field to finish with a total time of 2:42:16.839 and take the victory for the Tenacious Women of Hattah (4 laps), with Emma Haylock finishing just under 1 minute and 40 seconds behind, with a time of 2:43:19.337.

Daniel Allen proved that age is just a number, kicking off his Hattah journey with a second in his prologue, to then backing it up with a fantastic second place in the Veterans 35 to 44 years class with a time of 4:16:42.889, ahead of Victoria’s Damien Pendlebury.

Stepping up from last year’s podium in the 85CC 2-stroke and 150CC 4-stroke Small and Big Wheel 12 to Under 16 class, Harry Gilbertson came out the gate firing with a third-place finish in the Big Wheel class prologue to start his 2024 Hattah. Going from strength to strength, Gilbertson made his way through the top-end field competitions until finally overtaking the lead on the second-to-last lap. Putting down a cracking time of 1:36:08.876, he secured the Big Wheel outright victory and class win with a 15.525-second lead over Victoria’s Bjorn Cardenas.

Levi Rossi had an exceptional weekend, taking the win in the huge 85CC 2-stroke and 150CC 4-stroke, Small & Big Wheel – 12 to Under 16 class. Declan Smart narrowly missed landing on the third step of the podium by just 15 seconds.

Speaking of combined outright and class winners, Riley Mullen achieved his first outright and class win with an outstanding performance in the Small Wheel 85CC 2 Stroke and 150CC 4 Stroke 9 to Under 12 category, securing a lead of over 26 seconds.

Bodhi Austin had a commendable first outing at Hattah, narrowly finishing 4th in the 65CC – 9 to Under 13 prologue behind NSW’s Archie Black. However, he managed to push hard during the main event, gaining an edge over Black to secure the class bronze for 2024 with a total time of 1:12:41.181.

Joining Bodhi on the list of outstanding first-time achievers at Hattah, Asha Wilson held her own in the Girls Small Wheel 7 to Under 12 category, securing a well-earned third place. Already riding at such a high level, Asha is sure to be a driving force in our future Tenacious Women of Hattah South Australian stars.

Additional shoutout and well done to our top-10 class finishers: Max Midwinter achieved 6th place in the Under 19 category; Jayden Pilgrim secured 9th in the 251 – 450 4 Stroke class; Jordan Starick came in 4th and Hayden Cook 9th in the Up to 250 2-Stroke class; Chloe Barton earned 5th and Leticia Foster 9th in the Tenacious Women of Hattah – 4 Laps; Ollie Gear placed 6th and Jackson Rossi 8th in the 200CC – 250CC 4 Stroke, 13 to Under 16 category; Ollie Paech finished 8th in the 85CC 2 Stroke and 150CC 4 Stroke Small Wheel Only, 9 to Under 12 category; and Charlize Waldhuter achieved 7th in the Girls 12 to Under 16 category.
As the dust settles on the massive 2024 Penrite Hattah Desert Race, we want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the South Australians who participated in this year’s challenge. Regardless of the outcome, you should all be proud of your efforts.

PRESS RELEASE: SAORC – LOOKING FORWARD TO 2024, AND BEYOND!
After a tough couple of years where the SA Off Road Championship (SAORC) has struggled to keep pace with the rest of the sport of motorcycling here in South Australia, with host clubs struggling to find venues big enough to suitably host the growth of the sport, 2024 is seeing a much-needed resurgence, with an injection of new faces stepping up to ensure the discipline of Enduro doesn’t get left behind.
In conjunction with the MSA Office, the charge for SAORC is now being led by the Throup brothers, Sean and Tristan, and they have landed very much on the front foot and are already breaking through barriers to ensure the Championship not only survives but starts to grow and get better and more viable as each season goes by.
So far they have been talking to a number of Clubs and land owners, both old and new, about a return to the proven SAORC formula, used for so many years of a rotating Championship, so Clubs aren’t expected to run rounds each year, so their members don’t burn out, and also to give their land owners and their properties time to recover after their use, which would ensure their use for many years to come.
The brothers have also been talking to potential sponsors, again, both old and new, to, not only support the Championship, but also the organising clubs to assist with the costs associated with running these events. Top this, they have a fantastic sponsorship package, that can be made available for any potential sponsors who may be keen to come onboard.
Of course, they can’t get it all done by themselves, so if you are keen to jump on the ‘Throup Train’, hit the lads up by email and let them know what you can offer!
SO – to 2024! 2024 sees the 2024 Championship jump from four (4) rounds in 2023, to a confirmed six (6) rounds in 2024, with the possibility of an extra two (2) rounds still to be confirmed, with 2 rounds also hosting rounds of the 2024 Australian Off Road Championship (AORC).
At present the 2024 SAORC calendar has shaped up like this:
Round 1 | Saturday May 11 | Black Hill | Velocette MCC | Sprint
Round 2 | Sunday May 12 | Black Hill | Velocette MCC | Sprint
Round 3 | Saturday August 24 | Kingston SE | Green Triangle | TBC | *AORC |
Round 4 | Sunday August 25 | Kingston SE | Green Triangle | TBC | *AORC |
Round 5 | Saturday September 21 | ACUSA Park | Velocette MCC | Sprint
Round 6 | Sunday September 22 | ACUSA Park | Velocette MCC | Sprint |
There is also the possibility of an extra 2 rounds being added – with the weekend of June 22 & 23 slated as the preferred date – so 2 weeks after Finke and 2 weeks before Hattah – and note the change of this date from the original date released last December, which was in July.
SAORC is, at present, the second largest Championship series on the Motorcycling SA calendar, so the need for a united crew putting together an exciting Championship for all who enter is an absolute must.

The weekend’s excitement is further heightened by the inclusion of the Northern Territory pair, James Heenan and Luke Hayes, who are likely to have plenty of desert racing experience under their belts. Additionally, local talents like John Harkness (who secured 3rd place outright in 2023) and Clint Letton (a nearby resident) are expected to make their mark in both the class and overall results.
Added into this will be the quest to see who claims the Open Women’s crown, with Finke Desert Race finishers from 2023, Port Augusta’s Aimee Butler and Chloe Barton from Nuriootpa likely to lead the field, in yet another great stoush between these 2 close friends!
This year will also feature junior riders for the first time, aged 13-U16 years, who will kick-start a head-to-head race, with male and female riders competing in two 20-kilometre races over the weekend.

Results – SA OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUNDS 1 & 2 RUN AND WON AT CULBURRA
Over the weekend of the 15th and 16th of July, the SA Off Road Championships made a long-awaited return for a new 2023 Championship season. A treat for riders and spectators the Keith and District Motorcycle Club put in exceptional behind-the-scenes work to bring a brand new course and venue in Culburra for Rounds 1 and 2. With the new additions, there are still iconic fan favourites making the return for 2023, we are very fortunate to have both WSB Distributors and Painttech continue their support of the SA Off Road Championships.
With the weather finally changing from the wet muddy conditions and turning it on for the weekend, over 170 riders converged to the course ready for everything that was going to be thrown at them over the 2 days.
A Saturday cross-country format course met riders eager to get those early Championship points. Most riders and their support crew opted to camp at the track the Saturday night whilst many surrounding towns generously rolled out the welcome mat to scores of Off-Road racing spectators, looking for a full weekend getaway experience. Rounding out the weekend with a well earned challenge, a fast-paced sprint format race greeted riders and spectators on Sunday with juniors powering through a 5km course and seniors tested on an 8km course. Of course, in between races, there were plenty of rider catch-ups and course chats throughout the pits.
Appreciation shout-outs must go to the Johnson Family of Tintinara who have been extremely supportive, giving up land to host an inaugural venue for this year’s round 1 & 2 events. Their allowance for the Keith and District MCC and volunteers to enter and carryout anything required to building a new track is much appreciated. A big thank you to, Andrew and Sally, Eddie & Will.
We want to send a special thank you to the Frank Fatchen Cartage, Contract & Earthmoving! Leigh, Lisa and their kids have put in countless hours to make the 2023 SAORC rounds 1 & 2 such a success through the donation of machinery, fuel and time.
The 2023 SA Off road Championships continue onto Keyneton over the 26th and 27th of August for rounds 3 and 4 with riders already gearing up for some pretty tight down to the line racing.
