Results – Port Pirie Motorcycle Club King of the Gulf Easter Motocross Spectacular & Centenial Celebrations

April 4, 2024 Filed Under: Motocross, News

Last weekend, the Port Pirie Motorcycle Club (MCC) illuminated their birthday candles in grand style, commemorating a century of motocross legacy with an unforgettable series of events. Amidst the classic Easter festivities, the 2024 Boats and Bikes King of the Gulf, 2024 AB Chem South Australian Women’s Cup, and the 2024 Smart Refrigeration Classic King of the Gulf kicked off, heralding a monumental weekend filled with breathtaking motocross action and remarkable storybook endings.

In a remarkable nod to the club’s centenary, record-breaking entries flooded in, painting the event with unparalleled excitement. A staggering convoy of 300 bikes revved up to conquer the tracks, while over 200 riders embarked on a journey to partake in what was aptly dubbed a once-in-a-lifetime centennial celebration.

Tensions reached a fever pitch as 22 fiercely competitive riders descended upon the track for the highly anticipated 2024 Boats N Bikes King of The Gulf event. With a lucrative $3,000 prize awaiting the ultimate victor and the tantalizing possibility of an additional $1,000 bonus for conquering all four legs, the stage was set for a memorable showdown. Reigning champion Siegah Ward wasted no time asserting his dominance, clinching a commanding victory in the first race and setting his sights on the coveted bonus. However, challengers Mitch Norris and Levi McManus were determined to make their mark, showcasing their formidable skills and determination. Norris, in particular, proved to be a formidable adversary, claiming victories in races 2 and 3. Yet, Ward had the final say, triumphing in a thrilling finale and clinching the coveted 2024 Boats N Bikes King of The Gulf title along with the accompanying prize money. Norris and McManus secured their places on the podium, claiming second and third positions, respectively, in a display of remarkable sportsmanship and talent.

Returning as the 2023 SA Women’s Cup victor, Amy Bartsh entered the weekend with a fierce determination to uphold her title in 2024. Right from the start, she dominated the preview races, setting an unparalleled standard and securing a clean sweep of victories, putting her in a great position to then continue the momentum and take the feature race. This achievement solidified her position as the reigning AB Chem SA Women’s Cup Winner for 2024, surpassing the competition thrown her way from a stacked field of SA’s fastest women. Emma Haylock claimed second place, while Steph Cutler and Jessica Bennett battled for third. With plenty of position jousting, Steph found the upper hand to take that final podium step by 4 points and a final race gap of under 2 seconds.

Entering the weekend, a formidable lineup of contenders gathered for the highly anticipated 2024 NYRSTAR Prince of the Gulf event, headlined by Pro MX 3 competitors Kye Little and Jayke Hansen. Demonstrating his dominance from the outset, Jayke swiftly asserted himself in each race, skillfully maintaining his lead despite relentless challenges from the lead pack. With a flawless performance, Jayke secured a clean sweep of first-place finishes, clinching the coveted title of the 2024 Prince of the Gulf for the first time.

The battle for the remaining podium positions intensified, as Noah Rochow narrowly edged out Ashton Hansen and fellow Pro MX 3 contender Kye Little to claim second place by a mere 2 points, while Ashton secured a third-place finish just 4 points behind.

Transporting spectators back to the essence of Motocross and underscoring the enduring allure of older-generation technology, the Smart Refrigeration Classic King of the Gulf provided a nostalgic journey into the sport’s evolution. With anticipation running high, fans eagerly awaited to see who would claim the Classic crown and the prize money for 2024. In the end, it was the remarkable skill and prowess of NT’s Tom Whillas that truly captured the spotlight, as he surged ahead with a commanding lead of over 33 seconds, leaving competitors Kieren Belmarie and Darren Averay trailing behind.

Amidst a weekend filled with premieres, the much-anticipated debut of the Junior 125/250cc Development Cup in 2024 took centre stage on Sunday, providing budding young riders with an opportunity to test their skills on the challenging senior track. As expected, this addition proved immensely popular, drawing a multitude of enthusiastic junior racers eager to shine on the grand stage. Throughout three preliminary races preceding the main event, competitors warmed up, with frontrunners gradually emerging, intensifying anticipation among spectators. Initially, Harry McDonald showed strong promise and seemed poised for victory until Kye Little seized an opportunity on the third lap, surging into the lead and ultimately clinching the win ahead of Noah Rochow and Joshua Whitehorn, who staged an impressive charge from the mid-pack to contend for the top spot.

As the dust settles and Port Pirie prepares for its upcoming club rounds, Motocross in SA is already in full swing, with the imminent State Championship Round 1 at MRA. For those who missed out on making the trip down for Easter, mark your calendars for next year, because if 2024 was any indication, the 2025 Easter King of the Gulf is a must-attend event for Motocross enthusiasts of all ages.

If you’re excited to check out all the action of the weekend, Sab Flutur of “Shine Bright Photography” is consistently uploading photos to the Port Pirie Motorcycle Club Facebook page. Event Preview – Port Pirie MCC Easter Spectacular and Centennial Honours

March 28, 2024 Filed Under: Motocross, News

Final last-minute preparations are currently underway ahead of the gate-dropping on this weekend’s Easter Motocross Spectacular at Port Pirie Motorcycle Club, and boy, is 2024 going to be a year to remember! As 2024 marks the special 100-year birthday celebration and a spectacular prize pool of $18,000 up for grabs across all the classes, you’re going to want to spend your Easter in Pirie.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Easter in Port Pirie without the traditional season starter of the 2024 Boats and Bikes King of the Gulf, 2024 AB Chem South Australian Women’s Cup, and a look back in time with the 2024 Smart Refrigeration Classic King of the Gulf. Nudging 200 riders entered and over 300 bikes set to ride on the weekend, there will be no shortage of volunteers to blow out the candles on the cake.

Returning as the 2023 King of the Gulf reigning Champion, Siegah Ward will be keen to show what he is made of against 23 of SA’s motocross standout talents, including the likes of fellow Pro MX rider Brett Metcalfe and 2023 SAMX Championship runner-up Levi McManus. This year’s King of the Gulf honour comes with more than just acclaim; it comes with a generous $3000 prize to bring home and a potential $1000 opportunity for winning all four legs.

As the curtains prepare to rise on the 2024 NYRSTAR Prince of the Gulf, the competition appears as fierce as ever. Joining the field, Pro MX 3 competitor Kye Little could be a hot favourite for the Prince of the Gulf Crown, but 2024 remains wide open for anyone to seize.

The SA Women’s Cup is set to heat up as we see AB Chem come on board as the naming sponsor for 2024, with the winner receiving $1000 for her weekend’s efforts. The year’s title won’t be an easy task, with returning title holder Amy Bartsch back to defend against the talents of Stephanie Cutler and Emma Haylock – just to name a few.

Joining the party for the first time in 2024, we see the introduction of the Junior 125/250cc Development Cup on Sunday, allowing our next generation junior riders to experience the rough senior track and get a peek under the curtain at the competitors they will be facing in the near future.

It wouldn’t be an Easter spectacular without taking a step back in time to the past era with Smart Refrigeration Classic King of the Gulf returning, as a total of 69 bikes from bygone eras take to the track again across the vintage classes.

Brendan Smart, President of the Port Pirie Motorcycle Club was quoted saying “I am so excited for the huge weekend ahead for the club and couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the special 100th birthday year.  We have been absolutely overwhelmed with the response from the Motocross community. With over 300 entries, this is the first time in a long time that we have had a weekend of packed gates. I want to thank everyone for all the hard work that has been put in ahead of this weekend’s spectacular event and the club couldn’t be more excited”.

As for Easter plans, very few levels up to the bar of what Port Pirie has in store for fans young and old, so do yourself a favour and put the Port Pirie Motorcycle Club Easter Spectacular at the top of your list!

2023 SA MX Championship Round 3 Makes A Return To South Coast MX

August 2, 2023 Filed Under: Motocross, News, SAMX Championship

The 2023 SA Motocross Championship points tables are heating up and the finish line is nearly in site for another year. Round 3 of the 2023 SA MX Championships making a return to South Coast MX Club, this coming 5th and 6th of August. After last holding the Championships back in 2020, the club is gearing up for a fantastic weekend ahead and not one to be missed with 2 full days of racing to entertain the whole family.

A special thanks to our series sponsors, Butler’s Mechanical Service and Great Southern Security who have come on board again for the 2023 SAMX Championship journey.

Entry List:

Returning for Pro MX 1 after a flying round 2 first-place overall, Brett Metcalfe lines up against the strong competition including both Siegah Ward and Levi McManus, who are both looking for any opportunity to get past the big #24.

A field of 10 MX2 riders have locked in their names to take on the South Coast Motocross circuit and as we know in racing, it could be anyone’s weekend. After a challenging start to the season in round 1 and securing a round 2 win in MX2, Mitchell Norris is gearing up to lock away as many Championship points as possible before the season comes down to the line.

With the positive continued growth of Females making their mark in the sport of Motocross in SA, 30 of the states best senior and junior talents will take to the track this weekend. For the Butlers Women all Powers class, if round 2 is anything to go by, round 3’s racing is going to come down to the line. Last time out Amy Bartsch took the overall top sport and is back this weekend with sights set for a back to back win. She of course, can’t relax for a second with a strong field of competition chasing her every move including Emma Haylock and Stephanie Cutler.

After a huge trip up to the NT for the 2023 Australian Motocross Championships, Bodhi Austin is ready to extend his 65cc 2stroke 7-u10yrs championship lead for his SAMX 2023 season, after P1 finishes in both Rounds 1 and 2. With a field of over 20 competitors looking to stop his winning streak, can he make it 3 out of 3 for 2023?

This weekends Junior Motocross field will be the perfect example of the exceptional talent levels coming out of our SA clubs. Over 140 of our fastest youngsters are set to take to the track across the weekends junior classes, not to mention the youngest of our sport, 29 budding 50cc riders will be out throughout the demo and auto classes.

With Championship battles heating up and points leads disappearing, you’re not going to want to miss a second of the action this weekend!!
