2024 MSA NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS TO BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 1ST 2025!

May 20, 2024 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

After much deliberation by the MSA Board of Directors, and in conjunction with the MSA Staff, the 2024 MSA Night of Champions, originally scheduled for Saturday December 7th 2024, has had a date change, and will now be held on Saturday, February 1st, 2025.

It was felt that by moving the event away from the mad rush that is December and the run into Christmas, along with several major events, like ASBK at The Bend now being run later in the year, MSA’s ‘Night of Nights’ would be able to receive the promotion and spotlight that it certainly deserves with a move to early February.

Now, with this move, it has more opened the night up to our local competitors who will be home from overseas for the summer, and the MSA staff are now tasked to put together an extended programme, due, in part, to the amazing results and efforts already being put on show throughout this year by, not only SA’s talented competitors, but also by the hard-working officials, coaches, administrators and volunteers, many of whom will be celebrated on the night in some way.

The MSA Office are now working hard to source a new, or different venue to the past 3 years, are keen to take the event back to a formal dress code, up from the semi-formal code of recent years, with a number of special guests and guest speakers to be invited to the evening, across all disciplines and even from outside the sport.

One thing that is unlikely to change, is that Club’s will be able to book a table of 10, for a 3 course meal for adults and 2 course meal for children, with the venue being sourced able to seat 250+ people.

The highlight of the evening MAY be another induction into the Motorcycling SA Hall of Fame, and quite possibly, the awarding of Life Membership to Motorcycling SA.

The question is though – who would be the person(s) most likely to join the 10 inductees already residing in the MSA Hall of Fame? Who will it be to join Jack Young, John Boulger, Murray Williams, Andy Caldecott, Jeremy Burgess, Kenny Blake, Bill Horsman, Trevor Diener & Philip Holmes, Gavin Porteous and David Basham in our most prestigious Hall?

For all of the details on how to nominate someone you feel is worthy for consideration, follow the link at the end of this press release to the full list of requirements and the process that is followed to induct someone into the MSA Hall of Fame.

Of course, another feature of the night will be the presenting of Motorcycling SA’s prestigious annual awards, and include,

  • The Frank Franklin Trophy, for an outstanding career serving the sport here in SA.
  • The 2024 Regional Volunteer Awards, recognising our most valuable officials, coaches, and volunteers.
  • The 2024 MSA Rising Star Award, for our most outstanding junior talent under 16 years of age!
  • The 2024 MSA Club of the Year Award, celebrating our Clubs and Promotors who make our sport happen!

And also, to be celebrated on the night,

  • Any, and all, Australian Championship recognitions
  • International Competition recognitions, following on from 2023’s record number!

Nominations for all the Awards are now OPEN, with Hall of Fame and Life Membership open 365 days, but to be considered for 2024, nominations for each award must be received by:

HALL OF FAME: 5.00pm Friday, September 20th, 2024.
LIFE MEMBERSHIP: 5.00pm Friday, September 20th, 2024.
FRANK FRANKLIN TROPHY: 5.00pm Friday, November 1st, 2024.
REGIONAL VOLUNTEER AWARDS: 5.00pm Friday, November 1st, 2024.
MSA RISING STAR AWARD: 5.00pm Tuesday, November 19th, 2024.

For the first time, ALL nominations will be able to be done online through a link on the MSA website, www.motorcyclingsa.org.au/about-us/history/ in mid-June, but, if you still feel that the ‘old style’ is better, then nomination forms and criteria can be downloaded, and emailed to events@motorcyclingsa.org.au, or printed off and then sent by post to: Motorcycling SA, 251 The Parade, Beulah Park, SA 5067 – and labled ‘Night of Champions’.

The MSA Board of Directors and the MSA Office staff look forward to seeing you all on the night, but if you have any questions or queries, call the MSA Office on (08) 8332 9000, Monday to Friday.

**The pre-booking of a table (of 10) can be made from July 1st 2024, by emailing events@motorcyclingsa.org.au and supplying a contact person (name, phone number & email) and the name of the Club/Promotor.

Preview – 2024 SAMX Championship Round 2 – Rivalries Set To Light Up At Riverland Junior Motorcycle Club

May 16, 2024 Filed Under: Motocross, News, SAMX Championship, State Championship

After an edge-of-the-seat Championship opener, this weekend sees the SA Motocross Championship heat up with on-track rivalries at Riverland Junior Motorcycle Club for round 2.

As the late entries deadline has just closed and the final countdown for gate drop is well underway, Round 2 promises to be an absolute treat for SA motocross fans. With 215 riders and a huge 260 bikes across the classes at Renmark, we are sure to see some new Championship front-runners.

Shoutout and thanks to our series sponsors, Three 3s Apparel and Merch, and Great Southern Security, as they continue their support of the South Australian Motocross Championship journey.

Entry List:

With the top 3 Championship points leaders in Pro MX1 not lining up this weekend, 2024’s King of the Gulf and current 4th-place holder, Siegah Ward, is looking to make his move and solidify his name as a frontrunner in the Championship. He will, of course, be joined by SAMX regulars Mitch Norris, Levi McManus, and the Carpenter Brothers, Seth and Mitch, all looking to secure those crucial Championship points.

Continuing their round 1 showdown, 2023’s MX Women’s Champion Amy Bartsch is still in the Championship fight, trailing by just 2 points behind current second-place Emma Haylock. The front-runner, Charli, misses this round. Can she close that gap even further, or will we see a new senior women’s champion crowned?

Not to mention a stacked field of Experts and Clubmen featuring the current Expert Championship leader Aaron Van Zetton and Clubman Cody Harrison, both eager to continue their points lead. With over 20 riders in each field, this weekend will keep them on their toes with plenty of challengers emerging.

This weekend is all set to provide a perfect insight into the exceptional level of riding coming from our future stars in the sport, with over 170 junior riders taking to the track, including a stack of riders beginning their journey in the sport in the 50cc Demo (non-competitive) field.

Determined to continue her round 1 streak of successes, Emily Lambert is back this weekend in the Great Southern Security 100cc to 150cc 2-stroke and 200cc to 250cc 4-stroke Girls class, with last year’s Champion Charlize Waldhuter looking for any chance to take over the overall lead.

With SAMX young gun regulars including current leaderboard talents like Jayke Hansen, Dylan Gromball, Lacey Thompson, Mason Ezergailis, Koby Smart, and Oliver Thredgold taking on SA and Australia’s top junior fields, it’s going to be an edge-of-the-seat showdown for points leads.

Where:

Situated just outside the picturesque Riverland region, and adjacent to Renmark, there’s no better excuse to make the trip down for the weekend to experience everything the region has to offer and witness SA’s best motocross talent continue their Championship rivalries.

Plan your trip HERE.

Spectator Information:

No need to worry about packing lunch if you prefer to travel light. With a fully stocked canteen offering hot food and cold drinks throughout the weekend, this event will be a one-stop shop for attendees of all ages to refuel between on-track action. Plus, with full facilities including showers and toilets on site, both fans and riders will be well taken care of throughout the event.

PROVISIONAL RESULTS – 2024 SA RELIABILITY TRIALS CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUND 1 COMES DOWN TO THE LINE AT TARLEE

May 6, 2024 Filed Under: News, Reliability, State Championship

Last Saturday, May 4th, the town of Tarlee came alive with the buzz of reliability trials once again for 2024 as Championship Round 1, The Phillip Haydon Trial, proudly presented by the Gawler MCC, kicked off. Fans settled in for a full day of competition as a great turnout of past and new emerging reliability trial talent took on the dry, dusty conditions of the day and night 6-hour format, with a course fully designed to keep racers on their toes.

Showing they haven’t slowed down in their time away from reliability trials competitions, brothers Nicholas and Tristan Throup took the early lead at the end of lap 1, with Nicholas gaining the slight 81-second edge over the tight competition of Tristan, Samuel Nenasheff, 2023 outright Champion Rowan Pumpa, and runner-up Clinton Voigt. Even with Tristan narrowing down an 11-second gap after lap 2, the hard work had already been done to crown Nicholas as the open solo and outright round 1 Championship winner. Rounding out third place, Samuel Nenasheff held off Rowan Pumpa in 4th by just a gap of 5 seconds.

It was a tough start to the Sidecars Round 1 Championship for defending champions Max Hutchesson & Sam Hutchesson when they blew a head gasket on the opening lap, putting a premature end to their Round 1 endeavours. This left the powerhouse duo of Bradley Hunter/Bradley Manuel to put in the work and get a leg up to take the Sidecar win ahead of Shane Schiller & Steven Doecke. The competition between second and third places would be fierce and come down to the final lap of the day to decide. With a gap of just 26 seconds at the halfway point after lap 1, Shane Schiller & Steven Doecke put in the hard yards to establish a 1:23 buffer between them.

Provisional open solo and sidecar results are below, with details and results by class available on the SART website HERE.

(Note competitors have until midnight on Sunday, May 12th to challenge or query any results).

Round 2 of the SA Reliability Trials Championship comes to the Barossa Valley on the 25th of May as Keyneton MCC proudly presents the Mike Connors Trial. As Championship leaders have made a firm stand, the competition is only going to heat up.

Event Preview – Gawler Motorcycle Centre SA Reliability Trials Championship Dust’s Off The Bikes For Round 1 At Tarlee

May 1, 2024 Filed Under: News, Reliability

This coming Saturday the 4th of May sees the return of favourites merge with new beginnings as Gawler MCC is set to mark the opening round of the Gawler Motorcycle Centre 2024 SA Reliability Trials Championship with the Philip Haydon Trial in Tarlee.

2023 kept fans young and old guessing who could claim the overall Championship and with the lineup now in, 2024 is going to be no different. With over 150 riders lined up for the weekend, including many previous winners, you’re not going to want to be anywhere else. Round 1 will put the riders through their paces with a Day/Night format of 2 laps at approximately 6 hours of run time.

Reliability Trials fans will be kept well-fed and hydrated thanks to the Gawler Apex Club with full catering located at Main Control on Tarlee Oval so make sure you get your fill of hot food and cold drinks. Just some of the goodies on the menu for the weekend will be Egg and Bacon Rolls, Burgers and Steak sandwiches, soft drinks, water, tea and coffee. Finally, for all the adults feeling like a cold beer or wine whilst taking all the round 1 Reliability Trials action, they will be taken good care of with a fully stocked bar available.

Entry List:

Returning for another year sees the reigning Championship talent of Rowan Pumpa lining back up for another year with 2023’s runner-up Clinton Voigt joining with sights set on getting an early leg up on the Champ. With a heated expert field, it could be anyone’s day in the end with the rivals including the returning Throup brothers, Nicholas & Tristan locked in.

Of course, it wouldn’t be reliability trials without a cracking field of sidecars lining up to show off what they have in the tank. Adding their names to the list of 2024 Championship hopefuls see the first class sidecar expertise of Shane ‘Crash’ Schiller  & Steven “Stiff’ Doecke. The dynamic duo will be ones to watch as they get that crucial bike time in before defending their 2023 title at the upcoming HARDI 24 Hour Trial Centenary. Joining the round 1 sidecar antics this weekend will also be the 2023 defending Champions Max Hutchesson  & Sam Hutchesson runner-up Shaun Buckley as he teams up with Samuel Weichert. Of course, just 2 of the girls bringing some great competition to the field, regular returners and 24-hour trial finishers Kristy Schultz & Ayla Plowman have dusted off the sidecar for 2024.

Results – Keyneton MCC Commemorate The 50th Mountain Man Trial Featuring Rockhopping SA 2024 SA Women’s Cup

May 1, 2024 Filed Under: News, Trials

Last Sunday, April 28th, witnessed the commemoration and jubilation of the 50th running of the Mountain Man Trial, organised by Keyneton MCC. The event featured the Rockhopping SA 2024 SA Women’s Cup. This year’s occasion was made even more special as it marked the 16th time Keyneton MCC has hosted the event duo. The picturesque Ahrens Ponderosa at Menglers Hill provided the perfect backdrop, attracting riders not only from South Australia but also from Victoria, drawn by the promise of exceptional weather and challenging terrain.

Riders of all abilities were greeted with a fantastic course meticulously laid out by the Keyneton MCC. The course boasted many fresh obstacles, ensuring the 59-strong field of riders remained engaged and on their toes throughout the event. Adding to the day’s festivities was the presence of former A-Grade competitor and Keyneton MCC life member, Bob Petts. Despite making the journey down from Wallaroo, Bob Petts was enthusiastic about being the special guest on the day. His pivotal role in naming the ‘Mountain Man’ Trial made him a standout figure in the history of South Australian Trials. Competitors and trial fans alike had the unique opportunity to meet and interact with a key player in shaping the legacy of South Australian Trials.

The 50th Mountain Man Trial was not just a celebration of endurance and skill but also a tribute to the rich history and community spirit that defines the sport of Trials in South Australia. As riders tackled the challenging course and spectators cheered them on, the event served as a reminder of the passion and camaraderie that unite all participants of this thrilling sport. Here’s to another 50 years of Mountain Man Trials and the enduring legacy they represent.

South Australian Trials Sports Manager Matthew Petersen said “Having Bob Petts, the man who named the Mountain Man Trial attend in person and speak at riders briefing to celebrate the 50th running of the event was really special.

The event also incorporated the running of the Rockhopping SA 2024 SA Women’s Cup, with 13 ladies battling it out over 60 sections across the day.

With awesome weather, a massive field of competitors including those making the trek from interstate and lots of spectators, this was a first-class event run by the Keyneton MCC team that was thoroughly enjoyed by all”.

Results – SA Takes On The Paperclip For ASBK Championship Round 3

April 29, 2024 Filed Under: ASBK, News

Round 3 of the 2024 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia, saw our SA tarmac knee sliders make the journey up to Queensland Raceway, also known as “The Paperclip”. With the circuit renowned for providing exceptional fast-paced lap times and edge-of-the-seat racing, round 3 looked to be a perfect storm for down-to-the-line victories & overall Championship leaderboard shake-ups. Of course, you better believe SA would be at the centre of it all. Before we dive into the round results and see where our riders are positioned in the Championship after Round 3, let’s quickly review some of the weekend’s highlights.

Alpinestars Australian Superbike –

Unitech Racing’s Arthur Sissis stayed in the thick of the premier class action, improving from a 9th place finish in race 1 to take 5th place in race 2 with a cracking fastest lap time of 1:07.984. This put him in 7th for the weekend and just outside the top 10 overall for 2024, in 12th place.

Michelin Supersport –

Continuing his dominant streak, Olly Simpson sits in the Championship second place overall by just 1 point ahead of Jake Farnsworth and Tom Bramich, both tied on 102 points. This was no easy feat, with heavy competition challenges in race 1 resulting in a 6th-place finish. He then avoided the race 2 red flag carnage of Jack Mahaffy’s crash to claim the 3rd for both race 2 and the weekend overall. With plenty of time left in the 2024 Championship, only time will tell if Olly can close the gap and take the overall lead.

Race and Road Supersport 300 –

From the get-go, Jordy Simpson set a cracking pace, posting the fastest time in free practice 2 and edging out the NSW powerhouse competition of Valentino Knezovic. He then qualified in 6th place, just 0.756 seconds behind the leader. Despite a setback in race 1 due to a late red flag, Jordy joined brother Mitch and the returning Tara Morrison in all the front-pack challenges. As we approach the halfway point, only 5 points separate Jordy and Mitch for Championship 4th and 5th places – there’s still time to break onto the podium for 2024.

Showing she hasn’t lost her touch, ‘Tornado’ Tara Morrison made her championship return after being sidelined due to an injury in Round 1 of the SA Road Race Championship. She demonstrated nothing but consistency, being a part of the front-pack battles and having a solid weekend with a 7th place finish across all the SS300 races, ultimately securing 5th place overall for the weekend and continuing her journey in the 2024 Championship points.

Of course, we couldn’t go past the SS300 race without mentioning Ryder Gilbert joining the grid as a wild card entrant on a Unitech Racing R3 machine. He looked as comfortable as ever with a string of top-10 race finishes, proving he is not to be counted out in the front-pack tussles.

The weekend took a tough turn for Georgia Stephens after a promising start knocking down her practice times; she had a big high side in the final practice session, resulting in a broken collar bone. Hopefully, we will see her back on the grid healthy and recovered soon.
