Event Preview – Gawler Motorcycle Centre SA Reliability Trials Championship Dust’s Off The Bikes For Round 1 At Tarlee

May 1, 2024 Filed Under: News, Reliability

This coming Saturday the 4th of May sees the return of favourites merge with new beginnings as Gawler MCC is set to mark the opening round of the Gawler Motorcycle Centre 2024 SA Reliability Trials Championship with the Philip Haydon Trial in Tarlee.

2023 kept fans young and old guessing who could claim the overall Championship and with the lineup now in, 2024 is going to be no different. With over 150 riders lined up for the weekend, including many previous winners, you’re not going to want to be anywhere else. Round 1 will put the riders through their paces with a Day/Night format of 2 laps at approximately 6 hours of run time.

Reliability Trials fans will be kept well-fed and hydrated thanks to the Gawler Apex Club with full catering located at Main Control on Tarlee Oval so make sure you get your fill of hot food and cold drinks. Just some of the goodies on the menu for the weekend will be Egg and Bacon Rolls, Burgers and Steak sandwiches, soft drinks, water, tea and coffee. Finally, for all the adults feeling like a cold beer or wine whilst taking all the round 1 Reliability Trials action, they will be taken good care of with a fully stocked bar available.

Entry List:

Returning for another year sees the reigning Championship talent of Rowan Pumpa lining back up for another year with 2023’s runner-up Clinton Voigt joining with sights set on getting an early leg up on the Champ. With a heated expert field, it could be anyone’s day in the end with the rivals including the returning Throup brothers, Nicholas & Tristan locked in.

Of course, it wouldn’t be reliability trials without a cracking field of sidecars lining up to show off what they have in the tank. Adding their names to the list of 2024 Championship hopefuls see the first class sidecar expertise of Shane ‘Crash’ Schiller  & Steven “Stiff’ Doecke. The dynamic duo will be ones to watch as they get that crucial bike time in before defending their 2023 title at the upcoming HARDI 24 Hour Trial Centenary. Joining the round 1 sidecar antics this weekend will also be the 2023 defending Champions Max Hutchesson  & Sam Hutchesson runner-up Shaun Buckley as he teams up with Samuel Weichert. Of course, just 2 of the girls bringing some great competition to the field, regular returners and 24-hour trial finishers Kristy Schultz & Ayla Plowman have dusted off the sidecar for 2024.

Results – Keyneton MCC Commemorate The 50th Mountain Man Trial Featuring Rockhopping SA 2024 SA Women’s Cup

May 1, 2024 Filed Under: News, Trials

Last Sunday, April 28th, witnessed the commemoration and jubilation of the 50th running of the Mountain Man Trial, organised by Keyneton MCC. The event featured the Rockhopping SA 2024 SA Women’s Cup. This year’s occasion was made even more special as it marked the 16th time Keyneton MCC has hosted the event duo. The picturesque Ahrens Ponderosa at Menglers Hill provided the perfect backdrop, attracting riders not only from South Australia but also from Victoria, drawn by the promise of exceptional weather and challenging terrain.

Riders of all abilities were greeted with a fantastic course meticulously laid out by the Keyneton MCC. The course boasted many fresh obstacles, ensuring the 59-strong field of riders remained engaged and on their toes throughout the event. Adding to the day’s festivities was the presence of former A-Grade competitor and Keyneton MCC life member, Bob Petts. Despite making the journey down from Wallaroo, Bob Petts was enthusiastic about being the special guest on the day. His pivotal role in naming the ‘Mountain Man’ Trial made him a standout figure in the history of South Australian Trials. Competitors and trial fans alike had the unique opportunity to meet and interact with a key player in shaping the legacy of South Australian Trials.

The 50th Mountain Man Trial was not just a celebration of endurance and skill but also a tribute to the rich history and community spirit that defines the sport of Trials in South Australia. As riders tackled the challenging course and spectators cheered them on, the event served as a reminder of the passion and camaraderie that unite all participants of this thrilling sport. Here’s to another 50 years of Mountain Man Trials and the enduring legacy they represent.

South Australian Trials Sports Manager Matthew Petersen said “Having Bob Petts, the man who named the Mountain Man Trial attend in person and speak at riders briefing to celebrate the 50th running of the event was really special.

The event also incorporated the running of the Rockhopping SA 2024 SA Women’s Cup, with 13 ladies battling it out over 60 sections across the day.

With awesome weather, a massive field of competitors including those making the trek from interstate and lots of spectators, this was a first-class event run by the Keyneton MCC team that was thoroughly enjoyed by all”.

Results – SA Takes On The Paperclip For ASBK Championship Round 3

April 29, 2024 Filed Under: ASBK, News

Round 3 of the 2024 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia, saw our SA tarmac knee sliders make the journey up to Queensland Raceway, also known as “The Paperclip”. With the circuit renowned for providing exceptional fast-paced lap times and edge-of-the-seat racing, round 3 looked to be a perfect storm for down-to-the-line victories & overall Championship leaderboard shake-ups. Of course, you better believe SA would be at the centre of it all. Before we dive into the round results and see where our riders are positioned in the Championship after Round 3, let’s quickly review some of the weekend’s highlights.

Alpinestars Australian Superbike –

Unitech Racing’s Arthur Sissis stayed in the thick of the premier class action, improving from a 9th place finish in race 1 to take 5th place in race 2 with a cracking fastest lap time of 1:07.984. This put him in 7th for the weekend and just outside the top 10 overall for 2024, in 12th place.

Michelin Supersport –

Continuing his dominant streak, Olly Simpson sits in the Championship second place overall by just 1 point ahead of Jake Farnsworth and Tom Bramich, both tied on 102 points. This was no easy feat, with heavy competition challenges in race 1 resulting in a 6th-place finish. He then avoided the race 2 red flag carnage of Jack Mahaffy’s crash to claim the 3rd for both race 2 and the weekend overall. With plenty of time left in the 2024 Championship, only time will tell if Olly can close the gap and take the overall lead.

Race and Road Supersport 300 –

From the get-go, Jordy Simpson set a cracking pace, posting the fastest time in free practice 2 and edging out the NSW powerhouse competition of Valentino Knezovic. He then qualified in 6th place, just 0.756 seconds behind the leader. Despite a setback in race 1 due to a late red flag, Jordy joined brother Mitch and the returning Tara Morrison in all the front-pack challenges. As we approach the halfway point, only 5 points separate Jordy and Mitch for Championship 4th and 5th places – there’s still time to break onto the podium for 2024.

Showing she hasn’t lost her touch, ‘Tornado’ Tara Morrison made her championship return after being sidelined due to an injury in Round 1 of the SA Road Race Championship. She demonstrated nothing but consistency, being a part of the front-pack battles and having a solid weekend with a 7th place finish across all the SS300 races, ultimately securing 5th place overall for the weekend and continuing her journey in the 2024 Championship points.

Of course, we couldn’t go past the SS300 race without mentioning Ryder Gilbert joining the grid as a wild card entrant on a Unitech Racing R3 machine. He looked as comfortable as ever with a string of top-10 race finishes, proving he is not to be counted out in the front-pack tussles.

The weekend took a tough turn for Georgia Stephens after a promising start knocking down her practice times; she had a big high side in the final practice session, resulting in a broken collar bone. Hopefully, we will see her back on the grid healthy and recovered soon.

Preview – Keyneton MCC Celebrates The 50th Mountain Man Trial, including Rockhopping SA 2024 SA Women’s Cup & Diener/Holmes Sidecar Trophy

April 26, 2024 Filed Under: News, Trials

Marking its 50th anniversary the Keyneton MCC will be bringing all the festivities of the 2024 Mountain Man Trial, including Rockhopping SA 2024 SA Women’s Cup & Diener/Holmes Sidecar Trophy this coming weekend. To make the most of the recent lack of rain, all the Trial competitions will be brought to the bottom of Menglers Hill at Ahrens Ponderosa.

Adding to the excitement and competition level, the event will also feature Rockhopping SA 2024 South Australian Women’s Cup and the 2024 Diener/Holmes Sidecar Trophy events (all adding up to the 16th time these standout events have been hosted by Keyneton and with well over half of the events drawing interstate competitor interest, it’s a safe bet 2024 will see interstate talents add their names to the entry list.

As 58 riders are all ready to take on an exceptional course, the 50th year is going to be one to remember. As South Australia dominates the entry list, they will be facing off with some exceptional Victorian riders making the trip over for all the celebrations.

With Keyneton Motorcycle Club gearing up to offer competitors another standout year, a possible 48-section trip spread across 4 laps and encompassing 12 challenging sections, will keep riders of all abilities on their toes. On top of a standout course, the day will see a full lineup of classes for ‘solo ‘blokes’ (see below), plus senior and junior non-competitive classes for those just looking to have a ride!

Adding to the special commemoration of the event will see the return of many key past-generation personalities, riders and special guests, including the man instrumental in naming the ‘Mountain Man’, former A Grade competitor & former Keyneton MCC life member, Bob Petts.

Says Bob when thinking back to 1975, “The naming of the first Mountain Man came from a perception of Richard Rake and myself that a certain gangly, bearded rough diamond of a gentleman named Geoff ‘Wack’ Barratt resembled a ‘Mountain of a Man’. There was a lot of excitement and enthusiasm surrounding this event. We were breaking new ground in a patch of new ground S.S.W. of Camel Rock.…”

Unfortunantly, ‘Wack Barratt has since passed but the club will be inviting family members and long-time friend and passenger, Laurence ‘Willie’ Williams, to attend the event as special guests of the club.

All that’s left to do is make sure you’re trackside to experience all the celebrations of this 50th-anniversary honour and witness trials talents of all ages show what they’ve got.

Results – 2024 Anzac Meeting Drops The Season Curtain On Sidewinders U16 Speedway Club Series

April 24, 2024 Filed Under: News, Speedway

After a full season of racing, the final event of the year at Sidewinders U16 Speedway Club took place last Saturday night for their 2024 Anzac Meeting. Adding to the excitement, the night also featured the rescheduled Presidents Cup, originally planned for the night before. This resulted in the winner of the main feature race taking out the 2024 Anzac Day honours, and the Presidents Cup being presented to a person or rider chosen by the president.

With a great field of riders, including plenty of familiar young talents, junior speedway fans were in for a treat with plenty of returning faces keen to give it one last crack for the season. Adding to the excitement of the competition classes, we saw a great lineup of novice riders, featuring non-competitive classes such as 50cc Auto and the 50cc demo class.

From the get-go, Victoria’s Blake Schlein got off to an early start with sights firmly set on the Anzac meeting honours, however returning regular Ryleigh McGregor would prove to be tough to beat as both took domineering positions across the night heats. With absolute class, Ryleigh McGregor rode an exceptional final to take out the 2024 Anzac Day meeting in front of Riley Stout in second and Hayden Kuchel in third. Unfortunately, it would be a challenging final for Blake Schlein, who received an exclusion for touching the tape.

After an exceptional night of competitive riding and to round out the season, congratulations to Connor Machin for being awarded the Presidents Cup for 2024.

President of the Sidewinders U16 Speedway Club, Adam Possingham said “I would like to send a massive thank you to the amazing volunteers for all their hard work behind the scenes in making this season such a success. This year has continued to be a deeply rewarding experience seeing our junior riders excel both locally and even internationally. I am really excited and looking forward to what’s in store for next season and hope everyone has a great relaxing off-season”.

There’s certainly nothing quite like a night at Sidewinders U16 Speedway Club, and with a well-earned offseason ahead for volunteers to recharge, we’re counting down the days until we see the track light up again with junior speedway talents.
