RUMBLINGS FROM THE GRAVE AT PORT PIRIE, OR RE-BUILDING THE LEGACY OF A BYGONE ERA!

February 28, 2024 Filed Under: News, Speedway

Motorcycling SA just spent the weekend of February 24 & 25 in the mid north of the state, running a level 1 Coaching Course at Crystal Brook, but on the Saturday evening, and with the blessing of Neil Burston, MSA took the chance to have a sneaky look at the works being done to an iconic piece of Motorcycling SA history, the Port Pirie Longtrack!

Entering the property (on foot) and walking past the Go-Kart circuit towards the track still circled by light towers long since having shone bright, relics of meetings past appear out of the saltbush, like the old ticket box, now without a roof, open to the elements and with saltbush growing inside and out, the old toilet block in the same state, as well as random machinery, having gone years untouched and now hard to see!

Getting closer, the track can now be seen, almost, now circled by the new rubber fence that has been mounted on the old posts, but before getting to see the track, you are confronted with the old ‘booth’ (bar) and canteen – and like the ticket box, they are both in a state of disrepair.

But – it’s certainly not hard to see the ghosts from the past, leaning on a fence, enjoying a brew while talking racing, during and at the end of the day, or seeing some excited kids race over to grab a pie with sauce or a snag in bread and then race back to the edge of the track to see the next race and not miss a second of the action.

The walk continued, past the original race control tower, already showing signs of re-birth and ready to oversee the action on the track when it returns, to the old pits, with its rusted fences barely keeping out the many rabbits that now call the place home.

Walking through the pits to the track gate, it’s not hard to hear the engines being warmed up and riders donning helmets for their next race around this iconic track, and when you walk through the gate and onto the track proper, you can see the amount of work that has been done and you can only applaud the drive that Neil and his team of volunteers have shown to revive this once great race track.

New surface and new fence, it makes you just feel the speed and the close racing that this track is going to produce once opened – and it’s only then how much you realise that the sport here in SA has, unknowingly, missed this venue, for nearly 30 odd years – and that once it opens, motorcycle racing fans are going the realise the same!

There is still a lot of work to go – but the pivotable part is now done from the walk around – the track and the safety wall – and it’s now just waiting to be raced on – and the signs are there that the back straight will be a place to watch, with dirt being bought in to raise the spectator areas above the new fence, making for prime viewing, plus, a brand new toilet block is now in the pit area.

So, whether its late in 2024, or perhaps early in 2025, when this icon of motorcycle sport in SA does once again ask for entries, and when the locals head deep into their burrows and the ghosts rise up to once again watch the action while sharing a brew, to use an old quote – “get your backside trackside”, rider, passenger or spectator, the trip to Port Pirie will be more than worth it!

For all of the need to know on how the rebirth of the Port Pirie Longtrack is coming along, head to their Facebook page to keep up to date: https://www.facebook.com/groups/248312968887547

With the new fence still hiding the track, the light towers stand waiting for the restarting of on track action!

The Booth (left) and Canteen, also stand waiting to serve patrons and competitors alike once again.

4 NEW COACHES ON BOARD AFTER LEVEL 1 COURSE AT CRYSTAL BROOK IN FEBRUARY

February 27, 2024 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

Motorcycling SA welcomed 4 new Level 0 Coaches after a course was held at Crystal Brook over the weekend of February 24 & 25, with a huge thanks to the Crystal Brook Motorcycle Club for hosting the event.

The Mid North area now welcomes Duane Woolford and Andrew & Josh Whitehorn, while the South East welcomes Drew Hamilton to their coaching ranks, with all keen to get started and assist at a coaching day to get their practical hours logged so they can upgrade to level 1.

Well, we say 4 new coaches, but for the next 6 odd weeks it’s only 3, as 15 year old Josh Whitehorn still has to wait until he turns 16 to be able to be accredited.

Day 1 of the course consisted of the theory components of the course, finishing with a written exam, and lasted about 6 hours, with day 2 starting off with the ‘probie’ coaches putting together a lesson plan for the day, before getting out on track to put their plans into practise.

With 5 young students, the coaches ran them through a number of drills, starting off by getting them to scrutineer their own bikes and gear (with mum and/or dad helping) before jumping on their bikes where they were put through starts, braking (front and rear), weaving through cones, cornering techniques, riding techniques (sitting and standing), before finishing off with a couple of ‘slow races’, which really made the young riders work on their balance, and clutch and brake control.

After that the kids were put through some ‘warm down’ exercises before all enjoying a zooper dooper (thanks Jen) and some lunch!

Huge thanks to all of the parents who gave up a Sunday so their future champions could be put through their paces, as much as the coaches were – awesome to see some raw talent coming through from this area of SA!

Motorcycling SA is now looking at offering another regional Level 1 Coaches Course, with Keith the possible destination, and will also schedule one on the metro area later in the year to continue to increase the number of coaches available, both in regional and metro areas.

Any queries regarding attending a Level 1 Coaches Course, please call the MSA Office on 8332 9000, Monday to Friday, during business hours.

If you wish to register your interest, you can do so through the coaching page on the MSA website: www.motorcyclingsa.org.au/coaches-and-officials/license/ and MSA will be in touch.

This course is fully supported and recognised by Motorcycling Australia, Sport Aus and the Australian Institute of Sport – and is suitable for ALL disciplines of the sport – ATV (Quads), Dirt Track, Enduro, Motocross, Reliability Trial, Road Race, Speedway and Trial.

REQUIREMENTS TO GET YOUR LEVEL 1 AS THEY STAND AT THE MOMENT:

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age. **If you are 15 years and would like to do the course, this can be done, however, you will only be able to assist until you turn 16 and the creds can then be added to your Ridernet profile.
  • Have at least 2 years practical experience in motorcycle competition as a competitor or official and have sound knowledge of motorcycling riding skills.
  • A working with Children Screening Check is mandatory, which can be initiated by MSA, at no cost to you as you would be a volunteer.
  • Hold a current “Provide First Aid” qualification.
  • Complete the online Sport Australia ‘Community Coaching – Essential Skills Course’ The link to this is on the coaching page of the MSA website.
  • Have completed at least 20 hours of ‘Sports Specific Tasks’, and have logged this with the MSA Office, or on your Ridernet profile.
    • The following are suitable activities:
      • Present or lecture at future courses
      • Attend Training Camps (this one qualifies)
      • Conduct some practical club coaching alongside a current coach.

AND LEVEL 1 COACHES CAN:

  • Can take out their own permits, run coaching days, conduct endorsement coaching and Kick Start Coaching.
  • Can coach a maximum of six people at a time, unless with a Level 2 Coach where they can then coach up to ten people at a time.

PREVIEW – 2024 SAFE FIRE ELECTRICAL SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SIDECAR CHAMPIONSHIP COMES DOWN TO THE LINE AT GILLMAN SPEEDWAY THIS WEEKEND

February 21, 2024 Filed Under: News, Speedway

This coming Saturday, the 24th of February, sees sidecar talent from across Australia coming together at Gillman for the 2024 Safe Fire Electrical South Australian Sidecar Championship, presented by the Speedway Riders Association of SA.

Fans, soaking up the heart-stopping sidecar action, will be guaranteed to get a little extra bang for their buck, with Gillman deciding to add an SA Division 2 Sidecar Championship for the riders who don’t qualify for the Safe Fire Electrical main show.

Adding to the anticipation of the night’s action, the MSA Speedway Sports Manager has notified that the qualifying process of the night will involve 23 teams on the night, who will have two one-lap time trials to qualify for the main event and join the four seeded riders, the top four from last year’s Championships being fully seeded.

As of the 19th of February, last year’s Safe Fire Electrical South Australian Sidecar Championship duo, Mark Plaisted/Ben Pitt, are back fresh from their last successful outing in 2024, having won the Bowes Family Sidecar Cup, put them as a pair to watch. Can they add another SA Speedway Sidecar Championship Title to their impressive trophy shelf? Joining them registered from 2023’s top 4, are third-place finishers Nate Headland/Jaxon Rayner, fourth-place finishers Mark Mitchell/Tony Carter and Mick Headland/Jesse Headland, who will be all geared up for the night.

Adding to the mix of talent on the track, former Australian Sidecar Champion Trent Headland and SA former Championship Winner Dave Bottrell will be joining the fray. You’re not going to want to miss a second of the 2024 SA Sidecar Championship story.

As usual, the SA Sidecar Championship will follow, with 16 riders competing over the 20 heats and a semi-final offering one last chance to enter the Main finals. This will leave 11 riders to battle it out in the Division 2 Championship. Following the same format, riders will compete in a semi-final and final at the end of their heats.

For everyone already planning their day of wrangling kids and packing cars, gates will open at 2 pm, and qualifying will start at 4 pm. The Championships will begin at the regularly programmed time of 7 pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate on the night for Adults – $25, Student/Concession – $20 & Children U16 free. Adding to the savings, parking is free, and if you purchase a $5 program, you will be entered into a draw for 2 chances to win a $50 fuel voucher.

For anyone unable to make it trackside and needing to stay in for the night, all the action will be live-streamed through https://www.spacequakesports.com/ppv for the low cost of $25.

RESULTS – 2024 CLYDE MUNDY MEMORIAL IS DECIDED AT SIDEWINDERS U16 SPEEDWAY CLUB

February 15, 2024 Filed Under: News, Speedway

After a short break, Sidewinders U16 Speedway Club returned to action last Saturday, February 10th, for the 2024 Clyde Mundy Memorial. A competitive field of 7 junior speedway talents took to the track with hopes of claiming the Clyde Mundy Memorial Honors for 2024.

Riders fought it out over 10 heats of intense racing, as junior speedway racing fans made the most of the cooler evening weather. At the end of the heats, the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th highest point scorers came together in the Semi-Finals to determine who would get that last spot in the Main Final.

Unfortunately, Hayden Matthews was unable to start the semi-final, leaving William Nicol, Hayden Kuchel, and Owen Chapman to race it out between them. Hayden Kuchel seized the opportunity and advanced to the final, joining Blake Schlien, Connor Machin, and Riley Stout.

In the end, it was Blake Schlein’s night, as he clinched the A Main Final win, followed by Riley Stout, Connor Machin, and Hayden Kuchel.

Alongside this thrilling action, 14 up-and-coming novice and non-competition riders showcased their talent, providing a glimpse of the South Australian talent pool that will make an entrance into the competition world in the coming years.

Take a visual walk through the night’s action HERE with Judy Mackay capturing all the action.

PRESS RELEASE – CRYSTAL BROOK LEVEL 1 COACHES COURSE POSTPONED DUE TO EXTREME HEAT FORECAST

February 14, 2024 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

POSTPONED DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER FORECAST FOR THIS WEEKEND!

Unfortunately, this weekend’s Level 1 Coaches Course, planned to happen at Crystal Brook, has had to be postponed due to the extreme weather forecast for this weekend.

With 39 degrees forecast for Port Pirie on Sunday, rest assured it would break through the 40-degree barrier on track at Crystal Brook, and it just wouldn’t be fair to anyone to be out in that kind of heat – coaches, junior riders and parents!

SO – the course has now been rescheduled for a week later, February 24 & 25, at the same venue, with the long-range forecast saying it should be ok (fingers crossed). The good thing about this, is if you were keen, but couldn’t make this weekend, but you can make it a week later – get onto the MSA website and register – and do it now!

If you live in Crystal Brook or surrounding regions (Clare, Port Pirie, Kadina, Bundaleer, Port Augusta, Whyalla, etc) and are interested in passing on your knowledge to develop tomorrow’s Champions – there are spaces left!

Register here: https://www.motorcyclingsa.org.au/coaches-and…/license/

Many thanks to the good folk at the Crystal Brook MCC for working with us to be able to reschedule this course!
