Results – 2024 ASBk Round 2 – SA Braves The Sydney Motorsport Park Storm

March 26, 2024 Filed Under: ASBK, News

In the challenging wet conditions last Friday and Saturday, our SA riders put up some great competition against Australia’s road racing finest, all under the lights for round 2 of the 2024 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia at Sydney Motorsport Park. With a stack of top 10 finishes and even a podium, it’s safe to say our team showed outstanding resilience to bring about great results. Below is a breakdown of the weekend’s results; let’s take a quick look at just some of the weekend’s moments from our SA crew that shaped ASBK round 2 –

Making his Alpinestars Superbike Debut for 2024, Ty Lynch got to work getting his head around the new machinery. Starting with race 1 in 17th place, he improved his results further, finishing 15th and 13th in his second and third races, respectively. We’re predicting some top 10 results in the not-too-distant future for him.

Continuing his 2024 Superbike journey, Michael Kemp added his name to the list of unforeseen events during the weekend when, during the sighting lap of race 2, he shot off the track at turn 2 in the dark with no brakes at full speed. With a silver lining to the horrible situation, both he and the bike came out of the incident unscathed. In an unforeseen twist, the race start was red-flagged due to the track conditions and the weather, giving Michael the perfect window to switch bikes and join back in the action on the restart. In the end, he improved from his race 1 19th place finish to take 17th in race 2.

Olly Simpson had a challenging start to his weekend with an unfortunate crash in his opening SS600 race, but showing absolute determination and resilience, he turned that around and came back with a 7th place finish for race 2, maintaining his 4th place Championship spot.

Joining the top 10 contenders to avoid the SS300 class mishaps, Mitch Simpson started with a 5th place finish in race 1, then backed it up by jumping onto the 3rd place step of the podium for race 2, rounding out the weekend with an 8th place finish in race 3 – a pretty solid outing!

Jordy Simpson was well in the middle of the SS300 battles, building on his strong top 10 qualifying times to then add a 9th and 5th across the first 2 races, finally finishing in 4th place for his final race, just missing the podium by 0.019 seconds.

Joining the ASBK SS300 debutantes for 2024, Nicholas Yfantidis kicked off his first race with a 20th place finish but fought through the competition to take 16th place in race 2, then edged even closer to the top 10 with a 13th place finish, just 0.203 seconds behind 12th.

The Track Awaits: Previewing the 2024 Web Plastics SA Road Race Championships Round 1 Opener

March 14, 2024 Filed Under: News, Road Racing

The first chapter of the 2024 Webb Plastics SA Road Racing Championship story is all set to start from the 15th to 17 of March at theShell V Power Motorsport Park. Proudly presented by CAFNIX, this will run right alongside the opening rounds of the Pirelli Motul Victorian Road Racing Championship & the Australian Sidecar Championships – all thanks to the fantastic work of both CAFNIX and Victoria’s Preston MCC.

Practice is set to kick off on Friday, followed by two scorching days of racing, as fans, young and old, converge on South Australia’s premier motorsport venue. If you’re thinking that anything else could rival SA & Vic’s fastest road racers taking to the fan-favourite circuit, along with 20 of the best sidecar competitors in Australia, you would be one hundred per cent wrong.

Entry List

With the return of many familiar faces and several class changes for the new year, the Championship could see numerous new frontrunners emerge, with Round 1 offering an ideal start to their charge. Let’s take a closer look at some of the riders to watch out for…

Returning to the forefront of the SA Superbike Championship class, the reigning 2023 Champion, Michael Kemp, and runner-up, Charles Holding, are gearing up to defend their titles against the incoming challengers of Ty Lynch & Olly Simpson. Making their debut in the premier class for 2024, Lynch & Simpson are poised to leave their mark on the competition standings, adding to an already stacked field of competitors.

Embracing a fresh challenge on a new bike, Samuel Pezzetta has made his debut in the SS600 class for the new year, quickly adapting to the demands of his new environment. However, he faces formidable opponents in the likes of 2023 SS600 Champion Charles Holding and the returning talent Olly Simpson. Their presence ensures that Pezzetta’s journey won’t be an easy one. Adding to the excitement of the fresh faces in the SS600 class, Ryder Gilbert will be taking on double duties this weekend, seizing the opportunity to compete in both the SS600 and SS300 classes.

Still riding high from her first ASBK podium, Tara Morrison, the SS300 runner-up of 2023, returns determined to showcase her skills against a lineup of returning talent, including Ryder Gilbert, Phoenix Agar, and Jordan Simpson. Mixing it with a field of 23 fearless riders, it could be anyone’s SS300 podium dream weekend.

Of course, where would the sport be without the next generation of fearless road racers making their way through the ranks? This weekend will feature both Seth and Ethan Dellow, who secured second and third place respectively in the 2023 Championship, both eager to secure crucial early Championship points. However, they’ll face stiff competition from the talents of Xayvion Amoy, Judd Plaisted, and Ghage Plowman, all ready to throw their hats into the ring.

Adding to the excitement, fans will be treated to world-class sidecar racing with Round 2 of the Australian Sidecar Championships taking place over the two days. In the formidable 19-competitor field,  the 2023 Australian Sidecar Championship team of Jamie Crass & Lee Menzies will be looking at making the moves early on in the competition. However, don’t overlook the homegrown talent and previous Isle of Man racing expertise of Royce Rowe he joins the field with Leonard Rowe, fresh from testing the new bike at Mallala.

Further enriching the packed schedule, spectators can anticipate plenty of bar-to-bar racing as SA/VRRC Limited sport bikes, Naked Bike & Pre-Modern 00/08/13 all take their turn in the spotlight on the track this weekend.

Results & Recap – 2024 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia, Round 1

February 29, 2024 Filed Under: News, Road Racing

Joining in all the excitement of round 1 of the 2024 Superbike World Championships, the 35th-anniversary running of the Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia, made its 2024 debut at Phillip Island over the 23rd to the 25th of February. With plenty of returning faces, some South Aussies stepping up a class, and even an ASBK newcomer, this year’s Championship story is going to be one for the books.

Before delving into the results table and 2024 Championship round points overalls, let’s take a look at the memorable moments from the weekend.

Mi-Bike Insurance Australian Superbike Championship

What a fantastic ASBK premier class first-time outing for rookie and MSA 2018 Rising Star, Declan Carberry! Taking to the track for the first time on his new BMW ride, Declan looked as comfortable as ever, and in no time at all, he was down to business. He secured a hotly contested 15th finish in race 1 before achieving a new personal best in race 2 with a fantastic 13th place. Looking as composed as ever, he carried that momentum into a 16th-place finish in race 3. It was a great first outing, and we are sure to see some big things ahead for the young lad.

From the get-go, returning Superbike regular, Unitech Racing’s Arthur Sissis, was aiming to continue  2023’s charge, with new practice PBs regularly being set and qualifying just outside of the top 10. He was on track to make a statement. Unfortunately, race 1 would be a tough start with a DNF hampering his momentum, but shaking it off like the sportsman he is, we would see him come back to his pre-race form taking an 11th in race 2 by just .163 behind 10th spot and rounding out the weekend with a race 3, 12th-place finish.

After brushing off some challenging free practice sessions, Michael Kemp continued to set new personal bests in the premier class throughout his round 1 campaign. Race 1 would see plenty of back and forth for position between Adam Senior, Ryan Yanko, and Superbike newcomer Declan Carberry. Coming down to the line for a 20th in race 1, he would avoid the carnage of his competitors and go to secure those valuable early Championship points and round out the weekend with a solid 20th and 19th finish in races 2 & 3.

Michelin Supersport 600

After his 2023 SS600 Championship second-place overall finish, Olly Simpson picked up the pace set and returned to where he left off. Starting the weekend on the right foot, he qualified P2 with just a gap of 0.046 seconds between him and the top step, to then go on to take the podium honours with a scorecard of 3rd, 2nd, and 3rd. – An exceptional start for 2024 and hopefully not too far in the future we will see Simpson take the podium top spot.

Another rider to make a class move for 2024 would see Unitech Racing’s Sam Pezzetta join the stacked SS600 field with plenty of on-track battles throughout the weekend with Cooper Rowntree. Cooper picked up the valuable early Championship points with his weekend-best 19th finish for race 2. With only brief introductions to the new bike, Sam pushed hard all weekend and by the end looked to be going from strength to strength, reducing lap times and nearly securing those first Championship points for the season. We can’t wait to see what Sam can do in the races to come.

RACE and ROAD Supersport 300

As far as racing highlights go, none are quite as memorable and special as your first ASBK podium. After putting in the pre-season work, Tara Morrison blew the competition away. From qualifying 2nd to taking the learning curves of the weekend all in her stride, she would go from a race 1, 8th-place finish to a race 2, 5th-place finish, finally ticking off that bucket list goal and standing proud in P2 for her final outing of the weekend. To give a good idea of how tight racing was this weekend, much like most SS300 races, the top 9 riders were separated by just 1.289 seconds, with Tara a mere 0.012 of a second off that dream first ASBK top step.

The Championship round charges would continue for the remaining South Aussie contingent as the Simpson brothers Mitch and Jordy stayed in the top 10 field all weekend with Mitch walking into round 2 in 6th for the Championship from his 7 – 4 – 7 scorecard and Jordy 9th from his 6 – 9 – 9 finished.

Joining the front-pack battles & showing consistency throughout the weekend, Ryder Gilbert was making progress in improving his race 1, 12th place with an 8th in race 2; however, his weekend would finish with an unfortunate race 3 DNF with a crash on turn 10, last lap while vying in the front pack battle. Looking forward to seeing Ryder bounce back under lights in Sydney for round 2.

Rounding out the class and making his ASBK debut, Hudson Air has put himself on the 2024 ASBK SS300 points table. Qualifying just outside of the top 20 behind NSW Alexander Codey by .440 of a second margin, he would go on to hold his own in the fiercely contested racing taking out the 22nd spot in the first 2 races before cracking the top 20 with a race 3, 17th place finish – What a great first outing & we can’t wait to see Hudson returning throughout the season.

Overall, to sum up a huge weekend of accomplishments from Team SA, to say we are excited to see what this year has in store is an understatement!!

RESULTS – ASBK ROUND 7 SA LIGHTS UP THE SHELL V-POWER MOTORSPORT PARK

December 8, 2023 Filed Under: News, Road Racing

For the final time in 2023, the Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championships would all be decided at the Shell V-Power Motorsport Park at The Bend. Twenty of SA’s own talented road race crew went up against Australia’s cream of the crop, resulting in a fantastic conclusion to the huge 2023 Championship. With a staggering 26 top-10 race finishes, countless podiums, and top series overall results, it’s safe to say that SA is producing an exceptionally high level of talent on the tarmac.

Championship positions came down to the barest of margins, and many historic on-track battles went down to the wire throughout the weekend, making it one for the ages. Before delving into the results and 2023 Championship overalls, let’s take a look at just some of the memorable moments from the weekend.

Dominance in the 2023 Michelin Supersport by SA

South Australia emerged as a dominant force in the 2023 Michelin Supersport class. Olly Simpson, Ty Lynch, and Dallas Skeer secured top positions in the Championship battle. Simpson’s consistent speed, translating from qualifying in the top 3 over both rounds to claiming victories in races 1 and 2, secured a second-place podium finish in the Championship, trailing Cameron Dunker’s lead by a mere 9 points. Lynch, despite an unfortunate crash in race 2, clinched third place in the Michelin Supersport Championship, with Skeer closely following in fourth place, trailing by 43 points.

2023 Oceania Junior Cup Deciders

The pressure was palpable heading into the weekend’s Oceania Junior Cup, with Archie Schmidt leading by just 1 point. Schmidt delivered an impressive performance, engaging in intense battles for first place and ultimately securing a weekend victory trifecta, claiming the overall Oceania Junior Cup for 2023. What an incredible achievement, especially considering this year marked his debut appearance in the series!

Rikki Henry was a consistent contender in the weekend’s OJC leading pack battles, displaying fantastic riding skills. He was able to walk away with podium results across all races, securing a third place in race 1 and achieving two second-place finishes in races 2 and 3. A great finish for the year!

We can’t overlook the journey both Rikki and Archie have undertaken to get to where they are now. Transitioning through and winning the bLU cRU SA Junior Cup, they are now excelling in the Oceania Junior Cup and internationally. Their achievements are a nod the immense development opportunities and benefits SA riders receive through the SA Junior Cup Program.

Double Supersport 300 and Yamaha Finance R3 Cup ASBK Maiden Podiums

There aren’t many better ways to overshadow the highlight of a first ASBK podium, but Jordy Simpson certainly found one. He not only secured his first podium with a third-place finish in Race 2 of the Yamaha Finance R3 Cup but also continued the charge, clinching third place again in the Supersport 300 race 2. It’s great to see and definitely not the first time we’re going to see Jordy on the front row.

Davo’s Triumph in the 2023 Superbike Masters

Davo Johnson solidified his place in history at the 2023 Superbike Masters! Amidst a field of world-class talents including Gary McCoy and Troy Corser, he showcased his renowned riding skills, securing two first-place finishes in races 1 and 4 aboard his Suzuki GSXR. Despite facing challenges, such as a bike stall in race 2 that forced him to start from the last position, he impressively fought back to a fifth-place finish. At the wrap-up of the 2023 Superbike Masters Championship, Davo has now taken 5th overall, despite only racing 2 out of the 3 rounds.

Celebrating SA’s Round 7 Top 10 Achievements

On top of the podium results, SA celebrated countless top 10 overall results across the board! Before delving into the results, let’s take a quick look at the fantastic talents who achieved top 10 overall results for the final round: Arthur Sissis clinched 10th in the Alpine Stars Superbikes, while Declan Carberry secured 8th, and Mitch Simpson grabbed 10th in the Michelin Supersport. Additionally, Sam Pezzetta claimed 6th and 7th respectively in the Supersport 300 and Yamaha R3 Cup classes.

From bLU cRU SA Junior Cup to 2024 Asia Talent Cup Selection Success

November 10, 2023 Filed Under: News, Road Racing, SA Junior Cup

Two of our very own bLU cRU SA Junior Cup riders have been selected for the 2024 Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup (IATC). The 2022 bLU cRU SA Junior Cup winner, Rikki Henry, and the current 2023 bLU cRU SA Junior Cup winner (with 1 round to go), Archie Schmidt, both made their way to Malaysia for a chance to secure a spot in the 2024 IATC roster and take on a life-changing opportunity.

Joining a total of 89 riders, including 14 Australians, the pair travelled to the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, to be assessed by experts, including the 2009 250GP world champion Hiroshi Aoyama, all under the leadership of Dorna talent promotion director Alberto Puig.

Throughout each session, with a focus on crucial areas of both on and off the bike skills, riders were selected to progress to the next test, culminating in the final decisions of the 10 riders to line up on the starting grid for the 2024 IATC and 10 reserve riders to supplement the roster.

Archie and Rikki showcased their well-known ability and talent to each progress through the selection rounds, to end up both earning a place on the 2024 Asia Talent Cup grid and taking that next step in their road racing journey.

Since their early days in the bLU cRU SA Junior Cup series, Rikki and Archie have showcased remarkable growth, evolving their skills and success, in our SA State racing development program into national success within the Oceania Junior Cup and beyond. Both riders embody the core values of the SA Junior Cup, demonstrating unwavering commitment, notable growth, and a shared vision for success. Their remarkable journey to the Oceania Junior Cup and onto other opportunities reflects our state program’s ethos and the promising future it offers SA riders. Their dedication and evolution epitomize the very essence of the SA Junior Cup’s goals, setting the stage for exceptional racing careers for South Australian juniors.

Kym Bolto – Team Manager and developer of the bLU cRu SA Junior Cup:

“I am delighted and beyond proud of both Rikki and Archie who have both come through the bLU cRU SA Junior Cup series and then to compete in the Oceania Junior Cup.

To have 2 of our shining stars of the SA racing scene accepted into the 2024 Asia Talent Cup is a dream come true for me, this is exactly the reason I wanted to create a program such as this in our State, with the series only in it’s 2nd year, it is showing results already. I can’t wait to follow the boys in their journey in the 2024 Asia Talent Cup and I wish them all the best”.

Brenton Matters – President of Motorcycling South Australia Board:

“From witnessing their growth and skill development along the pathway of the bLU cRU SA Junior Cup into National racing within the Oceania Junior Cup and subsequently progress toward further successes in their road racing careers, it highlights the exceptional benefits that the SA Junior Cup provides for our South Australian riders. This opportunity fosters aspirations, offering a choice between pursuing a professional career in the sport or advancing personal development journeys, both on and off the bikes”.

With limited time for celebrations, Archie Schmidt, leading by just 1 point, will head into the final round of the 2023 Oceania Junior Cup here at The Bend over the 1st to 3rd of December, while Rikki Henry gears up for the opportunity to race at the MiniGP World Series in Circuit Ricardo Tormo Valencia, competing against the world’s best later in November after becoming the Australian Ohvale 160cc MiniGP Champion. We couldn’t be prouder of both exceptional riders and eagerly await their performances in next year’s Asia Talent Cup.
