Rising Stars and Top Finishes: South Australian Highlights from the ASBK Championship Round 5 Phillip Island Outing

September 9, 2024 Filed Under: ASBK, News, Road Racing

As the championship reached its boiling point and the points battles intensified, Phillip Island became a hub of roaring engines and fierce competition on the 7th and 8th of September for Round 5 of the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul. With class titles hanging in the balance, SA’s racers were right in the thick of the action, pushing the limits in a weekend of relentless racing!

Our riders certainly put on a show, delivering electrifying performances with top-10 finishes, hard-fought podiums, and personal bests throughout the adrenaline-charged weekend. Their grit and determination were undeniable, and we couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments. With two days packed with thrilling moments, let’s dive into just some of the performances that had us on the edge of our seats.

AMA Warehouse Superbike

Arthur Sissis looked set for a strong weekend after securing 7th in Qualifying 1 and improving to 4th in Qualifying 2. He delivered a consistent, hard-charging performance in Race 1, landing a podium finish in 3rd after a thrilling late race pass on NSW’s Cru Halliday. Unfortunately, Race 2 came to a premature end when Sissis was caught out on the tricky Turn 4 during the opening lap, ending his weekend early.

Marking his 100th ASBK start on the weekend’s grid, Ty Lynch got off to a strong start in Race 1, climbing five positions before losing two spots in the mid-pack shuffle. Unfortunately, his race took a downturn with a crash that ended his efforts early. In Race 2, Lynch bounced back with a fierce charge, moving into 3rd by the first lap. But Turn 4 proved tricky once again, as another crash derailed his chances. Despite his grit and determination, Lynch’s weekend came to a close when he had to return to the pits, capping off a tough round.

Michelin Supersport 600

Olly Simpson continued his relentless pursuit of a 2024 ASBK overall podium finish with a stellar performance in Round 5. After qualifying 3rd, just 0.243 seconds off pole, he turned up the heat in the second Supersport qualifying session, taking his first-ever P1 and setting a new qualifying record, beating the previous benchmark by 0.071 seconds. In Race 1, Simpson secured a solid 3rd place, but it was in Race 2 where he truly turned up the heat. Battling tricky conditions and intense pressure from NSW’s Jake Farnsworth, Simpson clinched victory in a breathtaking photo finish by just 0.016 seconds. This win earned him the overall victory in the Supersport 600 class for Round 5 and kept him second in the 2024 Supersport championship standings, now only 20 points behind the leader.

Race & Road Supersport 300

South Australian riders were heavily involved in the Supersport 300 top 10 battles throughout the weekend. Ryder Gilbert led the charge, finishing 8th in Race 1, marking his personal best round, with Jordan Simpson closely behind and Tara Morrison rounding out the top 10 to kick off her weekend.

In Race 2, as the competition intensified, Jordan Simpson and Ryder Gilbert maintained their positions in the top 6, with just 0.488 seconds separating them from the competition.

The weekend’s final Race 3 saw Jordan Simpson round out a brilliant performance, holding off rivals to secure 2nd place, just 0.295 seconds behind NSW’s Will Nassif. This ensured the Simpson family had a podium-filled weekend. Ryder Gilbert capped off his personal best weekend with a 10th-place finish in Race 3, placing him 7th overall for the round. ‘Tornado’ Tara Morrison concluded Round 5 at Phillip Island in 9th overall, following a 14th-place finish in Race 2 and an impressive 6th place in Race 3, bringing her ever closer to taking out another ASBK podium finish.

ASBK Round 4 South Australians Make Their Mark at Morgan Park Raceway

July 16, 2024 Filed Under: ASBK, News, Road Racing

Last weekend marked the highly anticipated return of the 2024 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia, with Round 4 at Queensland’s Morgan Park Raceway. Our talented South Aussies joined the packed two days of racing, taking on Australia’s fastest tarmac racers and coming away with a stack of top tens and even podiums. You could say we put on quite a show. Before we dive into the full weekend results for Team SA, let’s look at some of the weekend’s stories.

Showing more and more consistency in each of the premier Superbike class outings, Ty Lynch broke into his first top 10 overall with a 9th place finish after two consistent tenth-place finishes in both races, despite battling through a knee injury sustained in the weekend’s second practice. Returning home for scans, we hope to see Ty Lynch continue his charge in the next Phillip Island outing.

Continuing his strong form in the Michelin Supersport Championship, Olly Simpson came out of the gates firing. He secured third place in race 1 after an unfortunate final lap crash by NSW’s Tom Toparis, who was in second. In race 2, Olly made an early charge to take the 4th place spot, which he held for the remainder of the race after relinquishing it briefly on lap 5. Olly is heading into Phillip Island commanding third place in the championship, trailing second by just 7 points.

Returning from an injury sustained earlier in the Championship, Georgia Stephens pushed hard in qualifying, making up places before an unfortunate crash in the Race and Road Supersport 300. Bouncing back, she wrapped up her weekend with championship points in races 2 and 3.

Joining Georgia in the Race and Road SS300 action and doubling up by racing in the ShopYamaha R3 Cup, Jordan Simpson had a consistent weekend, finishing 7th overall in the SS300 class with 6th, 7th, and 8th place finishes in the three races. Currently, he is 4th overall in the SS300 Championship. After consistently finishing 4th in all races for the ShopYamaha R3 Cup, he sits 3rd in that Championship.

Scoring a wildcard entry and making his debut in the hotly contested bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup, Jai Stugnell cemented himself in all the track battles. Looking at home with the pace being put down in practice, he sat 7th overall before taking 8th and 7th in both qualifying sessions. Going from strength to strength, he put down exceptionally consistent and strong results, finishing 5th in all three races. He even posted the fastest race lap times in races 2 and 3. Not bad at all for a first ASBK introduction. We are sure to see Jai return to the ASBK grid in the near future.

Results – SA Takes On The Paperclip For ASBK Championship Round 3

April 29, 2024 Filed Under: ASBK, News

Round 3 of the 2024 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia, saw our SA tarmac knee sliders make the journey up to Queensland Raceway, also known as “The Paperclip”. With the circuit renowned for providing exceptional fast-paced lap times and edge-of-the-seat racing, round 3 looked to be a perfect storm for down-to-the-line victories & overall Championship leaderboard shake-ups. Of course, you better believe SA would be at the centre of it all. Before we dive into the round results and see where our riders are positioned in the Championship after Round 3, let’s quickly review some of the weekend’s highlights.

Alpinestars Australian Superbike –

Unitech Racing’s Arthur Sissis stayed in the thick of the premier class action, improving from a 9th place finish in race 1 to take 5th place in race 2 with a cracking fastest lap time of 1:07.984. This put him in 7th for the weekend and just outside the top 10 overall for 2024, in 12th place.

Michelin Supersport –

Continuing his dominant streak, Olly Simpson sits in the Championship second place overall by just 1 point ahead of Jake Farnsworth and Tom Bramich, both tied on 102 points. This was no easy feat, with heavy competition challenges in race 1 resulting in a 6th-place finish. He then avoided the race 2 red flag carnage of Jack Mahaffy’s crash to claim the 3rd for both race 2 and the weekend overall. With plenty of time left in the 2024 Championship, only time will tell if Olly can close the gap and take the overall lead.

Race and Road Supersport 300 –

From the get-go, Jordy Simpson set a cracking pace, posting the fastest time in free practice 2 and edging out the NSW powerhouse competition of Valentino Knezovic. He then qualified in 6th place, just 0.756 seconds behind the leader. Despite a setback in race 1 due to a late red flag, Jordy joined brother Mitch and the returning Tara Morrison in all the front-pack challenges. As we approach the halfway point, only 5 points separate Jordy and Mitch for Championship 4th and 5th places – there’s still time to break onto the podium for 2024.

Showing she hasn’t lost her touch, ‘Tornado’ Tara Morrison made her championship return after being sidelined due to an injury in Round 1 of the SA Road Race Championship. She demonstrated nothing but consistency, being a part of the front-pack battles and having a solid weekend with a 7th place finish across all the SS300 races, ultimately securing 5th place overall for the weekend and continuing her journey in the 2024 Championship points.

Of course, we couldn’t go past the SS300 race without mentioning Ryder Gilbert joining the grid as a wild card entrant on a Unitech Racing R3 machine. He looked as comfortable as ever with a string of top-10 race finishes, proving he is not to be counted out in the front-pack tussles.

The weekend took a tough turn for Georgia Stephens after a promising start knocking down her practice times; she had a big high side in the final practice session, resulting in a broken collar bone. Hopefully, we will see her back on the grid healthy and recovered soon.

Results – 2024 ASBk Round 2 – SA Braves The Sydney Motorsport Park Storm

March 26, 2024 Filed Under: ASBK, News

In the challenging wet conditions last Friday and Saturday, our SA riders put up some great competition against Australia’s road racing finest, all under the lights for round 2 of the 2024 Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul Australia at Sydney Motorsport Park. With a stack of top 10 finishes and even a podium, it’s safe to say our team showed outstanding resilience to bring about great results. Below is a breakdown of the weekend’s results; let’s take a quick look at just some of the weekend’s moments from our SA crew that shaped ASBK round 2 –

Making his Alpinestars Superbike Debut for 2024, Ty Lynch got to work getting his head around the new machinery. Starting with race 1 in 17th place, he improved his results further, finishing 15th and 13th in his second and third races, respectively. We’re predicting some top 10 results in the not-too-distant future for him.

Continuing his 2024 Superbike journey, Michael Kemp added his name to the list of unforeseen events during the weekend when, during the sighting lap of race 2, he shot off the track at turn 2 in the dark with no brakes at full speed. With a silver lining to the horrible situation, both he and the bike came out of the incident unscathed. In an unforeseen twist, the race start was red-flagged due to the track conditions and the weather, giving Michael the perfect window to switch bikes and join back in the action on the restart. In the end, he improved from his race 1 19th place finish to take 17th in race 2.

Olly Simpson had a challenging start to his weekend with an unfortunate crash in his opening SS600 race, but showing absolute determination and resilience, he turned that around and came back with a 7th place finish for race 2, maintaining his 4th place Championship spot.

Joining the top 10 contenders to avoid the SS300 class mishaps, Mitch Simpson started with a 5th place finish in race 1, then backed it up by jumping onto the 3rd place step of the podium for race 2, rounding out the weekend with an 8th place finish in race 3 – a pretty solid outing!

Jordy Simpson was well in the middle of the SS300 battles, building on his strong top 10 qualifying times to then add a 9th and 5th across the first 2 races, finally finishing in 4th place for his final race, just missing the podium by 0.019 seconds.

Joining the ASBK SS300 debutantes for 2024, Nicholas Yfantidis kicked off his first race with a 20th place finish but fought through the competition to take 16th place in race 2, then edged even closer to the top 10 with a 13th place finish, just 0.203 seconds behind 12th.

RESULTS – ASBK ROUND 6 – SA MAKES A STATEMENT ON THE ISLAND

November 2, 2023 Filed Under: ASBK, News, Road Racing

With the championship’s end in sight and points battles heating up, there was an electric atmosphere as riders took to the Phillip Island circuit for Round 6 of the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul (ASBK) from the 27th to the 29th of October.

Featuring numerous top 10 results, exceptional podium finishes, and new points leaders, our SA crew represented well, and we couldn’t be prouder. Before delving into the results, let’s highlight just some exceptional moments from the weekend –

Archie Schmidt – WE HAVE A NEW OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP LEADER!! After an intense battle resulting in a 5th place finish in race 1, Archie excelled in race 2, clocking a blistering lap time of 2:11.664 on lap 2 and clinching the race 2 victory. Ending with 5th place in race 3, Archie secured second place overall for the weekend, putting him in the lead for the 2023 bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup by a mere one point. It’s safe to say we’ll be on the edge of our seats during the final round, eagerly watching if Archie can maintain his lead after an exceptional season.

Continuously improving and leveraging her first overseas experience in Assen, ‘Tornado’ Tara Morrison had one of her highest scoring ASBK weekends to date. With consistent top 10 finishes in each race, she concludes the round just outside the top 5, securing a 6th place overall. An elusive podium finish might not be too far off in her future, and we can’t wait for it!

The battle for the top spots in the Michelin Australian Supersport Championships is intensifying. After a challenging weekend with the bike and securing 5th and 4th place finishes in the races, Ty Lynch enters the final round in third place overall for the Championship, just 2 points behind fellow South Aussie Olly Simpson. The gap is narrowing, with Olly experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions: a strong podium 3rd in race 1 turned to disaster after his clutch failed during the Toparis red flag restart of race 2, forcing him out of both the race and losing the overall Michelin Supersport Championship top spot to Cameron Dunker. The final round promises to be an incredible show, as the question lingers: could Olly get the upper hand back on Dunker or better yet a Championship SA 1 and 2 overall podium??

RESULTS – SOUTH AUSSIES CONTINUE THE 2023 ASBK CHARGE INTO MORGAN PARK RACEWAY

July 18, 2023 Filed Under: ASBK, News, Road Racing

Over halfway through the 2023 Championship season the points tables, not to mention on-track rivalries are really starting to heat up. With plenty of anticipation coming into this round, a strong South Aussie contingent loaded the bikes and made the trip to Morgan Park Raceway in sunny Queensland for Round 5 of the 2023 mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championships over the 14 -16th of July. Coming to the business end of the season, we’re seeing riders pulling out all the stops to gain valuable championship points and cement season rankings.

Boy was this round a standout, first of all, we can’t go on without mentioning just some of the fantastic results of the weekend –

Olly Simpson – Continuing to wow fans, he rode exceptionally strong from the get-go, claiming a 2nd place finish in race 1 to kick off the weekend. All warmed up, he continued on to take the P1 top spot for race 2, the round overall win and continue to lead the 2023 ASBK Supersport 600 Championship  – Well done and we can’t wait to see you bring it home for the final Championship races.

Ty Lynch – after crashing out whilst leading race 1 and dislocating his shoulder, Ty fought back to claim a third place finish for race 2. He currently sits 5th in Supersport 600 for the round and 3rd overall in the Championship standings – What a great comeback!

Archie Schmidt – Showed the Oceania Junior Cup field how it’s done. He nailed a second place finish in race 1, third place for race 2 and first place finish in race 3. This put him in the P1 hot seat for the round and second place overall for the 2023 Oceania Junior Cup. Pretty spectacular if I do say so myself!!
