NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS – TICKET SALES CLOSE THIS FRIDAY!

Ticket sales for the 2018 Motorcycling SA Night of Champions will close at 4.00pm this Friday, the 16^th of November, so if you are planning on attending what is shaping up to be a fantastic night of celebrations – now is the time to book a table or a seat!

In what has been a fantastic response to the 2018 Night of Champions, ticket sales are now above the 150 mark and all is looking good to reach the 200 mark – and with a great spread of nominees from nearly all the disciplines of the sport here in SA, this should be a night not to miss!

With a new venue, it has opened up the options to be able to celebrate and promote our great sport, with the opportunity to have a large display of bikes encompassing the whole sport, with everyone able to have a wander through the display!

With this in mind – here is the (approximate) time table of (some of the) events for the night – we’re not going to let on everything that will happen on the night as we are keeping a few surprises close to our chest!

5.15pm Doors to the Titanium Security Arena opened to guests, and the on court bike display

Access will be through the Corporate Entrance on the William Street end of the building (Eastern side), with car access to the car park from both, William Street and Crittenden Road. (Ample parking for cars with trailers as well)

5.45pm Doors to the Scout Deck function room open to guests, where the Night of Champions will be held

Access by stairs or elevator to the Scout Deck.

5.45pm – 6.15pm Arrival pics & ‘finding your table’!

6.05pm 10 minute warning!

6.15pm Night of Champions commences with the official welcome!

6.25pm 2018 MSA Regional Volunteer Awards presented

6.45pm Entrée

7.15pm Motorcycling SA Life Memberships presented

7.40pm 2018 MSA Rising Star Award presented

8.00pm Main Course

8.45pm 2018 MSA Hall of Fame induction with Bill Horsman

For those bringing bikes and gear for displays; court access is through the ramp on the Northern side the building, at the end closest to the grassed car park – Crittenden Road end, open from 4.00pm for set up. (All bikes/displays will need to be taken home that night due to the venue’s use on Sunday – thanks)

SIDEWINDERS SILVER HELMET MEETING THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!

Saturday night sees the running of the first Silver Helmet Meeting at Sidewinders. This meeting has been an important part of the calendar from the inception of the Club in 1976.

It is conducted over a 6 lap handicap and is designed to give the less experienced riders a chance to win against the more seasoned riders.

At each Silver Helmet Meeting the previous winner presents the Helmet to the new winner, and it is great to see the riders really involved in this presentation.

Along with the Silver Helmet Sidewinders will be running all Classes, the Novice Solos who are learning the craft before moving to the Competition Class as well as a huge number of little tackers riding Peewees, some as young as 4 years old. It is wonderful to see their enthusiasm, and they provide great entertainment for us all. They all aspire to be in the Solo Competition Class and this is a great way to start them off.

Gates will open at 5.30pm on Saturday with racing commencing at 7.30pm. Entry to the venue is $5.00 per Adult and Children U16 are free.

The Pit area is open to the Public until 7pm and will open again at the conclusion of the meeting, so you can speak with the riders and check out the bikes.

We have a fully stocked Canteen and Amenities, both of which are disabled friendly, so come and join us in another night of great competition.

BILL HORSMAN; THE 2018 INDUCTEE INTO THE MOTORCYCLING SA HALL OF FAME

Motorcycling South Australia is pleased and excited to announce that the man they call ‘Barney’, the great Bill Horsman, whose racing career spanned 50 years, will, on November 24^th, become the 7^th inductee into the Motorcycling SA Hall of Fame, and will take place at the Titanium Security Arena at Findon.

From the late 1950’s when Bill started as a passenger in scrambles for Laury Wilson to finally hanging up his leathers in 2008 Bill won an amazing 9 Australian Championships up until 1975 in his ‘first’ racing career, which included winning at places like Bathurst, Mallala, Albany in WA and in Tasmania as well.

Included in this is an ACU of SA Award for the most outstanding road racer of 1967, an inaugural win of the Duke of Edinburgh Trophy in 1972, with a 2^nd win in 1975.

This era also included the 1972 500cc & Unlimited Grand Prix at Bathurst, and against the great Kiwi in World Championship runner-up, Ginger Molloy, Bill came out on top in a race now regarded as ‘Bathurst’s Greatest Battle’ (see below as well) after a last lap & corner braking duel into Murray’s Corner.

Bill ‘retired’ at the end of 1976, but after 10 years he was persuaded to throw his leg over a Historic Road Racer, and so began his ‘2^nd’ career, a career that not only totalled over 25 Australian Championships, but also the chance to ride the Isle of Man in the Historic TT Races, and in his final ride, he came away with a win in the Classic Junior TT, as well as recording many 100mph laps and race times through his 9 trips to the Isle!

Bill is also an original Life Member to Motorcycling, being awarded that honour in the inaugural year of inductions in 2007, and now joins the late, great Kenny Blake (2017) as a road racing inductee into the MSA Hall of Fame.

SHOW ME THE MONEY – in relation to Bill at Bathurst in 1972!

Horsman showed true commitment to competing at Bathurst by driving there knowing he didn’t have enough money to return home! How many in the sport today would do the same? Although Horsman doubled his prizemoney in one race because the Senior and Unlimited races were combined, the payout was not in cash.

“I went home with a bit of a story,” he recalls. “My finances were such that when I left home I didn’t have enough money to get back. I thought that everything should go alright, but if the worst came to the worst, I could get a job in Bathurst for a week or two, get a few quid to pay for the petrol and get home.

“As it turned out I had a very good day, but they paid in cheques, and nobody would cash the cheques! I was going around trying to cash a cheque to pay for the petrol to get home.

“In the end, I had a new triangular Dunlop front tyre that I sold to Ron Angel, who paid $100 for it, which got me the petrol to get home,” Bill says, laughing.

“If it wasn’t for Ron Angel I might have finished up living in Bathurst!”

A GREAT TRAINING WEEKEND AT MUNGEREE!

Last weekend saw British Trial2 World Championship regulars, brothers, Dan & Jack Peace, who have headed Down Under for an off season holiday spend the weekend coaching some of SA’s finest trials riders, both young and not so young, at one of SA’s trials meccas, Mungeree, in the Southern Flinders Ranges!

With daylight saving now well and truly happening, it gave the chance for 2 full days of coaching, practise and also having a lot of fun as Dan & Jack, along with our own Trial2 WTC competitor, Connor Hogan and his level 2 coaching father, Hoges, used the full scope of Mungeree to throw the riders at rocks, hills, creek beds and of course, logs!

From the youngest of SA’s trials family, Isaac Schultz, Oliver & Harry Lancaster and Ashley Barwick to the teenagers like Haydon Barwick, Josh Rees and 2018 MSA Elite Riders, Alex Cowan & Lillie Yiatrou, as well as senior riders like Tom Lancaster and Kieran Hill, all ages and abilities were catered for, with even a little overnight drizzle settling the dust for Sunday!

Trials SA would like to thank the Hogan family for once again opening up their great homestead of Mungeree, with a special nod to Tyler, and helpers, for also feeding the masses all weekend, which included yet another great woolshed dinner on the Saturday night.

Said Paula Yiatrou, Lillie’s mum, about the weekend, “What a weekend! Lillie had an amazing experience and has come away with new skills and lots of practicing to do over the summer! A trillion thanks to the Hogan family for the awesome venue and hospitality, Connor for getting this idea off the ground and giving these riders this amazing opportunity and Tyler for the amazing food. Thanks also to Brenton (Hoges) for being the chauffeur… the off-roading was like white knuckle ride at times!!! And a big shout out to the trials community for being an awesome bunch of people.”

Isaac Schultz’s dad, Chris agreed, saying, “Top way to finish off the trials season with a great weekend of coaching at Mungeree! Connor Hogan, Dan & Jack Peace all did a ripper effort with the kids & super proud of Isaac & his efforts on the little 50, you did well mate & dad was glad we went! Big thanks to Tyler Hogan for the awesome hospitality!! Now, where is an 80…!!”

In return, Team Hogan would like to thank Jack & Dan Peace for the great efforts with our riders, as well as their long term supporters in Greg Knight at Rockhopping SA, Phil Whittle at GRO, Paul Arnott at The Hell Team and Jitsie.

The 2018 Trials SA presentation night was also held on the Saturday night, with a great get together in the Mungeree woolshed – the first time the woolshed has hosted the presentation night.

Great to see the community come together the end the season like this, with the 2018 SA Champions presented with their sashes, as well as the 2018 TROY Series SA podiums.

Tickets can now be booked online for the 2018 MSA Night of Champions, to be held on Saturday November 24^th at the Titanium Security Arena at Findon, off of Crittenden Road. Numbers will be strictly limited to 20 tables of 10 people each, as there will only be (comfortable) seating for 200 people to attend, so don’t leave it to the last minute – book now!

All booking are to be done via the online link on the Motorcycling SA website, and must be paid for when booking, there will be no pay later option made available this year!

South Australia is lucky to have some serious talent here in SA – the presenting of the Rising Star is certain to be a highlight of the night!

KAI NEWBOLD (motocross) A double SA Champion in 2018 as well as a top 4 finish at the AJMX riding for Team SA are just the top of the pile for this MSA Elite Rider’s fine season, and a fine way to finish his junior career!

KYLE MACHIN (dirt track) A dominate force in SA Dirt Track, the 2017 SA Champion has backed that up with also winning the SA Championship in 2018, and under lights at Victor last weekend!

LIAM MAY (speedway – and soon to be road race!) This MSA Elite Rider finished 8th in the FIM Youth World Championship in speedway as well as winning the WA & Victorian Championships – and is now on his way overseas for a road race trial for the Asian Junior Cup Series!

LILLIE YIATROU (trial) The #1 ranked junior girl in Australia in 2017 decided to forgo her final 2 years in juniors – and finished 3rd in Open Women at the 2018 Australian Championships, beating 2 Australian reps to do it, and 1st in the SA Championships – not bad for the 14 year old Elite Rider!

RORY HILL (enduro) Winning the 2018 SAORC J4 Class means Rory, with 6 wins in 7 rounds, finished the year as the #1 ranked SA junior in enduro, as well as finishing 3rd in the SA MX Championships, was the 2018 Prince of the Gulf winner and is yet another member of the MSA Elite Rider squad.

TAJ GOW-SMITH (Motocross) A South Australian Champion and a podium finish in his SA Motocross Championship for 2018, which also included winning selection for Team SA at the AJMX, Taj also finished 2nd in the J2 Class in the SAORC.

ALISHA HARRY (Trial) 2018 Junior Women’s 7-U13 Australian Champion, a first time member of Team SA, and 3rd in SA in Open Women and, at 10 years of age, one of the youngest riders to ride in senior C Grade in South Australia.

MAX PRICE (Enduro) In one of the hottest classes across all of SA motorcycling, Max finished 3rd in the J4 Class in the SAORC and in the process scored 6 podium finishes over the 7 round series, as well as finishing 6th in Australia in the AORC.

PATRICK BOWES (Speedway) The top pointscorer for Sidewinders in the series v Mildura, Patrick is looking for a big 2018/19 season, and he has started well, and is also a member of the 2018 Motorcycling SA Elite Rider Squad.

RYDER WOODROW (Motocross) The youngest Rising Star nominee for 2018, Ryder has had an awesome year, SA & Victorian Champion in 2018, as well as being a Team SA member at the 2018 AJMX where he finished 6th in Australia

AIMEE BUTLER (Motocross) The current SA #1 junior motocross girl, capped her year with a South Australian Championship and also finished with 2 top 10 finishes at the 2018 Australian Championships in Tasmania riding for Team SA!

JOSH REES (Trial) SA’s current #2 junior finished 4th in the B Grade senior class at the 2018 SA Championships and also got a fine 2nd in the Youth Class (Under 19) at the 2018 Australian Trial Championships (while still eligible to ride in the open junior class)

TEAGAN PEDLER (Speedway) SA’s #1 speedway girl and only female to have won the Silver Helmet (2016), in 2018 Teagan came 3rd Graham Baker Shield at Sidewinders, 4th in the SA Solo Championship and 12th at the Australian Championship.

JARED WATSON (Enduro) In his final year of junior competition Jared finished a great 2nd in the J4 Class of the 2018 SAORC, ending the year as the SA#2 in junior enduro, only failing to finish on the podium in 1 of the 7 rounds.

JACK McLEAN (Motocross) Jack finished the 2018 SA MX Championship 4th overall in the 85cc class, up from 7th in 2017 and also represented SA at the 2018 AJMX Championships in Tasmania

ALEX COWAN (Trial) – the current #1 ranked junior in SA, 3rd in senior B Grade and Open Junior runner-up at the recent Australian Trial Championships, and a member of the 2018 MSA Elite Rider Squad and Team SA!

CHARLIE MILTON (Enduro) – Newly crowned SA Champion in the J3 Class of the SAORC and #3 in the Australian Off Road Championship at his first attempt, a career best year for the Barossa native!

CHLOE BARTON (MX & Enduro) #2 in MX in the Junior Girls Class for 2018 and in the Top 10 Nationally, as well as being the highest placed girl in the Junior SAORC for 2018 and a member of the 2018 MSA Elite Rider Squad!

DECLAN CARBERRY (Road Race & Dirt Track) SA’s #1 junior road racing ace, who is currently leading the state series with a round to go, and is also very handy going sideways around a dirt track for extra ‘practice’!

PATRICK HEWITT (Trial) – The second nominee from trials is the current senior C Grade SA Champion and 4th ranked junior in SA, and also has a top 10 at an Australian Championships (2017) to his name in Open Junior!
