NEWS – CHLOE BARTON TACKLES THE 2022 AUSTRALIAN 4-DAY ENDURO

May 19, 2022 Filed Under: Enduro, News

A regular on the SA Motocross and Enduro circuits, Chloe Barton recently had a crack at the unforgiving Australian 4-Day Enduro in Erica, Victoria alongside friend and fellow SA rider Isabelle Keane. Unfortunately, both riders were forced to retire from the event after the first day, battered and bruised from the ordeal. We sat with Chloe to speak about her preparation, what happened in the event, and what’s next for her.

“Preparing for the event. I did as much riding as possible to get my bike fitness up and also went to the gym when I could,” said Barton. “Like most people, I haven’t been able to do much travelling over the last year, and have mainly just been on SA tracks. And I didn’t go to Mildura in March for Triggy’s Farm Enduro which was literally 3×30 minute motos in deep sand and hot weather!”

The lead up to the event was an endurance in itself, with a number of last minute hurdles thrown in Barton’s way. “I seriously can’t thank everyone enough who helped me get ready for the event because it was a stressful time! I’d had troubles getting moose tubes, tyres and other little things. But on the Friday before we were going to leave, I nearly set my bike on fire due to the lights’ wiring system firing! But we were lucky enough to have some good friends who could quickly fit a new wiring system that same night, and we took off for Erica the next morning.”

After arriving in Erica, Barton commented that the event was literally buzzing with activity. “Everything that was set up at the event looked so awesome, with all the teams and riders working together to get their bikes ready before going into scrutineering. It was great to see all the SA team riders under the same tent and there was a real sense of community amongst everyone. So many people jumped in to help me finish getting my bike ready, like trying to fit a side stand to my motocross bike!”

It was all systems go for day one, but a rocky first day saw Barton with some issues from the start. “On day one I had a few too many crashes which led to me being very sore,” she recalls. “As the Saturday night progressed I started to get some abdominal pain. I was hoping it would go away overnight but unfortunately it didn’t! I started day two and managed to get two tests in but by the time I had got to the fuel stop I was just in too much pain and overwhelmed. After I got back to main, I headed straight to the hospital to get checked out. Thankfully, I came out with muscular pain, it could have been much worse! I hate quitting, I can tell you that much, but due to the pain I decided to pull out.

“It was extremely challenging – nothing like I have ever ridden before that’s for sure! It was tough when the quicker riders had to keep passing me as it was very tight so was hard for them to just pass me, plus the weather conditions it made it super tough as well. I was tempted to pull out on day one but told myself no, I can do this! But I tried my best to keep going but just couldn’t.”

Not deterred, Barton is already talking A4DE 2023. “I definitely want to give it another crack that’s for sure,” she exclaimed. “I’m not done yet! It’s in Western Australia next year which is sand and that’s more my thing. Fingers crossed I can make it over there but in the meantime I will continue to work on myself as a rider and person

In the following weeks I have the 2022 Finke Desert Race coming up so that’s the next challenge and then few weeks after that I have Penrite Hattah Desert Race. Plus in between, I have the SA Motocross and SA Off-Road Championships to focus on.”

Motorcycling SA is looking for Expressions of Interest for the position of Team Manager for Team SA at the 2022 Australian 4 Day Enduro Championships, to be held at Erica, Victoria, May 4-7.

The Team Manager would be responsible for the logistics of Team SA whilst at the event, with 3 teams planned to be entered – Senior, Junior & Women – and will likely encompass a team of around 20 people (including support crew).

If you think this would suit you, and you possess a can do attitude, good communication and organisation skills, as well as a great sense of humour, email your EOI in the first instance to Saorc@motorcyclingsa.org.au – attention Wes.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN WOMENS TEAM TO THE A4DE – EXPRESSION OF INTEREST!

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN WOMENS TEAM TO THE A4DE – EXPRESSION OF INTEREST!

The South Australian Enduro (Off Road) Committee are looking to send a full contingent of official STATE TEAMS to the 2021 Australian 4 Day Enduro Championships, to be held in Victoria from May 4th to 7th, at Erica.

So, the SA Enduro Committee would like, for the very first time ever, to include a Women’s Team as part of Team SA, so is asking for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to be lodged with the Enduro Sports Manager, Wes Haydon, before the end of 2021 (December 31) – so if you would like to be a part of SA Off Road history, and the three (3) rider team, please send an EOI to; saorc@motorcyclingsa.org.au

Become a part of SA Off Road history, and look to perhaps join the long list of women who have pulled on the green & gold at the ISDE – where Australia are multi-time Women’s World Champions – the dream is real!

From MA about the event:

Motorcycling Australia (MA) is proud to announce that the Australian Four Day Enduro (A4DE) is back on the calendar for 2022 where it will be hosted by Victoria’s Dandenong Motorcycle Club at Erica.

Scheduled to be held May 4-7, 2022 the Championship returns to Victoria where it was last hosted in Mansfield back in 2016.

Conceived in 1978, the A4DE is renowned nationally for its fierce competition, as the riders tackle all elements of the off-road terrain over 3 days of traditional enduro battling against the clock and finishing off on day 4 with a spectacular final Motocross.

The Erica location will provide the perfect landscape for the highly anticipated event as it did back in 1987 when it was first hosted in the town. The event will include excellent spectator vantage points, plus easy access from the township.

With the 2022 A4DE to head back to Erica, Frank Gogol of the Dandenong Motorcycle Club commented:

“Many older Enduro enthusiasts will have fond memories of the 1987 A4DE at Erica with the Park Ferme on the edge of the State Forest that contains epic enduro trails in typical Victorian heavily treed gum forests. With the event scheduled for May, the trail conditions should be prime.”

“With the assistance of DELWP (Forests Vic) and Parks Victoria the trails have been approved for use and are vast within the surrounding State Forests. Long trail loops planned with the Park Ferme at the hub of the expansive trail network.

This event will create a significant economic benefit to the surrounding towns, bringing hundreds of competitors, officials and supporters to the region during the four-day event.

7 EVENTS THIS WEEKEND – YEP, SEVEN, COUNT THEM! – HEADLINED BY THE SA MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP FINALE AT GILLMAN!

A bit spoiled for choice this weekend, with 9 events on, across 4-5 disciplines this weekend, headlined by the Finale’ of the Eagle Trailers, Campers & Caravans 2021 SA Motocross Championships, presented by AMX Superstores at Gillman, but also with events in the Riverland, the metro area, the Murraylands and down the South East, seeing much of the state covered!

But, all eyes (or most anyway) will be on Gillman this weekend as they host the final of the hotly contested (across many classes) of the Eagle Trailers, Campers & Caravans 2021 SA Motocross Championships, presented by AMX Superstores on Saturday & Sunday.

This year’s Championship series, has given all of SA’s riders, as well as a number from Victoria (until COVID shut the border) a high quality series, one designed, not only to provide great competition, but also to develop their skills with a number of different venues with different terrain tracks – and a huge well done to all of the clubs, MRA, West Coast, Riverland & Keith!

So, with this in mind, this weekend sees;

This weekend, tomorrow in fact, sees the 7 round South Australian Reliability Trials Championship kick head into the second half of the season with the Levis MCC’s Gil Harris Reliability Trial, taking place out near Mallala, with the first bike due to leave at 12.01pm, for a 2 lap, 6 hour-ish journey around the region!

Round 5 sees and excellent 115 entries received, which coming after the 24 Hour Trial is great numbers, with the 24 sidecar entries leading the field away. And it’s a high quality field as the battle for Series Champion hots up, led by Robbie 2 Day winner, Zak Tremaine, Damien Jenke and the evergreen, Rowan Pumpa in the outright solo battle to join the Gil Harris honour roll!

The sidecars are also high quality, with ‘hostilities’ from the 24 Hour Trial, between Max & Sam Hutchesson, Mark Launer & Tyson Rohrlach, and Hector Evans & Shaun Buckley sure to continue!

The event is being fully catered by an amazing team from the Mallala Lions Club, who always do an awesome feed for all, so get behind it and grab some great food for a great cause!

Live timing will also be available at this event, head to www.sartchampionship.com, and also grab an event program at Main Control to get the riders list and directions to the spectator areas!

And here is the official welcome from Phil Altschwager, the president of the Levis Motorcycle Club;

Hi All

I would like to welcome you all to this year’s Gil Harris Reliability Trial, which is again starting at Alex and Angela O`Loans property.  We are very grateful and extend our sincere thanks to them for their support and help.  We would also like to thank the landowners who make their properties available to us.  I say it every year but without them, none of this would happen.  I would like to remind everyone to be mindful of their crops (which are not just some green stuff growing in a field) but their livelihood, so stay on the marked course.  Also, be careful on the roads as it is also the local Mallala Council who support us and we thank them also.

Well my friends, this year has seen a considerable improvement on last year (which isn`t that hard as last year basically it didn`t happen) except for a couple of trail rides.  As we have seen over the last couple of weeks, it can turn very quickly, so can I ask you all to adhere to the COVID plan we have in place.  This will be reinforced at all stages of today’s event.  Please follow all the COVID Marshals’ instructions so we can have a great ride in these trying times.

This year has a couple of new sections and unfortunately this has come at the expense of the river section (which I know will not worry some of you if it is a wet one).

If you have family members or friends watching you ride in the competitive sections please advise them not to enter those sections and to watch from the roadside only. This is important not only from a COVID-19 perspective, but also for their safety.

I will not be riding today and wish it was livestreamed so I could watch you all slide around yelling and screaming or maybe that was just me!

Thanks also to Lenny Burman, Steve Martin and Dave Hardaker who have done an awesome job as usual in getting this event marked and a shout out to Mark and Jonathon Zussino and Jon and Cameron Caruso for their help also.

As we all know, none of these events happen without a whole group of volunteers helping and you will see them all round the course from a host of local clubs who also chip in with their invaluable assistance – from sweep riders to control keepers as well as scrutineering, officials, sign-on and timekeeping just to name a few.

A special mention of thanks to the two ladies who make up a big part of the event for our Club, Linda Harris and Carole Tune.

The Mallala Lions Club will be coming along to feed us.

Wishing everyone an enjoyable and safe ride! I would like to say I will see you all during this event, but I am still in isolation for another couple of weeks.

Phil Altschwager

President Levis MCC
