24 HOUR THOUGHTS – THE DAY AFTER!

July 15, 2019 Filed Under: News, Reliability, State Championship

24 HOUR THOUGHTS

Social media being the creation it is, after an event many riders put up their thoughts on the event, as well as how they went and any thanks to sponsors and supporters who helped them on the day. Here is a short run down on the thoughts of a few of the riders (and supporters) who rode the 24 Hour Trial on the weekend, and includes riders, passengers, experts & clubman, as well as a couple of rookies as well!

Scott Richardson

What a weekend. Thank you Matt Lee for a great ride in the 24 Hour Reliability Trial. So good to be back on the bike after such a long break. Thanks for your huge effort preparing the bike Matt you did a great job.

Big thanks to all the friends and family who supported us for the weekend.
Thanks also to Barossa Motorcycles, Barossa Pool Services and Haynes Welding & Fabrication for their support.

Caroline Wilksch

Thank you to Wundy for getting us home. Despite a number of bike issues we managed to finish the 24 Hour!

Massive thanks to the Organising Committee, generous land holders, officials, all the control keepers and anyone else involved. Incredible to see this event run year after year on the generosity of volunteers!!!

Congrats to all the finishers, hard luck to those who didn’t … always next year.
Thanks Pam for following us around all event, keeping food and fluids up and encouraging us! Photo credit the amazing Jen Shanks xx

Well that’s 14 from 14. I started my first 24hr 15 years ago, I have only missed one year, making that 14starts and 14finishes. Thank you to all my family and friends for supporting me and being out there cheering me on, but mostly my wife for letting me do it. Haha. And still after 14 years it is the best feeling and a great achievement to finish the @24hourtrial. I reckon 11 of these finishes have been on WR450F’s so a true testament to the bike @yamahamotoraus. Another big thankyou goes to Greg Slats from GS moto for helping me get there every year.

Hayley Schultz (first ever reliability trial!)

Soooooooo…… WE DID IT…… WE FINISHED THE 24 HOUR…. omg the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Thank you to Kristy Krunchy Schultz for trusting me on the side and looking after me… Thank you to ALL the supporters, family and friends. At the time… I absolutely hated it and struggled but now… I did actually enjoy it…haha. If anyone has any photos or that feel free to send them thru… can’t believe I finished….

Jessica Giles

OMG we did it!

2019 24 Hour Reliability Trial – done! So very excited that Jamie and I got our #2from2, we should retire before we jeopardise our perfect record Jamie!

So proud of my brother for keeping us safe for that long journey, and our sidecar, she’s amazing!

Things can and usually do go wrong in this event, just as happened this year, so to finish this event with bodies and bike (mostly) intact is a huge blessing.

I love the difference in how Jamie and I celebrate, give him all the alcohol and I’ll just have a hot chocolate please!

Many people to thank for many things, but right now rest and relief that is done!

From Darlene Jenke about Rhys Jenke, (another 24 Hour rookie)

Well Rhys Jenke we are so proud of you. Completing your first full 24hr motorbike reliability trial. It was tough, a few hiccups, but you achieved your goal pushing through your tough moments & your physical & mental exhaustion to achieve your goal. We are so happy & relieved!! You made it. Thank you to your awesome mates for their encouragement & support to help you achieve your goal.

Thanks Liam Sander for keeping a corner of your eye on him occasionally whilst trying to race as well. Well done on your finish and hope the knee is ok. Congratulations to cousin Damien Jenke on an awesome ride as well. Thanks family, friends & all the well wishes throughout the race. Rhys you did it and remember the bike is repairable. Congratulations mate!

Sliding into Monday feeling a bit sore after completing the 24hr Reliability Trial over the weekend.

The stages were quite challenging with all types of terrain as the well as the dealing with the rain, cold and wind. But feel so good to complete it.

Just want to say a massive thank you to my sponsors as well as friends that came out to support and but a huge thank you to Daniel Annear for staying up all night, following me around and supporting me, really meant a lot knowing I had someone at each section.

Also a big thanks to all the volunteers that made this event happen.

Sam Florance

Absolutely stoked to have finished this year’s 24 Hour Reliability Trial. After a devastating DNF last year we were on a mission to finish this one. The end of lap one brought me a pierced radiator hose which tried to put me out early. Fortunately with a little bit of bush mechanics I was able to fix it well enough to get my steel horse going again at a cost of around 3 min trail time.

About 6hrs after we also had and encounter with a hidden tree branch in the dark which smashed one of my front lights. Luckily the LED globe was not damaged and I was able to continue.

Also had to play auto electrician in the dark to fix some wiring that threatened to put us out.

The track was rocky and tough, but also had some high speed MX style grass tracks thrown in for a bit of fun which I really enjoyed.
All in all it was a very eventful event that kept us on our toes and can’t wait to tackle it again next year.

Dad put the hard yards in all week prior preparing my bike for war after the Hattah tried to wreck it. Without his support I wouldn’t have made the start line.
Thank you to my sponsors; Ficifolia Lodge Kangaroo Island Sth Australia, Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action, Little Sahara, Kangaroo Island, Turner’s Tyre Service Dunlop Super Dealer and Castrol. Your continued support is invaluable. Also thankyou to my awesome wife Melissa Florance and family for allowing me to do what I love.

THANK YOU

Andrew Hank

Had a bloody fun ’19 24 hour, easy as track apart from a couple of k’s of rocks leaving SAPMAC control, and the muddy creek held up well at the Velocette  control. Didn’t lay it down or touch the tools /spares apart from the airfilters.
The lil’ 3fiddy is a joy to steer ,jump, hop and smash those dam rocks with the Biketune Suspension, and not once did it set a wheel wrong.
Thanx to the others riders around me for a great night of banter and laughs, Caden Rogers, Mackenzie Camp, Michael Kerin, Matthew Aimann.

Was cool to see the young guns having a red hot dip all night, enjoyed playing the fox and the hound with you Caden, thanx for keeping me going.
Thanx for the words of encouragement from all the friendly faces at the fuel stops and controls.

Thanx must go to #coastktm ,#Kessners, #platinumlighting, #Biketune,
#HEBO

Steve Sparkes (Rally Class)

Another great weekend of riding at the 24. Thanks to carol, paul and Lee-anne for coming up yesterday and the rally guys for making it so enjoyable. Really enjoyed today.

Highlight for today was getting a chance to do some training for the X-games. I think I shall call it “the sudden superman with a shitty pants landing”, nailed it too I might add.

Huge thanks to these riders, etc for their thoughts & photographs, and Jen Shanks from Pretend Photography for her awesome pics as well!

SA’S ICONIC 24 HOUR TRIAL – THIS WEEKEND FROM THE EUDUNDA OVAL!

July 11, 2019 Filed Under: Enduro, News, Reliability, State Championship

SA’S ICONIC 24 HOUR TRIAL – THIS WEEKEND FROM THE EUDUNDA OVAL!

The 2019 South Australian Reliability Trials Championships heads to Eudunda over this weekend, July 13 & 14, with the running of, arguably, SA’s most iconic event on the calendar each year, The 24 Hour Trial.

First run in 1924, 2019 will see the 95th anniversary of that first event and the 87th running of the event through those years, and this year it will be based, and start, from the Eudunda Sporting Complex on Saturday, July 13th at 11.00am and will be an event of 4 laps over the 24 hour period, with bike #1, all being well, crossing the finish line at 11.00am Sunday morning.

Who to watch in 2019; The 24 Hour website has a list of ‘who’s hot’, in both solo & sidecar for this year, with it being a very open field as they chase last years Champions, Riley Graham (outright & solo) and Mark Launer & Tyson Rohrlach (sidecar)!

For more information visit www.24hrtrial.com

Spectator viewing; Instructions to the spectator locations are now up on the 24 Hour Trial website, and will also will be included in the official event programme, which will be available at Main Control – with 2019 also playing host to a number of International riders from Wales.

Property respect;

The course runs through private farm land which has been generously provided by the local farmers, many of which are in crop this time of the year. Our priority is to look after the land and land owners, therefore with permission of some land owners, we have provided designated spectator areas for the public to access.

Access to these areas is permitted on foot only but camping is not permitted within the property. Please take rubbish with you when leaving these areas.

We also ask that all competitors and support crew (family, friends, whoever) respect our landowners and all signage regarding where you can and cannot go. If anyone is spotted in a location that is prohibited for spectators, both those support crews and the rider they are with will be asked to pack up and leave the event immediately.

Our property owners are the only reason we able to run this event, we would like to thank you in advance for respecting the private property we have been granted use of by not returning after the event.

Catering facilities, merchandise & programme sales; All will be available at Main Control, which will be at the Eudunda Oval in the Show Hall – also be aware of less room this year at the oval due to major renovations.

The 24 Hour Trial Organising Committee would like to thanks their very valuable partners for the 2019 event;

Platinum partners;

Silver partners;

Bronze partner;

FUEL – for non-competitors;

This year Sskids Tyres & Mechanical are the only spot to fill up in Eudunda with fuel, they are open;

Saturday 13th July; 9.00am – 12.00am

Sunday 14th July; 6.00am – 12.00pm

ALEX KRIEG JOINS THE KESSNER KTM OFF ROAD RACE TEAM AT WANBI!

June 24, 2019 Filed Under: Enduro, News, SAORC, State Championship

ALEX KRIEG JOINS THE KESSNER KTM OFF ROAD RACE TEAM AT WANBI!

Roger Kessner, from Kessner KTM Off Road Race Team, has put into place a 2019 initiative to help junior development in the Enduro/Off Road discipline this year by bringing in a junior rider under their team tent for a race weekend, so they can get the full experience of what it is like to be a part of a race team.

It is always fantastic when people / businesses invest in the future of their  specific sport, and this is what Roger and his team have done for many years, across many disciplines, and continue to do so – and in a way that not only highlights the future of the sport, but also some of the talented riders within!

A rider is invited to become part of the team for the whole of the weekend and receives the following;

  • Full access to the Kessner KTM Off Road Race Team trailer, as well as use of all of the team’s Motorex products
  • The rider and family receive support from team manager Scott Billing as well as guidance from team riders (track walk, mentoring, nutrition tips).
  • Suspension adjustments and bike set up from Grant Beale – Bike Tune. For this round Grant was available and he helped the whole team, he was out watching the team riders on a test and then would make relevant adjustments as needed.

The Kessner KTM Off Road Race Team has always prided itself on bringing a real family environment to the team, and they aim at developing riders to their full potential each year, as much as they aim at getting race wins each weekend.

The team is very supportive of its riders and team members and they also ensure that the fun factor always remains in the sport, and there are a lot of laughs and fun along the way.

The Junior rider who joined the team at Wanbi was: Alex Krieg

After having to calm the lad down after he was asked to join the team for the weekend – saying no was never an option apparently – Alex grabbed this opportunity with both hands – and didn’t want to let go, even after the event had ended!

Whilst this initiative is not ‘results driven’, to not put too much pressure on the young rider and keep the whole experience enjoyable, what was obvious to all who were watching closely was that the improvement from Alex as the weekend progressed was obvious to see.

And it wasn’t so much his speed that improved, as much as it was the smoothness in riding as the weekend progressed, which comes from bike set-up and thinking more about lines on the track walk, which he would have got from talking to the team mechanics, and the team riders.

And what did Alex think, well, here are a few questions that the team asked him after the event;

Congratulations and well done to Roger and the whole Kessner KTM Off Road Race Team for this great initiative!

The Kessner KTM Off Road Race Team aim to carry this initiative on throughout the remainder of the 2019 season.

Stay tuned for an announcement on who the lucky rider will be for the next SAORC rounds at TBA!

SAORC TO PLAY IN THE SANDS OF WANBI THIS WEEKEND FOR ROUND 2 & 3!

June 20, 2019 Filed Under: Enduro, News, SAORC, State Championship

SAORC TO PLAY IN THE SANDS OF WANBI THIS WEEKEND FOR ROUND 2 & 3!

The Ariel Motorcycle Club is proud to stage round 2 and 3 of the 2019 South Australian Off-Road Championship this weekend in Wanbi.

This year the club returns to their iconic track designed to put man/woman and machine to the ultimate test of endurance. This was the site for the 2015 round of the AORC series that was taken out by none other than the Dakar champion, Toby Price. That particular event won round of the series and also helped the club achieve Motorcycling South Australia’s ‘Club of the Year Award’.

Once again the club is running a full enduro format for the juniors (mirrored on the senior event). This gives our up and coming juniors a rare insight into what this type of racing is all about and puts them in good stead for their enduro racing futures.

The 2019 event features a significantly expanded course thanks to the tireless efforts of the club’s dedicated membership.

The Ariel MCC would like to take this opportunity to thank the District Council of Karoonda East Murray for all their support in making this event possible.

EVENT DATE: 22ND & 23RD OF JUNE 2019

EVENT FORMATS:

Enduro Format

Each lap of an Enduro course will typically take between 1 and 1.5 hrs to complete, the event consisting of between 2 and 3 laps.

Each lap consists of trail and typically 2 – 3 tests. Trail is timed to the minute and tests are timed to the second.

Riders leave in groups of 2 or 3 at 1 minute intervals from control points and individually every 20-30 seconds for Tests. Tests fall under two categories, cross (mx) and enduro.

Enduro tests are pre-ridden (first lap usually not timed) and are generally more technical through tree’s, hills, etc. Cross tests are not pre-ridden and are generally more open and fast. A generous amount of time is given between each lap for refuelling and rest. The enduro rewards riders with the perfect balance between raw speed and endurance.

Sprint Format – The course will be approximately 5 kms long and consist of sand tracks of fast open and between trees

Juniors and Seniors will swap between the Enduro and Sprint formats each round

WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING!

This weekend will see well over 200 riders take up the challenge of the SAORC for 2019, with the riders entered in a number of classes, which cater for all levels of riders, and are;

SENIOR;

PRO; the best of the best who will fight for the SA#1 plate

EXPERT EO; CLUBMAN C1, CLUBMAN C2, CLUBMAN C3

VETERANS 35-44 YEARS; MASTERS 45+ YEARS; OPEN WOMEN

JUNIOR;

JJ; 8-11 YEARS (65cc 2 stroke)

J1; 9-11 YEARS (85cc 2 stroke & up to 150cc 4 stroke, standard small wheels only)

J2; 12-15 YEARS (85cc 2 stroke & up to 150cc 4 stroke)

J3; 13-14 YEARS (125-200cc 2 stroke & 200-250cc 4 stroke)

J4; 15 YEARS (125-200cc 2 stroke & 200-250cc 4 stroke)

SO, WHO TO WATCH OUT FOR;

SENIORS

In the senior classes there should be a great battle for the outright, and the PRO Class between the current SA#1, Victorian Andy Wilksch, keen to keep his hard earned #1 plate for a 2nd year, and Riley Graham, who started the 2019 SAMX Championships last weekend well, and also capped 2018 with a maiden win in the famous 24 Hour Trial – but – look out for a couple of young upstarts to spoil their party!

Newly promoted to Pro Class, Will Price & Cooper Sheidow will be out to prove that last year’s top 5 outright placings as first year senior riders was no flash in the pan, and both have started the AORC (Australian Championship) in good form!

And with riders seeded by their first heat times, from heat 2 onwards these 4 riders could well be covered by 30 seconds, or less, on the track – will be some awesome viewing!

Possibly not far behind will be a couple of former juniors stepping up into the senior classes for the first time, 2018 MSA Rising Star nominee & SA#1 junior in 2018, Rory Hill, and former Australian Junior Champion (AORC) and MSA Rising Star winner, Jayden Rudd, who missed most of his final junior year last year with injury!

Look for these two outstanding talents to do what Will & Cooper did last year and upset all the established riders in the battle for top 10 outright honours!

The Clubman Classes have been well supported this year and make up a bulk of the field, with almost 80 entries received across the 3 classes, and there is so much talent in these classes, picking possible podiums before round 1 has proven almost impossible!

However, there will also be action aplenty, with MSA Rising Star nominees from 2018, Max Price & Jared Watson debuting in C2 & C3 Classes, plus they will also see the return of former Off Road guns, and current road race guns, the Simpson brothers, with Olly & Jordy in C1 and Mitch in C2.

JUNIORS

An outstanding total entry of 90+ juniors have entered for this weekend’s opening round, spread across the 5 classes, and like the seniors, it is virtually impossible to pick possible podiums with no form to go by, such is the quality of the entries (in the J2 – J4 classes at least, as most are returning riders, with JJ & J1 made up of a lot of newbies to the Championship)

Some names to watch out for though are;

In J4, Charlie Milton, 3rd in the AORC in 2018, this MSA Rising Star nominee from 2018 will possibly start favourite to lift the SA#1 Junior plate this year, and had a solid start to his AORC campaign last month. Look for Charlie to lead the way.

In J3, AORC regular, Max Leibekhnecht, will be at the pointy end of the class, as will a famous name in Haydion, with Kyan being the 3rd generation of his family to take up the SAORC challenge, with the multi discipline (enduro, speedway, motocross & trial) talented Clay Burnett one to watch as well!

In J2 keep an eye out for Emma Haylock, who has started her motocross year with some outstanding form and results, and could well be the dark horse in this class in 2019!

FREE ENTRY FOR SPECTATORS, HOT & COLD FOOD & DRINKS, 200 RIDERS WITH SOME OUTSTANDING SOUTH AUSTRALIAN TALENT – MAKING SANDCASTLES AT WANBI IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS WEEKEND!

SAMX ROUND 2 @ KEITH – A WEEKEND OF BRILLIANT RACING AT A BRILLIANT VENUE!

June 20, 2019 Filed Under: Motocross, News, SAMX Championship, State Championship

Round 2 of the Eagle Trailers & Campers 2019 SA MX Championships, held at Andy Caldecott Park in Keith was one for the ages, with fantastic racing across all grades at one of SA’s finest venues, with congratulations to the Keith & Districts MCC for hosting such an impressive event.

A large crowd witnessed the bright future of the sport here in SA on the Saturday, with some outstanding rides by so many junior riders over the day, which was backed up on the Sunday by the seniors doing the same, led by Brett Metcalfe, who showed all the back wheel of his bike as he went on the claim the Andy Caldecott Memorial Trophy in MX 1

(Pic on left courtesy from Aaryn Minerds as he describes below, with the pic on the right courtesy of Rachel Larwood showing the great crowd watching the action)

Said Aaryn Minerds

“I was not going to get the camera out on Sunday, but when Honda Motorcycles Australia Brett Metcalfe decides to throw down, I thought it best to point the lens in his direction and he did not disappoint, laying it low over the huge step down to grab the lead from Levi McManus in the final MX1 one moto.”

Awesome round at Keith for the second round of the SA State Titles. Managed to get some good starts and go 1-1-1 for first overall in the MX2 Expert class.
Massive thanks to Clint Gow-Smith for boarding me and helping me throughout the day and Ryley Newbold for prepping my gate.

Big thanks to the people that help me;

Coast Powersports; APR MX Development; Dunlop Super Dealer @minautocentre; SK Designs Australia; Banks MX Coaching @ TAtraining; Mum & Dad

Emma Haylock

Rnd 2 Keith State Titles went to plan.
Dad and I worked on what we needed to achieve this weekend. I managed to get a 1st in both the first and second race which took the pressure off me for race 3.
Made up some valuable points after a DNF last round.
Got amazing starts in all 3 motos which helped me.
Had some great battles with my friend Dakota, swapping the lead several times.
Looking forward for Round 3 at Ceduna

Many thanks to my awesome sponsors for 2019;

BMS Racing; Butlers Mechanical Service; Castrol; Tracy Ian Butler; Moto Adelaide; Titanium Security Australia Pty Ltd; Specialised Career Solutions Adelaide – RTO 32292; GAS Imports Pty Ltd

Chloe Barton

Wow that was a tough weekend for RND 2 of SA State MX titles, from bike not running Saturday.

I haven’t been well all week and today it seems to hit me the worst so much dad told me to pull out of the MX2 class and just ride the woman’s, but me being stubborn said no I’m riding.

As I went to the start line for race 1 I was feeling very nauseous and didn’t think I’ll make it through but pushed on.

In the MX2 I went 6,7,7 for 8th out right out of the 21 strong field.

In the woman’s I went 2,2,2 for 2nd outright and still holding onto 2nd in the championship.
A big thank you to Kelly for preparing me some food even so I didn’t eat much.
A massive thanks to all my sponsors;

BMS Racing; Butlers Mechanical Service; Castrol; Titanium Security Australia Pty Ltd; Painttech; Emar seats; Get Displays; Moto Adelaide; Utilities construction

Have to say a big thank you to the Rayner family for all your support

& from the hosts; Keith & Districts MCC

And that’s another titles done & dusted!!!

Both days went well with only a few hiccups, & the highlight on Sunday was the man himself Brett Metcalf racing in the MX1 Experts, & being awarded the Andy Caldecott Memorial Trophy, something our members will be talking about for a long time!

A massive shout out to all our members, volunteers, officials, C.R.A.B.S for flagging & all spectators who came & supported our club on the weekend!

A very special mention to Makayla Kitchen who came to the rescue when my camera decided to not work, & took on the fb page to promote & keep everyone up to date for both days of the competition. She is a very talented & kind human being & we are truly thankful for what you did!

We can’t forget our major sponsors for their continued support, without you events like this just wouldn’t happen!

Everyone at KDMCC is hoping you enjoyed the day as much as we did & thank you for the support.

All photos above, aside from Aaryn & Rachel’s, courtesy of the awesome Makayla Kitchen!
