INTERNATIONAL UPDATE FROM 4 TALENTED SOUTH AUSSIES!

Connor Hogan at the Trial GP 2019 Japan
After qualifying well inside the top 15 for round 2 of the Trial2 World Championship, Connor Hogan had a tough weekend at Motegi in Japan;
“A tough weekend for me here in Japan, with nothing really going right. Very muddy and slippery conditions across the two days. My riding wasn’t great on Saturday but I felt much more comfortable Sunday. However, I simply did not have luck on my side, I had many 5’s due to unforeseen problems inside the sections. Ended up 28th two days in a row which is very frustrating. Thanks to Dad for filling in as minder for the weekend.”
#rockhoppingsa #GRO #globalracingoil #Jitsie #thehellteam

Brian Anthony at the Sidecar-cross World Championship, Estonia
After scoring points in his first GP last weekend in France, this weekend was a bit tougher for Brian Anthony in Estonia;
“Kivioli GP was a tough one, in the qualification race I tweaked my leg/knee, which got was sore and I had a dead leg so struggled quite a lot with it.
Race one; we had a pretty good start from second row but got hit by another bike in the back which was no problem, but then in the next right turn we came together again, causing us to crash and Joe hit his hand on a post, but we kept on but with no googles and long way back, but in the end we decided to pull in to the pits to save ourselves for race 2.
In race 2 we had a good start again, but I had a lot of trouble with the leg/knee, I knew what I needed to do but had no power in my leg at all giving us bad stability on the bike. Then, to top off a tough weekend, with only few laps to go the engine started cutting out after quarter throttle, so we had to pull out unfortunately.
No excuses, races don’t stop for things like this, but we/I take positives out of it, as I learnt lots and my physical condition felt OK except for the leg/knee. So, will work on sorting that and keep working to do what I feel I can do, its certainly not easy but I wouldn’t be here if it was, I’d have stayed at home. And I finally got to go to the Kivioli GP, one I’d wanted to go to for so long! Week off next week then come back stronger at next German championship.”

Liam May in Germany
“Unfortunately I had to pull out of last night’s meeting in Gustrow due to a serious crash in race 2 resulting in a head and shoulder injury, also have withdrawn from the meeting in Herning Monday.
Hopefully I’ll be fit for next week in Czech Republic and Poland.
Thank you to all the medics and people who helped out!”

Brayden McGuiness in Europe!
Brayden had a busy weekend travelling around the north of Europe, taking in multiple countries, with some mixed results.
Friday night in Germany 6 points finishing 9th, 1 point short of a semi birth, with the meeting having 2 semis as per the Speedway GP format
After driving through the night to get to his Saturday Night Division 1 Teams Meeting, it was, unfortunately, rained off
And to finish the weekend off, Sunday night he scored 9 points in an open meeting at in Herning, Denmark

‘ROCKHOPPING SA’ 2019 SA WOMEN’S CUP (FOR TRIAL) & THE DIENER / HOLMES SIDECAR TROPHY – ENTRIES ARE NOW OPEN!

‘ROCKHOPPING SA’ 2019 SA WOMEN’S CUP (FOR TRIAL) & THE DIENER / HOLMES SIDECAR TROPHY – ENTRIES OPEN!

The Keyneton Motorcycle Club, along with Rockhopping SA and Motorcycling SA are excited to announce that entries for the 11th South Australian Women’s Cup & The Diener / Holmes Sidecar Trophy, to be held on Sunday, June 30th at Eden Valley, are now open.

For our Eastern states friends, this is also the first weekend of your school holidays, so SA would love to see all of the girls and women that ride head over for this great event, and camping options will be available from Friday night!

First run in 2009 this is the very first event in South Australian motorcycling where the girls and women headline the event and has twice been nominated for the FIM Women in Motorcycling Award, in 2016 (finalist) and 2018.

Through its history so far, the event has attracted over 70 girls and women from all states of Australia to ride, including the absolute legends of women’s trials in Australia, Bev Anderson, Michelle Coleman and Kristie McKinnon, as well as almost all of those who have represented Australia at the Trials des Nations (Ailsa Anderson and Jenna Lupo are the 2 missing), which includes SA’s own Sofie Kraft and Lillie Yiatrou.

As always, the SA Women’s Cup will feature a full range of classes for junior and senior riders; PRO (red line), EXPERT (yellow line), SPORT, MASTERS (blue line), NOVICE, JUNIOR A (white line), SUB JUNIOR (black line), MINI TRIAL (non-competitive & run of section)

2018 SA Women’s Cup Champion, Lillie Yiatrou, & 2018 Diener/Trophy Sidecar Trophy Champions, Shane & Matilda Kraft.

Trevor Diener and Philip Holmes are the Keyneton MCC’s greatest Champions, with 7 Australian Championships to their name as a sidecar team, and one each separately, for 8 each in total, and, they were also 10 time South Australian Champions and were never beaten in the Peter Sparkes Sidecar Trophy, and all in a career that only spanned a little over 11 years together as a team!

The naming of the Diener/Holmes Sidecar Trophy in 2009 was made to coincide with the Keyneton MCC 2 Day Trial, as it was at this event in 1988 that the curtain was drawn on their extraordinary career, with a fine farewell victory over the, then, newly crowned Australian Champions of Lawson & Gould from Western Australia.

The Diener/Holmes Sidecar trophy will once again feature the 3 classes; A Grade (red & white line), B Grade (black & yellow line) and Classic (black or run of section), with a Classic Sidecar defined by having an air-cooled motor and no sidecar wheel brake.

Also confirmed since the sup regs were approved is that the crew of Café Dee Wheels will be the caterer for the day with their awesome burgers, complete with homemade sauces & chutneys.

This year the event moves to a venue that hasn’t been used since 2004, on Jutland Road at Eden Valley, so for the majority of the riders, this will be brand new to them, with many of the awesome trials juniors not even having been alive in 2004.

The venue will lend itself to great viewing and a relatively easy walk around the rocks down to the creek and back!

ATTENTION ALL:

Also new for this event is that this will be the first trial in SA to use Ridernet as the entry point, with riders able to enter the event through this link; https://bit.ly/2QaPt4L

So, log into Ridernet with your licence number and follow the prompts to enter & please note the following points with this system;

  • You will only see the classes that you are eligible to enter
  • If entering other family members, you will need to log in with their licence number to enter them
  • Family discount is not yet available on Ridernet, so please hit the ‘cash’ icon that is still available for this event
  • If you wish to see the full list of classes before entering, view the supp regs for this event, which are located on the Motorcycling SA website here; https://bit.ly/2LPlIbi

For anyone using the Ridernet system to enter an event for the first time, and has any issues as they go, don’t hesitate to call the MSA office, 8332 9000, and the staff will walk & talk you through the process.

ANNOUNCING THE 2019 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN YOUNG ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR: SEAN GREALY!

ANNOUNCING THE 2019 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN YOUNG ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR: SEAN GREALY!

Unfortunately for the sport of motorcycling, SA’s Connor Hogan missed out on a 7 News Young Achiever Award last Friday night when the winner were announced at a ceremony held at the Hilton International.

Connor was one of 4 finalists for the Worldwide Sports Award, but was beaten out by international Karate star, Carlos Maya Koch, and Motorcycling SA congratulate Carlos on his award, very well deserved.

Connor himself, wasn’t able to attend the evening due to being in Europe preparing for the opening round of the Trial2 World Championship, which will be held this weekend in Italy. He was represented on the night by his mother, Tyler, and grandfather, Mr Bill Mudge.

Not being awarded the Sports Award also put Connor out of the running for the overall SA Ýoung Achiever of the Year Award, which was won by Sean Grealy, and like Carlos, motorcycling SA extends its congratulations.

Sean Grealy, 23 of Morphettville is committed to improving aged care services. He founded CARE Konnect, a suite of software enabling better communication and service quality in aged care, to solve his family’s own problem when his grandfather entered aged care services for the first time.

Care Konnect brings together vulnerable people, their families, and care providers therefore reducing social isolation and promoting healthy ageing in care.

It receives funding from investors and partnership deals with aged care providers.

It expects to connect over 3,000 families in 2019. Sean contributes to his community by working on start-ups like the University of Adelaide ThincLab and Hacker Exchange

Sean took home an additional $2,000 and an amazing overall winner trophy. Congratulations!

Nominations for the 2020 SA Young Achiever Awards will open once again later in the year, so start having a think about nominating some of the amazing young people involved in our sport!

CONNOR HOGAN MASTERS HIS FIRST SCOTTISH 6 DAY!

May 13, 2019 Filed Under: News, Trials

CONNOR HOGAN MASTERS HIS FIRST SCOTTISH 6 DAY!

South Aussie Trials rider, Connor Hogan, from Bangor in the Southern Flinders Ranges has just finished a very respectable 64th outright (out of 264 finishers), and 5th in the Newcomers Award at one of the world’s oldest and most famous motorcycle events, the Scottish 6 Day Trial.

Hoping to emulate his father, Brenton (Hoges), who rode and finished in 102nd position in 1987 (pictured below), this event was always on Connor’s ‘bucket list’, with trying to fit it in between studies and the World Championship over the past 3 years, 2019 finally saw it become a reality and Connor, one of 280 starters, grabbed the opportunity with both hands and didn’t let go.

Held in unusually ‘dry’ conditions – in other words, the creeks were generally dry & slippery, not running with foot deep water, and the moors on the transport stages didn’t want to suck your bike in like quicksand – there was still low temperatures, rain showers and some snow high up in the Highlands to contend with.

Below is the daily ‘blog’ from Hoges, who was there as Connor’s ‘pit crew’ and spent the week driving around the Highlands of Scotland keeping his charge well fed & hydrated – read on ….

Day 1 in Scotland is done and Connor has come through in fine condition. Finished well ahead of time with no drama. Like most of Australia, Scotland is surprisingly dry. Sunshine and mild conditions and as yet Connor has not encountered any deep bogs. Of course there are still 5 days to go so anything can happen yet.

Day 2 over here at the Scottish Six Day Trial. Connor finished ok today with 8 minutes to spare. The longest day today. 107 miles (not km) and 8.5 hours. Big loop taking in the Craig Lundie group, but still very nice weather for Scotland though there were a few showers and even some hail. At one point Connor said it was snowing right up in the Highlands. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is Connor’s early day (over the 6 days the starting order is rotated). First up is a trip on the Corran Ferry.

Day 3 in Scotland has concluded so Connor has got to halfway. He finished in good time on his early start day and was able to put on a new tyre. Today was the tour around Moidart peninsula starting with a trip on the Corran Ferry.  A little shorter today, only 77 miles! Still good weather and a number of waterfall sections. Both bike and rider going strong at this point. With the rotating start system Connor moves to the back of the field as his group is last away tomorrow.

Day 4 done. Big loop way down to the SE of Glencoe then back up north to Fersit. 101 miles in 8 hours including the standard daily ration of 30 sections. Again very good weather, only the odd light shower. Not such a good spectator day today but managed to catch up with both Connor & Luke at the “chairlift” group of sections, both going well. Tomorrow we return to the Moidart Peninsula, this time in the reverse direction for 95 miles

Day 5 done and dusted. A few showers around early but then it cleared off again. Riding in the back half of the entry allows for the sections to be more “run in” and Connor went well today. Sections were run around the Moidart Peninsula and it was a little easier to keep up with the riders along coastal roads and tracks. 8 hours, 95 miles. I was able to watch Connor in 4 section groups including a double clean on the final group of the day, “Rubha Ruadh”. So tomorrow we go into final day with sections near Ben Nevis, as well as famous sections like Pipeline (used since 1967) and “Town Hall Brae” in the centre of Fort William, the last section of the trial.

Day 6 and Connor has completed the Scottish. Clear blue skies greeted riders for the final days play for 2019. They initially headed south toward Kinlochleven take in groups at Callart, Lower Mamore and the famous Pipeline where Connor cleaned the lower 3 subs before parting with 2 points on the top sub. The competitors then work their way around behind Ben Nevis before two tough groups on the lower slopes of the mountain, Ben Nevis & Glen Nevis. Finally it is back to the centre of Fort William for section 180; “Town Hall Brae”. On this hazard Connor went clean but over a dozen “5’s”, a many “3’s” were lost on this narrow, greasy section. At this point the results are not finalised but Connor will certainly receive a First Class award plus the knowledge he has successfully completed the hardest multi day trial event in the world.

Team Australia! So in the aftermath of the SSDT Hoges also wanted to put a shout out to Luke Anderson (below with Connor), from the ACT and the only other Aussie riding the SSDT in 2019, who put in a stellar performance. Luke was riding number 126, so was only 9 numbers behind Connor and they ended up doing a fair bit of riding together. Luke finished in 124th position and also received a First Class Award. Luke did mention he would love to come back to the Highlands, not necessarily to ride a motorcycle but to do some hiking in this incredibly scenic area.

And from Connor; Scottish Six Day Trial all done. Happy to have finished in 64th for my first attempt and receive a First Class Award. Had some ups and down throughout the week. Some days I rode well and others were very frustrating but learnt so much from the whole experience. Looking forward to the first round of the World Championship in Italy in 2 weeks. Thanks to Dad for chasing me around all week in the van bringing food and water, as well as my sponsors for their continued support; Rockhopping SA, GRO, Global Racing Oil, Jitsie and The Hell Team.

Now Connor will be gearing up for his attack on the 2019 Trial2 World Championship, starting in Italy in 2 weeks time, and we all wish him the best, as well as congratulating him on his Scottish success.

And for the record – James Dabill (above left) won the SSDT for the 3rd time in 2019 – leading from day 1 and losing 5 points through the 6 days and 180 sections, to win by 2 points from the legend that is Dougie Lampkin (12 time SSDT winner & 12 time World Champion): and who was waiting for ‘Dibs’ at the finish, Dougie with a bottle of Champers to celebrate and toast the winner – sportsmanship at a high level and so typical of them both!

NATIONAL TRIALS DAY A GOOD SUCCESS.

NATIONAL TRIALS DAY A GOOD SUCCESS.

National Trials Day, which sees every state in Australia run a trial (on the same day) was introduced in 2018 as a way for the Team Australia Trials des Nations team to raise money to help get the team to the Trials des Nations each year, with this year’s South Australian National Trials Day held on Sunday, May 5th at Tungkillo.

2018 MSA Rising Star Award nominees Alex Cowan & Lillie Yiatrou both had first up wins in Trial 2 (A Grade) & Trial 3 (B Grade) at the National Trials Day event.

Run by the AJS MTC in extremely dry conditions at a new venue at Tungkillo, 40 riders attacked the rocks on the day, with over $1000.00 raised on the day to go towards the team, a team which includes South Aussies Connor Hogan & Lillie Yiatrou in 2019.

While Connor wasn’t in attendance due to being in Scotland to prepare for the 2019 Scottish 6 Day Trial, Lillie was in action at the event, and scored her first ever win in the Trial 3 (B Grade) class, a great effort by the 15 year old junior rider.

In fact, it was a day for SA’s younger riders to shine, with 16 year old Alex Cowan taking out his first win in Trial 2 (A Grade) with a fine ride to best the evergreen Steven Rees, with 14 year old Haydon Barwick in 3rd and another teenager in 16 year old Josh Rees in 5th.

Trial 4 (C Grade) saw the experienced riders keep the youngsters at bay, with Tony Baughan (on a countback from), Peter Arnold & Brian Lang just managing to keep the current Australian Under 13 Champion, Hayden Eardley off of the podium.

In Trial 5 (Clubman) it was another teenager in Jasmine Tarrant who led home her more experienced competitors on the day, with the single point win being one of the closest results in the senior classes.

(Above) Josh Rees tests out the limits of his rear tyre, while Jasmine Tarrant jumps for the exit of the section
(Below) Haydon Barwick shows his effort face, while the ‘future’ takes a breather during the day!

In the junior classes Ryan Tarrant had a good win in Junior A over his cousin, Charlotte Cowan, with the land owner’s son, Carl Henschke, rounding out the podium.

In Junior B and the battle of the boys & girls, this was a day for the girls, with Hayley Stephen leading home Ashley Barwick, with Isaac Schultz the first of the boys in 3rd and Harry Peterson in 4th.

The juniors in the South Australian trials community continue to lead the way and are doing some amazing things at these events and are well worth coming out to watch, with all trials having free entry to spectators.

The next event in in 2 short weeks time, on May 19th, with the ‘Keep Ya Feet Up’ trial being run by the Gawler MCC, again at Tungkillo, but this time on the main road to Palmer. To enter to ride, go to www.trialsport.com.au/entries
