MSA’S LEVEL 1 COACHES COURSE – A WEEKEND WELL SPENT!

October 25, 2021 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

The weekend of October 23 & 24 saw Motorcycling SA (finally) run a Level 1 Coaches Course, after a number of false starts due to COVID-19 and border restrictions!

Mark Gill flew in from western Australia to present the course, with just over 20 people taking up the offer – it would have been closer to 25, but the July lockdown meant the date change meant a number had to pull out – this time!

One of the fantastic things about the course was that all disciplines were covered, and there are now (by the end of this week) 20 new accredited Level O coaches in SA, and all are only 20 hours of practical coaching away from gaining their Level 1 Grade, and the brand new 20 are;

  • Alex Cowan (Trial)
  • Cooper Sheidow (Enduro)
  • Evan Byles (Road Race)
  • Alan Bolto (Road Race)
  • Kym Bolto (Road Race)
  • Brenton Matters (Reliability)
  • Phil Altschwager (Reliability)
  • Jason Carberry (Road Race & Dirt Track)
  • Wade Sweet (Road Race & Dirt Track)
  • Andrew Nicol (Speedway)
  • Adam Possingham (Speedway)
  • Scott Watts (Motocross)
  • Mitch Norris (Motocross)
  • Travis Bishop (Motocross)
  • Brett Metcalfe (Motocross)
  • Clint Gow-Smith (Motocross)
  • Kylie Collins (Motocross, Enduro & Road Race)
  • Chris Collins (Motocross, Enduro & Road Race)
  • Andrew Warnest (Trial & Presenter)

Huge thanks to you all for giving up your time to help today’s newbies become tomorrow’s champions!

Need to also thank the Sidewinders Junior Speedway Club for allowing the practical be held at their venue, and also current coaches, Alessandro Malatesta and Barry Golding, for attending and assisting on the day, plus a huge shout out to the speedway kids (tomorrow’s champions) who came out and allowed themselves to be coached during the day.

Motorcycling SA will now look to holding at least 2 courses for Level 1 coaches in the first half of 2022 so we can get even more coaches working with all of the new riders coming into the sport, as well as developing the great talent we keep unearthing each week out on the various tracks!

SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S ‘bLU cRU SA JUNIOR CUP’; LAUNCHING A BRAND NEW SERIES FOR JUNIOR ROAD RACE IN 2022!

September 10, 2021 Filed Under: All disciplines, News, SA Women in Motorcycling

SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S ‘bLU cRU SA JUNIOR CUP’, LAUNCHING A BRAND NEW SERIES FOR JUNIOR ROAD RACE IN 2022!

In recent years Motorcycling Australia have created a junior road racing program, called the Oceania Junior Cup, where riders compete at selected Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) rounds alongside the current stars of the sport here in Australia.

Motorcycling SA, in conjunction with Motorcycling Australia, and driven by the Road Race SA Sports Manager, Kym Bolto, and his dedicated Road Race Panel, are excited to announce that South Australia is set to launch of a brand new development series for junior road racing here in South Australia, the bLU cRU SA Junior Cup.

To run alongside the Junior Class of the South Australian Road Race Championships, this new Series will offer the chance for South Australian juniors to race in a similar style series to the national model, but, also have a clear pathway into that National series, the Oceania Junior Cup.

Motorcycling SA have secured 10 Yamaha R15 V2 150cc race bikes, that will be made available each year to 10 lucky junior riders aged 11-U16 who nominate and are then selected – and may unearth a talented South Australian rider, girl or boy, that may otherwise go unnoticed as there is no other opportunity like this.

In looking to find the next Ken Blake, Davo Johnson or Levi Day the bLU cRU SA Junior Cup here in South Australia aims to feed into the Oceania Junior Cup Academy, which has seen 4 riders go on to secure International rides in 2021, three in the Asia Talent Cup and one in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, the premier feeder series to world Grand Prix racing and MotoGP.

Mr Brenton Matters, President of Motorcycling SA is excited about the future direction of junior road race in SA, stating that, “This junior development series by Motorcycling SA will give diverse opportunities for junior racers and with the cooperation between Motorcycling Australia & Motorcycling SA, along with our fantastic sponsors, I am sure the series will be a great success. I want to thank Kym for his passion and drive in getting this series to fruition and Motorcycling Australia for their continued support.”

A major part of this Series will be to create a very welcoming and inclusive environment for all, which includes getting more female riders involved in our sport and more indigenous and multicultural riders, and appeal to riders in all of the MSA disciplines, to encourage cross discipline riding.

Included in the package being offered to prospective riders is the following.

  • 4 full race meetings per year, comprising practice, qualifying and 3 races over the 3 day meeting, so a total of 12 separate races for the year.
  • 1 race bike, fully prepared and ready to race at each of these meetings, including a mechanic on hand for all.
  • Riding gear (still to be confirmed) – helmet, leathers, boots, gloves and back protector at a hugely reduced price, with the leathers fully decked out in SA colours, and complete with all sponsor logos.
  • 1 three (3) day coaching weekend at Mount Gambier’s Mac Park Circuit, with Levi Day’s ‘On Track Rider Training’ coaching crew, with full details of what will be included still to be confirmed.
  • 2 other separate coaching days during the year to be held at a track to be decided on.
  • A number of other benefits, including media training and rider presentation lessons.

It is a huge opportunity for junior South Australian riders, and those who have aspirations of heading overseas to chase International success, and this inaugural Series is looking for talented riders from across ALL disciplines of the sport, not just road racing!

Motorcycling Australia CEO, Mr Peter Doyle is also excited about this exciting new avenue for junior riders to chase their dreams, “This a great initiative from Motorcycling South Australia and it creates the pathway to the Oceania Junior Cup and beyond from state level. Young riders will now have the opportunity to prepare themselves at state level and then move up to National level when they are ready. Having a state series with low cost access where all riders are competing on equal equipment will give all young riders the opportunity to not only show their skills, but also allow them to develop in a lower pressure environment before trying to step up to the next level.”

Motorcycling SA have asked for nominations of riders from every Sports Manager, of the most talented junior racers aged 11 to under 16 from Road Race, Dirt Track, Speedway, Motocross, Trial and Enduro, with some outstanding names having already been put up for consideration.

Of course, there may be others, and MSA would like to hear from anyone keen to be considered for a place in the squad, and to be a part of this amazing Series.

The approximate cost to be a part of the series will be $2500.00, to lease the fully race prepared Factory Yamaha R15  V2 150cc race bike for a 4 round championship, that will be held in conjunction with the South Australian Road Race Championships, and may also consist of a ‘stand-alone’ round at the Monarto Go-Kart Circuit.

For more information, including the full details of all costs involved, and to register your interest, please contact the Motorcycling SA Road Race Sports Manager, Mr Kym Bolto; roadrace@motorcyclingsa.org.au.

Looking forward to seeing his vision become a reality, Kym adds, “I’d like to thank our great sponsors for sharing our vision and enabling us to put together a race series that creates a pathway for our junior riders to ride in the OJC National Series, valued at $8500.00. We look forward to seeing the talented juniors, from all disciplines, who nominate for a place in this amazing series.”

Think the Series partners are excited about this, well, John Redding from Yamaha YRD stated that they jumped at the chance to be a part of this exciting new Series from day 1, adding, “YRD support the OJC National Series and the Western Australian Junior Series. When YRD heard of South Australia developing their own junior program we were more than happy to show our support and be a part of that series also, and look forward to seeing what brilliant talent SA uncovers in coming years.”

What has been truly amazing for a new Series, one specifically orientated to junior development, is the amount of industry support, already signed on to support the Series, with some locked into multiyear partnerships. Here we proudly announce that the 2022 bLU cRU SA Junior Cup (South Australia) partners are;

And finally, just to show the National support for this new Series, Kym Bolto would also like to put out a shout out to Ricky Rice Racing, who has been able to source 2 Come & Try Bikes. Says Kym, “Ricky went out of his way to help with them and store them at his property for a few weeks until transport could be arranged. Huge thanks mate!”

RILEY GRAHAM, COOPER SHEIDOW, OLLIE GEAR & EMMA HAYLOCK RIP IT UP AT HATTAH!

RILEY GRAHAM, COOPER SHEIDOW, OLLIE GEAR & EMMA HAYLOCK RIP IT UP AT HATTAH!

A huge weekend last weekend at the 2021 Hattah Desert Race for our South Australian riders, with some great results in outright and in class, with SAORC guns, Riley Graham and Cooper Sheidow both finishing in the top 10 outright, with Riley and excellent 6th and Cooper 8th!

Riley, 5th on Saturday in the Prologue (Top 10 Shootout), also stepped onto the podium with 3rd in the 450cc Class, with Cooper just behind in 4th, but it should be noted that the young Cooper was aboard a 350cc machine – the only 350 to finish inside the top 10 where he was surrounded by 450 & 500cc bikes! Superb effort that!

Junior, Ollie Gear had a day out that all would like, as he went about winning the 85cc Big Wheel Class on the Saturday, SA’s only class win for the event, with fellow junior, Emma Haylock also scoring a podium finish with 3rd in the Girls 11-U16 Class.

Other local riders to score a podium finish in class were, Will Price, 2nd in the 250cc 4 stroke class, Warren Carroll, 2nd in Veterans 35-44 years class, Michael Widdison, 2nd in Masters 45 years & Over, and Allan Graham, 3rd in the 250 2 stroke class.

There were also a heap of South Aussies to record top 10 finishes in class out of the many who headed across the border for the event – and the full results can be found here; https://speedhive.mylaps.com/Events/1878446

Huge well done to all of the South Australian riders, as well as their crews and supporters who travelled across with them.

WHO TO WATCH OUT FOR

The 2021 Championship will once again feature most of the usual suspects from the last few years, but with a few new combatants that have just arrived out of juniors, so the action on the track should make for some great spectating through the year!

Riley Graham will once again be back to defend his #1 plate from 2020, with the likes of Cooper Sheidow, Jayden Rudd, Sean Throup and Luke Bunnik once again trying to knock him off the top step of the podium, but this year add into the mix the likes of 2020 juniors, Alex Krieg, Carl Nitschke, Alex Head, Chad Sparrow and, 2020 Junior Rider of the Year, Royden Harrold, who will all be out to mix it with the established guns!

In the senior age classes, again watch out for the ever improving Rowan Pumpa and Peter Rudd to perhaps dominate their classes, especially if their early AORC form is anything to go by, as both are right in the mix for National honours in 2021, while Chloe Barton will once again lead a strong field of women into battle, and if her AORC form is anything to go by, she may be hard to beat in 2021!

But, it might just be the junior classes will be the ones to watch in 2021, as the Rising Stars, or Tomorrow’s Champions, show just what talent SA has at the present time, so get around these fantastic kids and watch them in action at all of the rounds!

The Gear brothers have set the AORC radar to ‘alert’ after round 1, with Ollie leading the J2 Class after going 2 from 2 at round 1 to lead the Championship, with older brother Davey in a podium position on day 1 in J3, before a crash put him out for the weekend, so he will be itching to bounce back from that – and will also have Thomas Lambert and Wil Carpenter to deal with on the track!

Also keep an eye out for the J3 guns from 2020, Clay Burnett, Seth Carpenter, Oliver Pitchford and Max Midwinter (currently 7th in J4 at the AORC), as they look to try and grab the #1 plate for juniors here in SA in 2021.

The Junior Women’s Class is also on offer for 2021, with Emily Lambert and SAMX gun, Emma Haylock, keen to get some rounds in, and with some quality competition, so the challenge is there to all of the SA Motocross & Enduro girls – get those entries in and get around the 2021 Championship.

SO, it’s time to fire up – round 1 entries are open and Coonalpyn is only a short month away – and one of the best things about the 2021 Championship; no rounds will require registered or permitted bikes – SO – motorcycles in motocross trim will be allowed!

With thanks to Bianca Smart Photography for the 2020 Championship series pics!

DECLAN CARBERRY RIPS THE BITUMEN TO SET A NEW RECORD FOR THE EASTER CUP AT MOUNT GAMBIER!

April 7, 2021 Filed Under: News, Road Racing, State Championship

DECLAN CARBERRY RIPS THE BITUMEN TO SET NEW RECORDS FOR THE EASTER CUP AT MOUNT GAMBIER!

Round 2 of the 2021 SA Championship, which also featured The Easter Cup

here is the race report from Declan Carberry, who set the track alight at Mount Gambier over Easter to become the youngest rider to have his name etched on The Easter Cup trophy. At 16 years of age, our 2018 MSA Rising Star is having a brilliant start to 2021, and a perfect 5 from 5 was the culmination of  the hard work he has put into his racing so far!

Here’s what he had to say about the weekend at Mac Park, where the Mount Gambier Club once again ran yet another high quality meeting, with some great racing as the SA Road Race Championship battles hot up!

Here’s what DJ220 had to say;

What an amazing weekend.

Friday was practice I ran the same Tyers I used for the whole 3 hour they had 70+ laps before I started the weekend. Dad changed the set up a little on the bike at home that week. Friday was the day to get used to the bike and changes made.

Everything was working well with the setup.

SATURDAY

Qualifying and race 1

In the first qualifying I went out to scrub in a new front and a 6 lap old rear tyre. I managed to set a lap of 1.11.3. This put me 1st for the 600cc’s and 1st for The Easter Cup. This made me the quickest bike for the first qualifying of all classes.

In qualifying 2 of Superbikes  Jamie Banks did a 1.11.2 on his GSX-R1000 and another rider did 1.11.2 so this placed me 3rd for The Easter Cup.

I then went out for my 2nd qualifying  to do 4 to 5 laps and see if I couldn’t do a quicker time than them. I pushed as hard as I could and did an 1.10.9 on my 4th lap. This was a new PB for me and it put me back on pole for The Easter Cup.

Race 1 was a 6 lap race. I got a ok start and got thought turn 1 in 1st position, then pushed for 4 laps till I got a big enough lead that I could maintain my gap to 2nd place. I took the chequered flag to take my first 600cc Supersport win.

SUNDAY

Races 2, 3 & 4 PLUS, The Easter Cup.

Races 2, 3 and 4 had great starts and tried to do the same as race 1 coming away with 3 more wins.

This giving me 4 from 4 wins in the 600cc Supersport.

By the time The Easter Cup race came around, I was getting nervous about it as I was the youngest person to put it on pole.

The 2nd quickest 600cc was in 12th.

On the start I was nervous as I had Jamie Banks next to me. The lights went out and him and I both had a great start.  Jamie just had  more legs to get in to turn 1 quicker Jamie had the inside line, I was right on him for the first 2 laps.

Turn 1 lap 3 I put it up the inside of Jamie and I didn’t believe I was in 1st. For the next 12 laps I pushed like crazy.

Jamie pushed me so hard I stayed in 1st but he kept the gap small.  The biggest it got was 3 seconds when we got caught up  in lapped traffic.

I came across the line and couldn’t believe I was now the youngest winner, and a 600cc, to have won The Easter Cup.

An awesome weekend where I was lucky enough to have won 5 from 5 races!

Thanks for your support.
