COMMUNITY SPORT & COVID COMPLIANCE EVENT WITH PROFESSOR SPURRIER.

September 4, 2020 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

COMMUNITY SPORT & COVID COMPLIANCE EVENT WITH PROFESSOR SPURRIER.

On Thursday, September 3rd, Motorcycling SA attended a Community Sport & COVID Compliance event at Priceline Stadium, along with 130 other interest people representing some 70 sports and their organisations.

Guest speakers were Professor Nicola Spurrier, Dr Chris Lease, Dr Janet Young, John Mannion and Katrina Ranford, with it being a huge emphasis on sport in the COVID era- and how we can keep playing, and why it is important to do so!

The seminar was opened with Katrina Ranford speaking about inclusion in sport and why it is important that everyone have the chance to take part in all sports, with everyone directed to the Inclusive Sport SA website for more details, www.inclusivesportsa.com.au.

Professor Nicola Spurrier, who has led the fight against COVID-19 in SA was introduced next and was very positive in what she had to say in how we, as a state, have combated the pandemic, but she also warned against complacency as the risk is still relevant, especially through overseas repatriates, as well as when the borders will slowly re-open as well.

Professor Spurrier also made the following points in regards the virus;

  • There will likely be no vaccine by October, with level 1 trials taking place at the moment in Australia, with level 2 and 3 trials progressing in Europe and the USA.
  • The virus shows no seasonality – so summer will be the same as winter in regards what we should be doing and looking out for.
  • So managing the risks will also be the same through summer as what they are at present.
  • If you are sick – STAY HOME – it is the one single thing that will make a difference!
  • The 1.5 metre distancing rule – the relevance of this is that it is the distance any droplets from the body will fall, whether this be sneezing, coughing or during exercise – so it is an important tool in combating the virus!

But Professor Spurrier was also very quick to point out that it is important that we keep our spirits up, as we are doing really well as a state, and that we need to keep doing what we have been doing – and that PHYSICAL DISTANCING is what is now required, not so much SOCIAL DISTANCING, and that this is very important to everyone’s mental health on the up!

The other speakers also had some very relevant points, including;

  • WHY SA HAS DONE SO WELL – the community response across the state, along with the media and the government have all played a part in combating the virus, and to keep it up.
  • INJURIES IN SPORT (Including with blood)
    • Priority should always be given to the injured athlete – as it always has been
    • Gloves should always be worn and available to all first aid staff
    • Only the people needed should be with the injured athlete – politely ask everyone else to move away.
    • Hygiene before and after treating the athlete – washing hands, etc
  • MENTAL HEALTH
    • Never underestimate the power of sport and its healing powers
    • There is no rule book to this pandemic – so think across all possible scenarios
    • Don’t be afraid to put your hand up and ask for help
    • Also, don’t be afraid to put your hand up and OFFER help – we are all in this together
  • 2021 MAJOR EVENTS
    • Take the current mindset into planning any major events for 2021
    • For events with 1000+ attendees, identify the key points of the event and plan and manage accordingly
    • If it doesn’t affect the running of the event – limit the number of attendees (remembering that this may not be possible due to many reasons, junior sport with parent/guardians, financial, etc)
  • INDOOR EVENTS – HAVE THEY BEEN TREATED HARSHER THAN OUTDOOR?
    • Firstly – there is NO evidence that the virus is more of an indoor virus than outdoor but;
      • Indoors, with less space, it has been proven to be harder to control
      • This may be due to less ventilation in many indoor venues
      • It is less likely to contract the virus outdoor
    • There is a solid world-wide evidence base around these points
  • PRACTICAL CHANGES TO SPORT – managing risks and staying COVID compliant across all sports
    • Analyse your sport, and practises and make changes as needed, like;
      • Only have people at practises that need to be there – so limit numbers
      • Stagger the starts of your sport (more specific to indoor)
      • Ensure all players and officials have their own drink bottles, etc.
      • Don’t share equipment – as much as is practical or necessary for your sport
      • Ensure people don’t attend sick – and if they do, perhaps ask them to go home!

Following this, there was a Q& A (question & answer) session from people in the crowd;

  • COACHING, what can coaches do to stay safe?
    • Physical distancing – as much as practical, depending on the sport and limit any contact to what is actually needed
    • Positioning of body (coach and athlete) and particularly the face – don’t talk directly, turn your face 45 degrees to each other
    • MASKS: The Government and Medical Professionals are not messaging that it is a requirement at this stage in SA, but this is not to say it may not become so in the future. It was also pointed out that under no circumstances should anyone be vilified should they choose to wear one (as that is their decision and it should be respected)
  • SWEATING; At this stage there is no medical evidence to prove that sweating helps in the spreading of the virus, as it has been proven that there is no difference in the virus from summer to winter. This also comes back to the 1.5 metre physical distancing rule in regards body droplet spread.
  • RESPONSIBILITIES; This question was raised in regards to the running of events in a public space, where people not connected with the event can come into contact with those attending the event.
    • The organisers of the event are only responsible to the people directly connected to your event – participants, officials, followers and spectators
    • The way to safeguard everyone in this instance, connected or not – is to have the COVID app, as it will alert if needed
  • INTERSTATE COMPETITORS/ATHLETES;
    • There are exemptions available for certain events where competitors can apply for exemptions, specifically where it comes to the success of that event
    • But at this stage it is still a wait and see with the borders and it is too early to make any concrete decisions
  • MENTAL HEALTH (a number of people from the Sammy D Foundation asked questions)
    • It is important to remember that it is not exclusive to today’s youth, and everyone should be checked on, regardless of age
    • Use technology, Zoom, etc, to stay connected with friends and family
    • Call or text your friends – just because!
    • Relax more – go for a walk, along the beach, in the country, etc
    • Think differently – outside of the box and what you’ve always done – as COVID has made this something that will now always be relevant
    • If you are struggling – reach out, ask for help
    • Also – if you see someone you think is struggling – reach out and offer help, volunteer, be there for them

All in all, this was a great seminar to be a part of as sport looks to move forward in a COVID world – and the importance of ensuring that sport can continue – and should continue, and we, as sporting bodies should be doing we do all we can to make our chosen sport happen – and not look for excuses to cancel events, but look for reasons and ways to ensure they run.

KIMBA EP MOTOCROSS SERIES, ROUND 2 AT KIMBA WAS HOT TO TROT!

The EP motocross series headed to Kimba for round two of racing and riders were greeted with perfect racing conditions. With a huge amount of work put into the preparation of the track and facilities from the local Kimba Council and the local members the riders were very impressed.
The day started off cold and wet but the action out on track was fast and furious with some of the states best riders showing up for a pre state title hit out with super tight action in the City Motors first corner and the Pt Lincoln 4WD tabletop jump.

50cc 7-U9yrs was dominated by young Declan Smart and Kylan Miller with Riley Mullen in hot pursuit ever lap. Young Tao Letton pushed hard to take fourth place but just couldn’t match the other boys speed. The two Ellerington brothers also rode great races and are improving every time out on their bikes.
65cc 7-U9yrs had the same result with Declan out front and Kylan and Riley scrapping for the minor placings. These boys showed great skills and stamina to ride two classes all day on such different machines as one is an auto and the 65 a manual so great stuff boys.

65cc 10-U12yrs had Koby Miller out in the lead from Blake Phillips who was chasing as hard as possible but Koby was just too fast.

The girl’s class was mixed in with the boys and young Nicole Modystach was riding with great speed pushing Koby every race. Sari Letton was also in the mix, like she always is and first-time racer Danielle Churchette put in a great day’s ride.

85cc/150cc 9-U12yrs was won by Ian Ellis who rode three great races and Koby Miller showed great improvement on his 85cc bike. Third place went to young Caleb Churchett and Haden Frost took out fourth place with this being these two boys first ever race day.

85cc/150cc 12-U16yrs This was a great class of racing with the top five riders all dicing for the placings but Axle Dean in first and Jacob Knowles and Jaxon Simunovic taking the minor places. Local rider Brodee Zibell was in the fight and took out fourth placing and has made big improvements in his riding.

Junior Lights was a great class to watch with the future stars of our sport pushing each other every lap with young Jack Lienert taking the win. Liam Buckley and Banjo Lawrence took the minor placings with Seth Gregory and Liam Frost improving every lap. The boys showed excellent skills through the Kimba Transport whoops and jumping the AG Save step-up.

(Left) Declan Smart gets on the gas in the 50cc 7-U9 Class, while John Barnes leads Adam Maclean in the Vets Class (Right)

Veterans Class was a tough class with Adam Mclean taking the win from John Barnes and Clint Letton in pursuit every lap. With 250cc and 450cc mixed together there was lots of roost blasted onto the trailing bikes on the Lienert Contracting straight. One of the rides of the day went to Adam Delongville who never gave up no matter where he was placed.

250cc Clubman was won by Eric Brereton from Angelo Karoussis and Pearce Reichelt taking the minor placings with some great racing.

450cc Clubman was dominated by Luke Story winning all races from Luke Bizewski and Mark Phillips who had great battles every race.

Expert 250cc class had Kai Newbold out front with Zac Hoffrichter and Sam Tilbrook trying hard to keep pace. Kai was last years state champion and he showed why with amazing skills and speed in all parts of the track and even raced the 450cc class on the 250 and pushed the bigger bikes to the limits.

Expert 450cc had three of the best riders in the state and Kai put on an amazing show of MX racing skills. This class was bar to bar racing with the Kemp Constructions second corner a hot place to be off the start with all riders fighting for the front spot. Siegah Ward took the win from Mitch Norris and Joshua Tilbrook in third place but any of the riders could’ve won. Siegah took the rider of the day award for his consistent and clean racing on display.

A massive thanks must go out to all of the sponsors that donated all the prizes and the helpers on the day and weeks leading up to the event. To the local Ambulance crew and Kirsty for arranging the team to look after any injuries that might arise. The Kimba Council for your support of our amazing sport and welcoming our club to put on the event.

The Wild Wild West hope to see a huge field at Whyalla on September 20th for round 3, and round 4, to be held on October 23 at Port Lincoln.

MA LETTER TO CLUBS & GETTING BACK TO RIDING!

May 14, 2020 Filed Under: News

FROM MOTORCYCLING AUSTRALIA;

13th May 2020

Dear clubs,
It certainly has been a challenging time for everyone in the past 2 months. It is encouraging however that it appears Australia is doing a great job controlling COVID-19.
With this in mind, we are pleased to announce that recreational based riding can now resume at your club under the below principles. This model is slightly different to what you may be used to, but it is just a temporary measure to allow your members to get back on their bikes if your state government restrictions allow it to occur.
 For all disciplines other than those listed in point 3, clubs will be able to apply for a Ride Park Australia (RPA) permit as per RPA conditions and guidelines in the attached document.
 For activities held on Dirt Track, Speedway and Road courses you will also apply for an RPA permit however current MA conditions and operational guidelines around these disciplines still apply. For further information please contact your SCB.
 A valid MA license is not required.
 Public Liability insurance will be in place for the time period of the permit which can be applied for via your state office.
 Those members that do hold a valid annual MA license will have personal accident insurance cover as per the Motorcycling Australia policy.
 The cost per rider payable to MA or your SCB is $15.00 which will be passed directly onto the insurance company. Your sign on sheets will be emailed to your State office and Motorcycling Australia.
 All current COVID-19 health measures and restrictions that are valid must be adhered to within your RPA event. Any breaches of these restrictions will be at the risk solely of the club.
 This is a temporary measure and will be evaluated once further restrictions are lifted.
If you have any queries, please contact your state office. Please note you would have also received a statement regarding annual licenses from Motorcycling Australia in the past day. This is the most current update on the status of annual licenses.

Motorcycling SA are thrilled to be relaunching the Motorcycling SA Elite Rider Program in 2020, after opening up applications only a few weeks ago, we have been inundated by fantastic applications from riders wanting to participate in the Elite Rider Program & the Elite Rider Conference coming up at the end of this month.  With the bar being set at a very high standard from the years gone past this made selection for this year’s squad very difficult.

The Elite Rider Program remains aimed at the finest & most talented young riders aged between 16 and under 21, to assist them in building their racing careers.  With the specific focus to ensure the highest quality riders are offered the opportunities of being part of the squad.

“South Australia has some great talent and it’s important to offer development opportunities to those who strive to be the best in South Australia. Our young riders of today need to have the same or better opportunities to make that elite level as some of our larger neighbours. The Elite Rider Program enables us to work closely with the best young talent in SA, and from a range of disciplines” says Brenton Matters, Motorcycling SA President.

In 2020 the Elite Rider Program will be condensed into two full days of intensive off bike training in a conference format aimed at increasing the selected rider’s knowledge in areas of fitness, nutrition, media and marketing as well as helping them with mental preparation. These tools will enhance participant’s performance & profile within the sport.

Each rider has been selected by Motorcycling SA because they have demonstrated excellent results over the past year(s).  In addition to their results they have been able to demonstrate that they have a great attitude and commitment, with the potential to be future champions of our sport and to become excellent ambassadors & representatives for motorcycling.
