TAKE 2 – 2019 MOTORCYCLING SA EVENTS CALENDAR RELEASED – PROVISIONALLY!

December 7, 2018 Filed Under: News

SAORC & SAMX June date clash now fixed with a huge thanks to our 2018 MSA Club of the Year, the Keith & Districts MCC for moving the SAMX round. This was important as it also kept the SAORC & Hattah Desert Race 2 weeks apart.

With the Christmas break fast approaching Motorcycling SA are pleased to be able to provisionally release the 2019 calendar, with 90% of all major events locked in for 2019, and a reminder that provisionally means that dates may change.

Motorcycling SA would like to thanks the Sports Managers and Clubs for working hard to get this out as early as possible.

Events still to be ratified, or added to the calendar include;

Round 3 of the 2019 South Australian Motocross Championships

The 2019 Sidecarcross & Quads South Australian Championship

The 2019 South Australian Dirt Track Championship

The 2019 Murray Williams & Wayne Kearvell Cups (sidecarcross)

Motorcycling Australia SART Championship

South Austalian Offroad Championship

SA’s MX GIRLS & WOMEN GET A HUGE BOOST FOR 2019!

December 6, 2018 Filed Under: News

In huge news for the 2019 SA Motocross Championship, 2 of the major supporters of the Series are joining forces in 2019 and have committed to give extended support to the outstanding female motocross riders here in SA, both junior AND senior.

Titanium Security Australia and Butler’s Mechanical Services will co-sponsor the Senior Women & Junior Women classes(es), as well as also supporting any girls & women that are riding in other classes, whether that be for other Championships, or in the ‘grommets’ 50cc Non-Competition 4-U9yrs ‘Demo’ Class.

With the 2019 Series still to have the classes confirmed, it is, as yet not clear on the naming of the Women’s & Junior Women’s classes will be, but it is certainly an exciting announcement to finish 2018 on for all involved in motocross.

When approached about 2019, both Ian Haylock from Titanium Security Australia and Tracey Butler from Butler’s Mechanical Service had no hesitation in saying yes to supporting SA’s motocross girls & women, and especially as 2019 sees both, a round of the Australian Women’s National Championship and the Australian Junior Motocross Championships being held here in SA

“Thanks for the opportunity to once again become involve with the MX series, in particular supporting both the Junior and Senior women in MX.” said Ian Haylock from Titanium Security Australia, “Anything any of us can do to promote females & juniors in sport is a good thing, not to mention having a daughter of my own riding, I certainly have a valid interest in ensuring females are given the same opportunity as us males.”

And from Tracey Butler, “Ian and I would love nothing more than to promote both women’s & junior classes for 2019 series. Thank you for the opportunity to support women in our sport.”

Look for more exciting announcements regarding our SA Women in Motorcycling, more SAMX news and 2019 in general in the coming weeks – it’s not only the weather that’s hotting up!

FRIDAY NIGHT IS SPEEDWAY NIGHT! 2018 SA JUNIOR SOLO SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONSHIP!

December 3, 2018 Filed Under: Dirt Track, News, Speedway, State Championship

This Friday night, 7 December sees the running of the CBS Bins 2018 SA Junior Solo Championship at Sidewinders, proudly sponsored by CBS Bins. This year the field is stacked with local riders, all vying to be crowned the SA Junior Champion, with gates opening from 5.30pm and racing commencing at 7.30pm

There will be an introduction of riders prior to the commencement of the racing and we look forward to a huge support for all of them. As always, we will have our full quota of Support Riders which delight the spectators each meeting.

Local riders will be joined by NSW & Victorian competitors to see who will take out this prestigious meeting.

CBS Bins have been a long supporter of Sidewinders and we thank them for their sponsorship of this meeting.

The meeting will feature 2 of the 2018 MSA Rising Star nominees, Patrick Bowes and Teagan Pedler, with this being one of the final times to see Teagan in action, as she ages out of junior speedway at years end, so get down there this Friday night to see one of SA’s, and Australia’s #1 junior girl in speedway while you still can!

Here is the full entry list for the SA Junior Solo Championship

Aiden Gray

Teagan Pedler

Harry Sadler

Maurice Brown  (NSW)

Patrick Bowes

Patrick Hamilton (Vic)

Nicholas Possingham

Jordan Hargreaves

Ashley Jansen-Batchelor

Unfortunately though, this is the first year in the 42 year history of the Championship that there has not been a full field for the Championship which is very disappointing for the Sidewinders club and junior speedway. Although still running as the SA State Championship it will not provide automatic seeding into the Junior Australian Championship due to lack of numbers, with all states suffering the same problem, being short on solo numbers.

Come on down and support our local SA riders – and while you’re there, perhaps inquire about how to get your kids racing speedway during the summer months, and in a very family friendly and supportive environment – plus it will help with development for the other disciplines of motorcycling.

As always, Sidewinders will have a great program of support classes and the canteen will be serving hot & cold drinks and great food!

AND COMING UP FAST!

Attention all junior sidecar teams. Sidewinders are running the 2018 SA Junior Sidecar Championship on January 5th 2019, and nominations are now open!

Last year saw a great field of local and interstate riders last season, so it is hoped to build on that and get another great field of junior talent this season! So, spread the word and put it on your calendar for another great night – to be racing, or spectating!

A huge thanks to Jack Spear from Spear Frames & Engines for supporting the Championship!

Supp Regs and Entry Forms are now available from the Motorcycling SA website. Fill in the Entry Form and email it to msterry512@gmail.com to make sure you get a spot.

ENDURO ARE LOOKING FOR A NEW SPORTS MANAGER!

November 30, 2018 Filed Under: Enduro, News, Reliability, SAORC, State Championship

After taking over the reins from Gerry Jongebloed as Enduro Sports Manager, and overseeing continued growth in the discipline, as well as the AORC now regularly visiting South Australia, Owen Rothe has now decided to call time on his overseeing of the discipline of Enduro here in SA.

Owen has led a tight team that has always strives to improve, not only the riding abilities of SA’s riders, but also the professionalism of how the sport and its events are run each year.

Now his successor as Sports Manager will be able to inherit a team and a sport that has a bright future indeed!

As we thank Owen for all of his efforts over the past 6 years, MSA also wishes him well in his future endeavors and hope to see him around the tracks in 2019 and beyond.

Expressions of Interest in the position of Sports Manager for the discipline of Enduro are now open – and will close on December 21st @ 5.00pm. Contact MSA office for details.

BILL HORSMAN INDUCTED INTO THE MOTORCYCLING SA HALL OF FAME

November 28, 2018 Filed Under: News

Motorcycling South Australia is pleased and excited to announce that the man they call ‘Barney’, the great Bill Horsman, who’s racing career spanned an incredible half a century has now become the 7th inductee into the Motorcycling SA Hall of Fame.

A 180 strong crowd descended on the Titanium Security Arena at Findon on Saturday November 24 for Motorcycling SA’s Night of Champions, and it was an emotional evening as Bill was honoured and celebrated for his fantastic career, one that spanned a total of 50 years from 1958.

During the Hall of Fame induction, where Bill was inducted by his nominator, now, fellow Hall of Fame member, Murray Williams, there was a question about Bill’s favourite highlight, or his most memorable race, with his answer being 1972’s Australian TT at Bathurst where he went wheel to wheel for the whole distance with New Zealand’s Ginger Molloy, in what is now remembered as ‘Bathurst’s Greatest Battle’!

It was more than appropriate that Bill selected this race, as the final surprise in being inducted was a video link direct from New Zealand with Ginger appearing on screen to share his memories of that Bathurst race and to congratulate Bill on his induction, which ended with not a dry eye in the house, and a thumbs up from Bill!

With many of SA’s Rising Star Award (under 16 years) nominees in the room, Bill was asked what advice he would give to the youngsters, and Bill responded with one easy sentence, “Reach for the stars!”

The 2018 MSA Rising Star Award winner was Declan Carberry, a fellow road racer, and Declan was more than keen to grab a few words from Bill, as well as a photo or two in a great night for them both!

The final word has to go to Bill, when asked what his career highlight is; “This is, I’m humbled and honoured to be remembered like this, and I thank everyone responsible!”

THE BILL HORSMAN CAREER – THE CONDENSED VERSION!

From the late 1950’s when Bill started as a passenger in scrambles for Laury Wilson to finally hanging up his leathers in 2008, Bill won an amazing 9 Australian Championships up until 1975 in his ‘first’ racing career, which included winning at places like Bathurst, Mallala, Albany in WA and in Tasmania as well.

Included in this is an ACU of SA Award for the most outstanding road racer of 1967, an inaugural win of the Duke of Edinburgh Trophy in 1972, with a 2nd win in 1975.

This era also included the 1972 500cc & Unlimited Grand Prix at Bathurst, and against the great Kiwi in World Championship runner-up, Ginger Molloy. Molloy had finished second to Giacomo Agostini in the 1970 World 500cc Championship and enjoyed a fruitful season racing in the USA in ’71, and what an amazing race it was, with Bill holding the advantage across the top of the mountain and Molloy having a speed advantage down Conrod, Bill came out on top in a race now regarded as ‘Bathurst’s Greatest Battle’ when, after a race long duel, it all came down to a final corner braking duel into Murray’s Corner, and with the back wheel skipping, Bill held on and reached the line less than a bike in front!.

Bill ‘retired’ at the end of 1976, but after 10 years he was persuaded to throw his leg over a Historic Road Racer, and so began his ‘2nd’ career, a career that not only totalled over 25 Australian Championships, but also the chance to ride the Isle of Man in the Historic TT Races, and in his final ride, he came away with a win in the Classic Junior TT, as well as recording many 100mph laps and race times through his 9 trips to the Isle!

Bill is also an original Life Member to Motorcycling SA, being awarded that honour in the inaugural year of inductions in 2007, and now joins Jeremy Burgess (2016) and the late, great Kenny Blake (2017) as a road racing inductee into the MSA Hall of Fame.\

SHOW ME THE MONEY – in relation to Bill at Bathurst in 1972!

Horsman showed true commitment to competing at Bathurst by driving there knowing he didn’t have enough money to return home! How many in the sport today would do the same? Although Horsman doubled his prizemoney in one race because the Senior and Unlimited races were combined, the payout was not in cash.

“I went home with a bit of a story,” he recalls. “My finances were such that when I left home I didn’t have enough money to get back. I thought that everything should go alright, but if the worst came to the worst, I could get a job in Bathurst for a week or two, get a few quid to pay for the petrol and get home.

“As it turned out I had a very good day, but they paid in cheques, and nobody would cash the cheques! I was going around trying to cash a cheque to pay for the petrol to get home.

“In the end, I had a new triangular Dunlop front tyre that I sold to Ron Angel, who paid $100 for it, which got me the petrol to get home,” Bill says, laughing.

“If it wasn’t for Ron Angel I might have finished up living in Bathurst!”
