SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S FOOTPRINT IN THE DAKAR

January 9, 2023 Filed Under: News

Dakar stuns the world with incredible feats of man and machinery taking on some of the most unforgiving terrain in an endurance race.

Since its inception in 1978, fans have tuned in and followed all the action of competitors taking on the course in Trucks, off road race buggies and amazingly even riders putting it all on the line, on their bikes (2 or 4 wheels).

Since the start Australia’s motorcycle riders have risen to the task and stood tall in the dunes with this year being no exception. Daniel Sanders has fought hard taking multiple stage wins so far with fellow Australian and previous Dakar champ Toby Price fighting hard through the challenges and rising the rankings.

Over the years South Australian’s have joined the list of worldwide competitors, riding hard for glory and to stand at the end as Dakar Champions.

Andy Haydon kicked off the South Aussie list in 1998 with a fairy tale performance at the Paris–Granada–Dakar. For his first and only ride as a privateer, he threw it all down through the 17 stages racing and being the first Aussie to take a stage win. He took the title win on 2 of the longest stages (8 and 10 hours +) and finished 3rd overall in a total racing time of 63 hours, 59 minutes, 19 seconds.

Andy Caldecott started his Dakar journey promisingly in 2004, at the last ever Paris Dakar with a 3rd on stage 6 but tragedy struck and had to end his event early with a broken ankle. Making his return in 2005 again as a privateer for the Barcelona-Dakar, he made up for lost time becoming the second South Aussie to win a stage during his campaign, with wins on stage 5 and 13. Taking a 3rd on stage 16 gave him a 6th overall for the series with a total time of 48 hours, 15 minutes and 42 seconds. Not being initially entered for the 2006 Lisbon-Dakar , Andy received a late call up from the KTM Factory team. He took the win strongly on stage 3, however tragically crashing on stage 9 losing his life. Stage 10 was cancelled in his memory.

David Schwarz (Left) made his KTM debut in 2005 at the Barcelona-Dakar as part of a team with Andy Caldecott. He came away with a well-earned 3rd in the 450cc class in 63 hours, 2 minutes, 6 seconds. David was unable to continue his previous placing success and ride in the memory of his late teammate Andy Caldecott, when the 2008 Lisbon-Dakar was cancelled one day before the intended start date due to concerns of a possible terrorist attach aimed at the competitors.

Returning in 2009, Dakar made the move to Buenos Aires where David Schwarz lined back up on the start, racing the 14 stages, with one stage cancelled coming 36th place outright in a racing time of 67 hours, 5 minutes, 24 seconds.

In 2012 Mar del Plata – Lima Dakar, David lined back up again to write history and become the first Australian to finish the Dakar for the 3rd time. He walked away in 43rd place outright after the full 14 stages with a total time of 32 hours, 41 minutes, 41 seconds and his name firmly locked in the history books.

Shane Diener won the 2013 Dakar Challenge he won a free entry to the 2014 Rosario – Valparaiso Dakar. After a huge 70 hours, 24 minutes, 11 seconds of 13 stages he placed 38th outright, becoming the 4th South Aussie and 11th Australian to earn a finishers medallion.

Allan Roberts joined Shane Diener in the 2014 Rosario – Valparaiso, making it the first time since 2005 that South Australia had 2 riders finish the Dakar in the same year. Allan just finished closely behind Shane in the overall 39th outright position after 134 grueling stages and a total time of 70 hours, 31minutes, 49 seconds. That’s only 7 minutes and 29 seconds on the world stage for 2 South Aussie Champions.

John Maragozidis rounds out the list of South Australians so far taking one of the worlds hardest motorcycle races. in 2019 John piloted his Yamaha quad through the exhausting Lima Dakar in Peru, after a a full 10 stages in 70 hours, 56 minutes and 32 seconds, he earned the placing of 15th in quads and made history as the first South Australian Quad rider to complete the Dakar.

We can’t wait to see the next South Australian’s to follow in the footsteps of their idols and take on the beast to make history. Only time will tell…

SPEEDWAY LIGHTING UP A HUGE FINISH TO 2022 – FIM 2022 OCEANIA SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONSHIO RECAP

January 3, 2023 Filed Under: News, Speedway

The scorching late December day set the mood for a night full of action packed Speedway racing, with 2022 fast coming to a close, as Gillman hosted one of the biggest action packed events to close the year. Both local and Australian talent went up against absolute exceptional international athletes, all vying for the 2022 FIM Oceania Championships title prestige.

Fast paced, down to the line racing  didn’t disappoint with UKs own 2021 British Speedway Champion Adam Ellis taking top spot from New South Wales’ 2017 World Champion, Jason Doyle in second and Western Australia’s adopted son, UK 3 time World Speedway Champion, Tai Woffinden.

South Australian champions were mixing it with the best with Brayden McGuinness  rounding out the night in fifth place overall with 10 points, trailed by Fraser Bowes in sixth, Jake Turner in tenth, Liam May trailing closely 14th, Steve Graetz in 16th and SA’s Teagan Peddler receiving a last minute call up as a reserves but unfortunately not getting a ride in the main event.

Victoria’s Jackson Milner took a huge fall in race 22 requiring medical attention and a trip to the hospital. We are exceptionally happy to report he has been discharged and returned home but is looking forward, as we are for him to come back and take on Gillman again.

PRESS RELEASE :-MOTOCROSS 2023 – GETTING BIGGER & BETTER EACH YEAR!

December 20, 2022 Filed Under: Motocross, News, SA Women in Motorcycling, SAMX Championship

The 2023 Motocross season is going to be another huge year, to say the least, especially as many of the Clubs are yet to put in their Club dates – due in part to waiting for the calendar to be released – and so those clubs can start their planning – here is the 2023 calendar – as it stands on December 20 2022.

As you can see below, the options to smash berms in 2023 is going to be huge, with the Sports Manager still putting together the 2023 SAMX Championship, building on the brilliant numbers that entered the 2022 Championship. With this in mind, there is still a round to be finalised, but the 4 weekend dates have been set to put in the diary.

Stay tuned early in 2023 for the release of the formats for, and a huge and exciting announcement (press release) regarding the 2023 Championships. This announcement is still in the finalising stage, but rest assured, it is pretty exciting for the future of the Championship going forward!

Please also keep in mind that there will be no round in July in 2023 – due to the AJMX being held in the July School Holidays at Alice Springs – seems like a great sport for the motocross side of Team SA to spend the holidays really!

The Tea Tree Gully MCC are also gearing up for a huge 2023, with not only their Club rounds set, but also, they are excited to be hosting the 2023 SA Historic Scramble Championships (SA-VMX) in September, so time to dust the old machines off as TTG will put on a huge show.

Meanwhile, over in the ‘wild, wild west’, the series that compliments the SAMX Championship so well year after year, the EP Series (Eyre Peninsula) will once again be run, kicking off the year for a lot of riders in Port Lincoln, before heading to Ceduna and Whyalla, before the finale in Kimba in June.

Keep an eye out also for 2 special events – as always, the annual Easter trek to Port Pirie for the, now, iconic King of the Gulf meeting, which will also feature the prince and Classic King of the Gulfs, as well as the SA Women’s Cup for motocross over the weekend.

Speaking of women, South Coast are very excited to be holding the first ever ‘female only’ Ladies Race Day, at Monarto on March 5 – keep an eye out on the South Coast socials for all the details on that one!

PLUS – just look below – Come N Try Days, Ride Days aplenty – and – 5 Club series dates already locked in – it’s seriously going to be a huge year for motocross in SA.

And now – here is the 2023 SA Motocross calendar – as of right now!

MOTORCYCLING SA’S 2023 SPECIAL EVENTS

December 19, 2022 Filed Under: News

While all of the disciplines run, what would be called ‘special events’, there are a number which come under the Motorcycling SA Banner, or in the case of the first one listed below, can’t really be put into a specific discipline – so, it has been added here!

Technically listed as a road race, the Sellicks Beach Historic Races, which would be the only event to challenge the 24 Hour Trial as South Australia’s most iconic event, will have its bi-annual running in early March – on the Saturday and Sunday of the March Long Weekend.

The Sellicks Beach races started in the very early years of the 20th century and several groups made use of the beach and the hills behind the beach, to race not just bikes, but cars as well and all trying to set new speed records.

These ‘Speed Trials’ ran until 1957 when they went into recess, but except for re-enactments in 1986 and 1992, there had been no racing on the beach until 2017 when the Levis MCC decided that 60 years was enough of a gap – and they bought it all back to life, and with a huge bang, so much so it now runs biannually and with great support from the local councils and residents, as well as the motorcycle community!

Entries for this most historic of events are now open and close on January 5th, unless the classes are full beforehand – head to www.www.levismcc.asn.au and hit the link for all of the details.

Also on the March Long Weekend, but on the Sunday and Monday, will be the first ever ‘MSA All Discipline Come N Try Day’ at the Monarto Motocross and Go-Kart venues, which are situated next to each other, with the motocross complex, the home of the South Coast MXC, able to cater for all of the off-road disciplines, with the go-kart complex looking after road race.

It’s a very exciting event to be outing together, and it will certainly be a first for SA, to have all disciplines together at one venue for all to Come N Try. Discussion between the Sports managers has also been positive, with bikes and riding gear being organised – so stay tuned for more information to be released on this early in 2023.

April 4 is also a date to put in the diary, as it will be the Annual General Meeting for motorcycling SA, to be held at MSA Hall on the 4th of April – all Clubs will get more info on this in early 2023.

The other event, where more information will be made available in 2023 will be the 20-23 Motorcycling SA Night of Champions, which will once again celebrate all things good about motorcycle sport in South Australia.

Special Dates – as of December 19 2023.

March 11 & 12 – Sellicks Beach Historic Motorcycle Races @ Sellicks Beach (Levis MCC)

March 12 & 13 – MSA All Discipline Come N Try @ Monarto MX & Go-Kart Complexes

April 4 – Motorcycling SA Annual General Meeting @ MSA Hall, Beulah Park
