TEAM SA – RIPPING IT UP AT ROUNDS 1 & 2 OF THE 2021 AORC!

April 19, 2021 Filed Under: Enduro, News, SA Women in Motorcycling, SAORC

TEAM SA – RIPPING IT UP AT ROUNDS 1 & 2 OF THE 2021 AORC!

A large team from South Australia headed over the border for last weekend’s opening 2 rounds of the 2021 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship, presented by MXstore, at Golden Beach, Victoria, which saw Australia’s best senior and junior talent on display for the season starters.

14 South Australia’s fronted the starter, made up of 4 junior and 10 senior riders, including expat Will Price, who now resides in Victoria.

To say that Team SA left their mark on the sandy and dry and dusty conditions would be a slight understatement, as after the dust had settled, Oliie Gear (J2) and Peter Rudd (EM – Masters) are leading the Australian Championship chase – a huge well done to them both, and we look forward to following their progress as the Championship unfolds!

Also in the chase for AORC honours with top 10 finishes are;
Rowan Pumpa, 4th overall in Vets – Veterans
Will Price, 5th overall in E1
Alex Krieg, 6th overall in EJ
Chloe Barton, 6th in EW – Women
Max Midwinter, 7th in J4                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Cooper Shiedow, 8th in E2
Luke Bunnik, 9th in E3

Davey Gear was also well in the mix in the J3 Class, until crashing out of 3rd place on day 1 put him out for the rest of the weekend! Look out at the next round though!

Full results;

The Team SA comraderie was also out in full force, with a great support team looking after all of the riders over the weekend, in the pits and cheering them on to the great results gained!

Some of the riders are now looking towards round 1 of the 2021 SA Motocross Championships this coming weekend at Gillman, while some will be looking to round 1 of the 2021 Tri-Series on May 9th at Eden Valley, the Rounds 1 & 2 of the 2021 South Australian Off Road Championship on June 5th & 6th at Coonalpyn, before heading to Kyogle in NSW over the weekend of July 17 & 18 for rounds 3 and 4 of the 2021 Australian Off Road Championship.

VALE DON MARKER, MOTORCYCLING SA LIFE MEMBER!

VALE DON MARKER, MOTORCYCLING SA LIFE MEMBER!

Friday was a sad day for motorcycling in South Australia, as we lost a Life Member of Motorcycling SA, Mr Don Marker, when the Speedway Riders Association announced his passing on Friday, April 16th 2021.

“It is with a heavy heart that report our Patron Don Marker passed away tonight at 5.55pm at Lyell McEwen Hospital after being taken to hospital Wednesday morning. Rest in Peace Don, you will be missed by all in speedway. Love to Muriel and family our thoughts are with you all at this sad time.”

And the following words (in part) are from MSA Board member, Dave Parker, who worked with Don for over 20 years at North Arm and Gillman ……

“Well Don, we did it” were words I used many times in those 22 years and a glimmer in his eyes with a “yes we did” was usually his quiet unassuming answer, and usually at 2am when it was just me and him left at the venue.

I can honestly say, I have not missed Speedway, but I have missed some of the people and even of late, I would drop past for a quick hello as Don was probably the one I missed most.

One of the proudest moments was acquiring the grandstand, when many thought it was “pie in the sky” and to present Don and Des (Dons brother) with the Marker Bros. sign, was something I was very proud of. Don, you will be sorely missed, hope you catch up to Gav and Big Bob up there, get a grader out, I might just come out of retirement when I get up there.”

Don, along with his brother, Des, received his Life Membership to Motorcycling SA in 2013. Motorcycling SA would like to pass on their condolences to Don’s family, as well as his extended speedway and motorcycling families. Vale!

Don, 2nd from left, with the naming of the grandstand at Gillman, and at the MSA Night of Champions, with fellow MSA Life Members, Don is 2nd from right in the front row.

Throw in the fact Alex Larwood is also returning to home soil and after a taste of the big stage last week with a breakout debut crunching a 2nd OA at his first senior MX2 National race Alex will be as focussed as ever to get on that top step around the Gilman track where he’s spent so many hours as a junior racing and training.

The soil is the same but the track is a new layout and the club has utilised the land with this circuit a smidge under 2km, lending itself to plenty of passing opportunities and improved spectator viewing.

MOTORCYCLING SA’s ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING WRAP UP!

Tuesday April 6th saw the Motorcycling SA Annual General Meeting take place, held at MSA Hall at Beulah Park, with President, Mr Brenton Matters chairing the meeting which started at 7.00pm.

It was great to see so many Clubs represented on the night, whether in person or online through Teams, easily reaching the required quorum, which saw Board members Paul ‘Rocky’ Warren and David Parker re-elected for a further 2 years onto the MSA Board.

Congratulations to Rocky and Dave on their re-elections, very well deserved, and what was also pleasing is that there were a total of 6 nominations for the 2 vacant positions. Great to see so many keen to get involved in the running of the sport at such a level.

So, with taking that into account, the Motorcycling SA Board of Directors for the next 12 months is;

Brenton Matters (President)

Rocky Warren (Vice-President)

David Parker

Tyler Hogan

Dominic Burman

Mike Hampton

We thank these people for their time and wish them well for the next 12 months.

DECLAN CARBERRY RIPS THE BITUMEN TO SET A NEW RECORD FOR THE EASTER CUP AT MOUNT GAMBIER!

DECLAN CARBERRY RIPS THE BITUMEN TO SET NEW RECORDS FOR THE EASTER CUP AT MOUNT GAMBIER!

Round 2 of the 2021 SA Championship, which also featured The Easter Cup

here is the race report from Declan Carberry, who set the track alight at Mount Gambier over Easter to become the youngest rider to have his name etched on The Easter Cup trophy. At 16 years of age, our 2018 MSA Rising Star is having a brilliant start to 2021, and a perfect 5 from 5 was the culmination of  the hard work he has put into his racing so far!

Here’s what he had to say about the weekend at Mac Park, where the Mount Gambier Club once again ran yet another high quality meeting, with some great racing as the SA Road Race Championship battles hot up!

Here’s what DJ220 had to say;

What an amazing weekend.

Friday was practice I ran the same Tyers I used for the whole 3 hour they had 70+ laps before I started the weekend. Dad changed the set up a little on the bike at home that week. Friday was the day to get used to the bike and changes made.

Everything was working well with the setup.

SATURDAY

Qualifying and race 1

In the first qualifying I went out to scrub in a new front and a 6 lap old rear tyre. I managed to set a lap of 1.11.3. This put me 1st for the 600cc’s and 1st for The Easter Cup. This made me the quickest bike for the first qualifying of all classes.

In qualifying 2 of Superbikes  Jamie Banks did a 1.11.2 on his GSX-R1000 and another rider did 1.11.2 so this placed me 3rd for The Easter Cup.

I then went out for my 2nd qualifying  to do 4 to 5 laps and see if I couldn’t do a quicker time than them. I pushed as hard as I could and did an 1.10.9 on my 4th lap. This was a new PB for me and it put me back on pole for The Easter Cup.

Race 1 was a 6 lap race. I got a ok start and got thought turn 1 in 1st position, then pushed for 4 laps till I got a big enough lead that I could maintain my gap to 2nd place. I took the chequered flag to take my first 600cc Supersport win.

SUNDAY

Races 2, 3 & 4 PLUS, The Easter Cup.

Races 2, 3 and 4 had great starts and tried to do the same as race 1 coming away with 3 more wins.

This giving me 4 from 4 wins in the 600cc Supersport.

By the time The Easter Cup race came around, I was getting nervous about it as I was the youngest person to put it on pole.

The 2nd quickest 600cc was in 12th.

On the start I was nervous as I had Jamie Banks next to me. The lights went out and him and I both had a great start.  Jamie just had  more legs to get in to turn 1 quicker Jamie had the inside line, I was right on him for the first 2 laps.

Turn 1 lap 3 I put it up the inside of Jamie and I didn’t believe I was in 1st. For the next 12 laps I pushed like crazy.

Jamie pushed me so hard I stayed in 1st but he kept the gap small.  The biggest it got was 3 seconds when we got caught up  in lapped traffic.

I came across the line and couldn’t believe I was now the youngest winner, and a 600cc, to have won The Easter Cup.

An awesome weekend where I was lucky enough to have won 5 from 5 races!

Thanks for your support.
