SA’s MITCH NORRIS TO COMPETE IN INDONESIA

July 11, 2018 Filed Under: Motocross, News

Multiple SA MX Champion Mitch Norris has headed to Indonesia to compete over the next two weekends, riding with KTM Indonesia in what is an exciting step for the 25 year old, who is originally from Port Lincoln.

The 2018 King of the Gulf winner will compete in a club style event this weekend (14th/15th July), racing motocross on the Saturday and a grass track on the Sunday at Pulau Rengas in Yambi.

Next weekend Mitch will head to Semarang and will compete at the 2018 ‘Powertrack’ Indonesian MX Nationals.

“I am really excited to be representing South Australia and Australia”, said Norris. “This would not have been possible without the great support of Motorcycling SA, the MRA MX Club, my partner Lucy and my family and friends. I only received the invitation on June 28, so it has been a rush to get my passport and everything else ready in such a short time, and the help I have received has been so awesome.”

Motorcycling SA wish Mitch all the best for his trip with it being fantastic to see another South Australian rider spreading his wings and heading off overseas to compete at the next level, and it would be a sure bet that all in SA motorcycling will be waiting to hear how Mitch goes this weekend!

Keep an eye out for Mitch’s results throughout both weekends.

STOP THE PRESSES; 2018 NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS!

July 3, 2018 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

Due to the availability of the brand new venue to be used, Motorcycling SA would like to announce that the 2018 MSA Night of Champions will now take place on Saturday, November 24th, with a kick off time of 6.00pm. This is 2 weeks later than the original date that was first released!

What is most satisfying from an organisation point of view, is securing this fantastic new venue, which will offer many new exciting possibilities when our ‘night of nights’ takes place this November!

With seating for over 200 people, and situated to the west of the city, but only 15 minutes from the CBD, this venue has car parking for hundreds of cars, and easy access for all ages, as well as a function centre where all seats will give a great view of the presentations!

The name of this great new venue??

Well, it is the home to two of SA’s most famous and successful sports teams, on a given Saturday night in Summer 8000 fans make the place get louder than any other venue in SA – and – it is the home to SA’s most awesome sporting mascot, Murray the Magpie!

If you are guessing the Titanium Security Arena, 44A Crittenden Road at Findon, the home of the Adelaide 36ers and Adelaide Lightning National Basketball League teams – then you are correct!

Heading to ‘the Arena’ not only offers the chance for an awesome bike display on their centre court, they also use the brilliant Titanium Arena Catering, so, it is now time to ‘GET IN THE MOOD’ and ‘SAVE THE DATE’ for 2018 and start thinking about booking a table at the 2018 Motorcycling SA Night of Champions.

Stay tuned for more information on how to book online, either a single ticket or bring a group from your club and book a table of 10!

A full programme of highlights is being put together at present as well, with the night to feature the annual awards and trophies being presented. This means it’s also time to start thinking about YOUR and YOUR CLUB’s nominations for these awards, as without your input there can’t be any winners of the awards – to select a winner, the MSA Board needs to have some nominations!

Ø  The next inductee(s) into the MSA Hall of Fame – to join our 6 ‘legends’!

Ø  Motorcycling SA Life Membership – for an outstanding life in motorcycling

Ø  The Frank Franklin Trophy – our most prestigious individual award

Ø  The Rising Star Award – with a new look for our most outstanding junior riders

Ø  The Regional Volunteer Awards – for our hard working volunteers

And, as always, the MSA Office staff will select the highly coveted Club of the Year Award – the yearly ‘battle’ between our brilliant clubs.

Nominations for the 2018 MSA Hall of Fame are already open, with all the details on the Motorcycling SA website; www.motorcyclingsa.org.au/about-us/Honor-Board

Nominations for all of the other awards will OPEN on Wednesday, August 1st; STAY TUNED!

MA Introduces New Crew Licence

June 20, 2018 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

Motorcycling Australia (MA) is pleased to announce the introduction of the new ‘Crew Licence’ as an optional licence that offers Personal Accident (PA) Insurance for any crew member supporting competitors in or around MA Permitted competition events. This license will be an expansion and renaming of the current ‘Mechanic License’ available on Ridernet and set up in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport (MoMs).

This new Crew Licence will be eligible for crew members, friends or family members supporting competitors in or around events and offers PA coverage that will see them receive the same benefits as MA Licensed riders. Licence holders will be reimbursed for new-medicare medical expenses such as chiropractic, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, dental & osteopathy for up to a maximum of $5,000, net of any private health insurance entitlements, and incurred within 52 weeks of the date of injury.

The Crew License also offers piece of mind for family members reimbursing licence holders up to $125 a night accomodation, if an licence holder is hospitalised more than 250km from home and cannot be moved to a hospital closer to home.

The benefits don’t stop on the track with access to exclusive MA discounts and member benefits such as discount codes for tickets, sponsor discounts, MA Newsletter and early bird opportunities.

MA Chief Executive Officer Peter Doyle welcomes the new licence; “This is great for our members, providing exclusive benefits and discounts alongside peace of mind at a race meeting. It’s all about providing crew members an option to be covered by insurance at an affordable cost.”

The crew license will remain mandatory to access the pits in Speedway, just like the mechanic licence but will be optional in all other disciplines.

Holders of a Senior National Competition Licence will not require a Crew Licence to benefit from the same coverage (this excludes Speedway).

Promoters may enforce that attendees require a Crew Licence to access restricted higher risk areas. This will be outlined in the Supplementary Regulations relevant to that event and must be approved by the relavant controlling body.

The cost of the licence will remain the same as the current Speedway Mechanic licence at $75.

2018 AGM Wrap Up!

June 19, 2018 Filed Under: All disciplines, News

TWO new Directors joined Motorcycling Victoria’s (MV) Board last Wednesday night, June 13 2018 at the Spotswood RSL.

MV club delegates, Life Members, the entire Board of Directors, MV staff and visitors attended the AGM at the Spotswood RSL in Melbourne to discuss general business on notice and elect two Board members to replace Richard Loft and Clare Nicholson.

Richard Loft was again appointed to the Board of Directors; Richard will serve for another three years, unfortunately this term will be his last, due to his service to the Board for the previous 3 years.

The newest Board member that will serve for a period of three years is Lauren Weaver.

In accordance with MV’s Constitution, MV’s new president will be elected by the new sitting Board at their first meeting which is set to take place later this week.

Lauren has over 10 years of participation in motorcycling which includes racing (herself), being a Flag Marshal as well as a qualified Level 3 Official, Assistant and Race Secretary for VRRC & Bracket Racing and most recently bring the secretary of the Preston Motorcycle Club since 2015. Outside of Motorcycling Lauren is a TAFE campus manager and University lecturer & Program coordinator. Lauren is keen to get involved with the Female Participation Program and help create more pathways into racing for all riders.

Richard has been involved in motorcycle sport for well over 25 years, has been President/Chairman of the Motorcycling Victoria Board for the last 2 years, as well as being the president of Harley Club of Victoria. Richard has been on the MV Dirt Track Management Committee for four years.

MV’s Chief Executive Officer, Robert Mestrom, is looking forward to working with the two newly appointed Board members; to continue to develop an even stronger future for motorcycle sport in Victoria: “I am looking forward to continuing to work with Richard. Richard has a great passion for the sport and continues to strive to make Motorcycling Victoria the best it can be! I am also excited to work with Lauren, with such a rich involvement in the sport I am sure we will see great things!” Robert said.

“I’d also like to thank serving members Clare Nicholson for her terrific contribution to not only the Board of Directors but to motorcycle sport as a whole. Her contributions have been immeasurable and won’t ever be forgotten,” Robert added.

The Peter Sparkes Trophy 2018

June 13, 2018 Filed Under: News, Trials

2018 sees the AJS MTC celebrating 90 years as an active club in Motorcycling SA. One of the first 5 Clubs to be born out of the MCC of SA in the 1920’s, the Club has a rich and detailed history that reaches out to most disciplines of motorcycling, but now in the present day concentrates on the discipline of trials.

And to form part of their 2018 celebrations, their long running Peter Sparkes Trophy, run predominately for trials sidecars will, this year, become a 2 day event to be held on a property at ‘Iconic Tungkillo’ and will feature options to ride for one or both days

For those travelling from afar, or even from across borders, overnight camping is welcomed, and on the Saturday night will be complete with an evening around the bonfire, and for Sunday lunch, Deenice Catering will be there with their awesome food!

The Peter Sparkes Sidecar Trophy, first held in 1975, is Australia’s oldest sidecar trophy in trials, and was named to honour AJS and Motorcycling SA Life Member, Mr Peter Sparkes. Peter is now in his 90’s, but if health and weather permits, it is likely that Peter will make an appearance at ‘his’ event over the course of the weekend.

For all the details on this event, as well as where to get the supp regs & how to enter online, head to www.trialsport.com.au and follow the links to SA trial entries!

And while the Peter Sparkes Sidecar Trophy event is aimed at sidecars – A Grade, B Grade & the Classics, there will be a full range of classes for the solo riders – from Expert ride down to Mini Trial, and not forgetting the old bikes as well, who will have a blue & white line to choose from!

AND: Non-competitive classes and 1 event licences will also be available, so drag the old trials iron out from the back of the shed, dust it off, and come out, have a ride and help one of Australia’s oldest motorcycle clubs celebrate a very significant milestone in a very appropriate way – by throwing a leg over!

The countdown to FINKE 2018 is well and truly on!

June 13, 2018 Filed Under: News

The 2018 Tatts Finke Desert Race is now only days away from kicking off in the heart of Australia at Alice Springs, with this year seeing a huge South Aussie contingent descending on the ‘red heart’ to do battle along the old Ghan railway line!

Of the 624 motorcycle entries for the 2018 Finke, 104 are from South Australia, in what might well be the largest ever entry from our state! Led by the 2017 runner-up in Ivan Long, this is also one of the strongest line ups of SA talent to do battle with some for Australia’s greatest desert races, with former winner, and Dakar Rallye winner, Toby Price, once again the likely man to beat! He will also be the man to watch as he once again chases double glory and a win on 2 wheels and 4 wheels in the same year!

SA has never had an outright winner in this most famous desert race, and perhaps the time might be right in 2018 for Ivan to break through and finally get that elusive win. 2017 saw him fastest by a long way on the return journey from Finke to Alice on day 2, but day 1 was his demise with the loss of his back brake, with the minutes it cost to sort the issue the difference between 1st & 2nd!

4th last year, and to have 2 Croweaters in the top 5 was a brilliant local effort, Mount Gambier’s Kent Collins, is back this year to try and go at least 1 better and grab a podium spot, and a best ever finish! And wouldn’t it be awesome to see 2 South Aussies on the podium of Australia’s famous desert classic!

Also looking to get in and amongst the top 20, and with a good chance of a top 10 finish are the ‘Throup Troop’, brothers Sean, Tristan & Nick, who have all started the year strongly in SAORC & SART rounds, and will be out to beat each other for family bragging rights as well!

Also look out for SAMX rider (and coach) Daniel Banks, as well as former MX rider Brett Haydon, sidecar ace Sam Hutchesson having a ride without a 3rd wheel for a change, as well as the father & son combo of, MSA president, Brenton Matters and his lad, Jake, with more family bragging rights at stake!

Also, keep an eye out for another sidecar ace in Matthew Neldner, who is heading to Finke armed with his trusty ‘ole’ Honda XR 250, which may well be one of the oldest bikes on the start line this year – and knowing Matt, look for him to cross that finish line on Sunday arvo!

Motorcycling SA wish all of our South Australian riders good luck this weekend – ride hard, ride safe, and cross the line on Sunday!
